Chapter 106 Short-range weapons wear down long-range weapons
Xi Yang didn't know if Karma was a good matchup against Rumble, but he knew that since Li Chen dared to pick Rumble even after confirming that he was playing Karma top lane, he must have been confident.
So he wasn't thinking about how to deal with Rambo. Like he always said, getting experience was a success, and if he could get some minions too, that would be perfect.
As soon as both sides were online and the minion waves met, Li Chen immediately started attacking the minions and pushing the lane.
He understands that the most important thing when playing Karma is lane control. Many people think that when facing Karma, the opponent has a long range and they will be targeted, but this idea is wrong.
Once you control the lane, champions like Karma won't have the energy to harass you, otherwise the minion pressure will be overwhelming.
Sunset knew this too, so he didn't dare to auto-attack Rambo at all, and could only keep using auto-attacks to balance the minion wave.
After killing a melee minion and establishing lane control, Li Chen immediately moved to the side of the minion wave.
Rumble's aggressive positioning put considerable pressure on Sunset, forcing him to use his Q to force him to retreat.
Rumble dodged Karma's Q skill with a small movement, then fired two harpoons, combined with the Deathfire Touch rune, instantly reducing Karma's health by a quarter.
Having gained an advantage, Li Chen continued to farm minions. He didn't care if Karma stole A and didn't kill him, since A wouldn't die anyway.
Sunset A quickly farmed minions, but he breathed a sigh of relief. Although he still couldn't win the lane, it was much better than being slaughtered.
Once his E skill was off cooldown, Li Chen moved forward again, looking for an opening in Karma's positioning to unleash a harpoon through minions, continuing to whittle down Karma's health.
Although the harpoon's single-shot damage wasn't high, it couldn't withstand Li Chen's unerring accuracy. When the second wave of minions arrived, Karma was forced to drink the first layer of Corruption Potion.
Rumble, despite his short range, played like a long-range champion, pushing the lane while simultaneously attacking minions. This put increasing pressure on Karma's minion wave, forcing her to constantly use her abilities to contest lane control. Otherwise, if Rumble pushed the wave to the tower, Karma would be severely damaged.
More importantly, the push back after the minions under the tower have cleared the lane could be fatal for him.
Rumble pushed the lane faster, reaching level two first and immediately using his Q to chase Karma. Karma couldn't dodge the fire breath, and even if she didn't move, she would still be slowed by the harpoon and roasted by the fire. By the time she returned to the tower, she had put on the Pain Mask again.
He lost almost half his health in that attack, which is absolutely outrageous.
The director kept focusing the long shot on the top lane, and Guan Zeyuan couldn't help but shake his head as he watched: "It seems that Karma isn't very effective. Against a top lane bully like Rumble, Karma's damage is very weak. She can't get lane priority and she can't out-poke him."
At this point, Rita spoke up for OMG: "But at least Karma can hold the lane. Once she reaches level three and has her W and E skills, it's not realistic for Rumble to kill her. As for being behind in gold and CS, it's not a big problem for Karma."
"That's true. Karma's role in team fights is simply to provide support and RE for her teammates. OMG's lineup is quite suitable for a kiting strategy, and the situation is much better than in the last game," Guan Zeyuan agreed.
[Indeed, what more could you want from a carry? If you don't get solo-killed within ten minutes, being down a level or two is nothing.]
[This Karma sacrificed her late-game impact to control the lane, but couldn't win team fights, and still lost.]
[OMG really learned the essence of Karma. If they go back and build some magic resistance, they'll be able to survive this game.]
However, the audience's comments were clearly premature. To survive the laning phase, the most crucial moment is the level 3 wave.
At this moment, there were two people on the top lane. Karma had already used up her Corruption Potion and was barely back to four-fifths health, almost at full health.
Rambo twice crossed the minion wave to engage, and he only needed to drink one health potion each time, highlighting the difference in skill level.
While rapidly clearing the third wave of minions, Li Chen marked the enemy's blue buff: "Factory, prepare to invade. Locate Kha'Zix. If Kha'Zix isn't there, we'll tower dive."
"Hmm!" The factory manager knocked down the river crab and plunged into the blue team's jungle.
Li Chen didn't rush over. He first pushed the minion wave under the blue team's tower, then stood at the edge of the tower and harassed Karma. His Q skill's 600-yard range, combined with the long-range harpoon, made Karma's life under the tower extremely difficult.
"The mantis is here, can you come over?" The factory manager checked around and finally found the mantis where the toad was.
"I'm here, let's fight him." Li Chen waited for the effect of the Netherfire to wear off, then swaggered from under the tower towards the triangular bush.
"Rumble's going to gank you, we can't win this fight," Sunset immediately warned, while RW used his ultimate to tether Rumble and heal.
Li Chen activated his W ability for speed boost, and just as he was about to leave the tower, he turned around and fired a harpoon to slow Karma down.
Karma didn't dare let Rumble put pressure on her teammates, so she decisively used her E to speed up herself and chased after him, ignoring the minions under the tower. Getting any experience was already a success.
Rumble was pinned to the edge of the turret by the second part of his W. Although he didn't take any damage, he couldn't gank Kha'Zix immediately and could only turn around and use his Q to roast himself by the fire.
The Kha'Zix and Gragas entangled for a while, and after successfully taking down the Gromp, Kha'Zix didn't linger in the fight. He used his E skill to jump over the wall and create distance between himself and Gragas.
"Can't you even get the frog? Is it that hard to use Q skill EW?" Li Chen muttered under his breath.
The factory manager rolled his eyes at Li Chen. Of course he knew this combo: first use Q, then E to stun the Kha'Zix, and finally use WQ with Smite to kill the Gromp.
The problem is that there's a toad between him and the praying mantis, and his single-core brain doesn't really support him quickly finding an angle to stun the mantis in a complex environment.
In the end, neither side got anything, and they went their separate ways.
Li Chen continued to harass Karma in lane. The damage from the harpoon combined with Deathfire Touch was considerable in the early game. With the occasional fire attack, Karma quickly reached a dangerous health threshold. After finishing the fourth wave of minion experience under the tower, Xiyang pressed B on the spot.
Xiyang's original plan was to farm up to 800+ gold in lane and then go back to buy a Tear of the Goddess, but now that's not possible. The laning pressure is too great, so he can only buy a Magic Resistance Cloak to increase his survivability first.
Seeing Karma recall, Li Chen immediately sped up to clear the newly spawned minion wave, then retreated back to the bushes to recall.
Li Chen did a good job last-hitting minions in the early game, missing only one hit throughout the entire match. He was able to return to base and buy a small spellbook and a red crystal, saving a teleportation time to walk back to base.
When the two met again, Li Chen first leveled up his E skill to level 2 and used his familiar tactic of pushing past the minion wave to pressure the enemy.
Xi Yang was not convinced and wanted to fight Li Chen again, but most of the damage was blocked by Rumble's W when he used RQ. On the contrary, Rumble's two E skills not only destroyed his shield, but also consumed a lot of his health.
Sunset didn't dare to go up and stop Rumble from auto-attacking, because his basic attack range was only 525, and his W range was only 500, while Rumble's Q skill, Fire Roast, had a range of 600 yards. If he dared to go up, he would get hit.
This is also what makes Rumble so disgusting. Even years later, in an era dominated by top lane stat monsters, Rumble's mechanics and stats are by no means outdated.
With speed boosts, shields, and slows, plus a long attack range, as long as you time your attacks carefully and kite, no matter what kind of monster you encounter, none of them will have higher stats than the Yordle Blademaster.
