When he got home, Chang Kun took off his coat, draped it over the back of a chair, and sat down on the edge of the bed. His expression was not good.

Cheng Min was folding clothes. Seeing his expression, she put down what she was doing, walked over, and sat down next to him.

"What's wrong? Did something happen at work?"

Chang Kun took out a cigarette, glanced at it, and then put it back.

He recounted what he had overheard in the section chief's office to Cheng Min: someone wanted to use Zhang Qingfeng's position to gain prestige, and the section chief had asked him to come back to work early, which made him increasingly frustrated.

After listening, Cheng Min didn't rush to speak. She reached out and straightened his wrinkled collar before saying, "Our school has also encountered similar situations."

Chang Kun turned to look at her.

"The position of head of teaching became vacant two years ago. There was an old teacher who had worked at this school for more than ten years and whose teaching performance had always been among the best. Everyone thought he should be the one to take the position."

And what happened? They transferred a young man over, supposedly to give him some experience, but he was promoted after a year. The old teacher didn't say a word, just went about his teaching duties as usual, acting like nothing had happened.

Cheng Min paused, her voice softening slightly: "I was indignant on his behalf at the time, asking him why he didn't report it to higher authorities. He said, 'Report what? These kinds of things are inevitable no matter what.'"

Chang Kun didn't say anything, leaning against the headboard and staring at the ceiling.

"Don't take it too hard." Cheng Min placed her hand on the back of his hand and patted it gently.

"The higher-ups won't be too harsh on Section Chief Zhang. He's been in this position for so many years, and even if he hasn't made any great contributions, he's certainly put in a lot of hard work. Even if he's transferred, they'll arrange a decent place for him."

Besides, when it comes to replacing people, the higher-ups have to be careful about the impact. If they go too far, the subordinates will lose heart, and who will be willing to work hard in the future?

Chang Kun sighed, "I just feel so frustrated. You've never met Section Chief Zhang; he's incredibly kind to his subordinates. He even granted us such a long leave to get married."

Cheng Min knew his temper, so she didn't try to persuade him anymore, but just tightened her grip on his hand.

"If you really feel sorry for Section Chief Zhang, then work hard and don't let him worry about you when he leaves."

Listening to Cheng Min speak, Chang Kun suddenly felt much better and reached out to hug her.

Cheng Min leaned on his shoulder: "Go to work tomorrow, do what you're supposed to do, don't wear your emotions on your sleeve. You can't help Section Chief Zhang much, but at least don't cause him trouble."

At dinner time, the family gathered around the table.

Liu Meifen brought over the last bowl of soup, took off her apron, sat down, and casually asked, "Did you go to work this afternoon? Was everything alright?"

Chang Kun picked up a piece of food and said, "I have to go to work tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?" Liu Meifen's eyes widened. "Wasn't the honeymoon supposed to last another week? Why is it being moved up?"

Chang Dashan also put down his chopsticks and looked at his son.

Chang Kun briefly explained what had happened in the section.

After listening, Chang Dashan didn't rush to speak. He picked up his wine glass, took a sip, smacked his lips, and then slowly said, "This section chief is doing this for your own good."

Chang Kun looked up at his father.

"Think about it." Chang Dashan put down his wine glass, his chopsticks pausing on the table. "You took such a long honeymoon leave. When the new boss arrives, won't he have something to say? What if he uses it as an excuse to make trouble? What will you say then?"

Liu Meifen, who was listening nearby, changed her expression slightly: "Really? Marriage leave is a legitimate leave, not a time to slack off."

"A legitimate leave?" Chang Dashan glanced at his wife. "Who would give you such a long leave? Besides, even if it were a legitimate leave, if someone wanted to find fault with you, what reason couldn't they come up with?"

"If you take too long a honeymoon, people will say you have a bad work attitude. No matter how well you did before, if they don't recognize it, what can you do?"

Liu Meifen opened her mouth, as if to say something, but then swallowed it back.

Chang Kun nodded without saying a word.

My dad didn't waste his time at the police station; he understands these intricacies better than anyone else.

Chang Dashan picked up his wine glass, took another sip, and sighed, "These days, it's the same no matter where you work. If your boss is good to you, you have to be grateful and also think about what's best for them. Section Chief Zhang is a kind man for thinking this way."

Liu Meifen muttered from the side, "But you can't make people go back to work early, their honeymoon isn't over yet..."

Chang Dashan glared at her: "What do you know? Keep quiet."

Liu Meifen snorted and didn't say anything more. She took a big bite of the steamed bun and chewed it hard, as if she was venting her anger.

Cheng Min, who had been silent the whole time, picked up some food for Chang Kun and said softly, "Dad's right, don't overthink it. Just focus on work tomorrow."

After finishing his meal, Chang Kun pushed his bowl away and said to Cheng Min, "Let's go back to your parents' house."

Cheng Min paused for a moment, then smiled: "Now?"

"Yeah, I won't have this much freedom after I start working. I'll take advantage of the free time today to visit my parents." Chang Kun stood up and went to push his bicycle.

Xiuer was hunched over the table, picking at the last few grains of rice, when she heard this. She immediately threw down her chopsticks, slid off the stool, ran over, and grabbed Chang Kun's sleeve: "Me too! Me too!"

"Where are you going?" Chang Kun looked down at her.

"I'm going to see Brother Xin!" Xiu'er said confidently, her little face tilted up, her eyes sparkling, as if she wouldn't let go without taking her along.

Cheng Min laughed from the side: "Take her with you, she'll just cause trouble if you leave her at home."

Chang Kun bent down, picked Xiu'er up, and tapped her nose: "Okay, I'll take you. But you have to be good and not run around."

Xiuer nodded vigorously, wrapping her little arms around Chang Kun's neck, afraid that he would change his mind.

The three of them rode a bicycle. Xiu'er sat on the front bar, Cheng Min sat on the back seat, and Chang Kun pedaled the bicycle out of the alley and headed towards Cheng Rongjiang's house.

The autumn wind felt cool on her face. Xiuer sat in front, holding the handlebars with both hands, and started humming a tune she had learned from watching a movie yesterday.

This little girl is tone-deaf and her humming is completely out of tune, but she hums happily, swinging her little legs back and forth.

Cheng Min sat in the back, her hand gently resting on Chang Kun's waist. The wind blew through her hair, and a few strands drifted onto Chang Kun's face, tickling him.

When they arrived at Cheng Rongjiang's house, the gate was ajar.

Cheng Min pushed open the door and went in. Sun Xiulan was squatting in the yard washing clothes. When she heard the noise, she looked up and saw that it was her daughter and son-in-law. She quickly stood up, wiped her hands on her apron, and smiled broadly.

"Why are you here so late? Have you eaten yet?"

"I've eaten, Mom, don't bother anymore."

Cheng Rongjiang came out of the house with a newspaper in his hand. He saw Chang Kun and nodded with a smile.

Cheng Xin also rushed out of the house. When he saw Xiu'er, the two little ones immediately huddled together, chattering away.

He even took out the popcorn he hadn't finished eating and shared it with Xiuer.

Xiuer took a bite and spat it out: "Brother Xin, why isn't it crispy anymore..."
