Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, one could hear a clanging sound from afar, mixed with the laughter of men.

Liu Tiezhu was leading the villagers in digging pits and piling stones, working enthusiastically.

Seven or eight strong laborers were working hard, some carrying stones, some mixing mud, and some building a well platform. They were all covered in sweat, but they all had smiles on their faces and were full of energy.

Ever since they learned that snakehead fish could be caught in the groundwater, the villagers have been so excited they can't sleep.

They couldn't bear to eat the fish themselves; a pound of fresh fish could be exchanged for at least two or three pounds of cornmeal in the city, which was a lifesaver.

"Keep up the good work! If we build the well platform today, we can fish tomorrow!" Liu Tiezhu stood by the pit, wiped the sweat from his face, and shouted at the top of his lungs.

The villagers responded and worked even faster.

The cart was pushed to the foot of the mountain, and there was no road ahead.

Chang Dashan told Zhang Quhun to watch the cart from a distance while he walked over, stepping on the stones with uneven feet.

Liu Tiezhu saw him from afar, put down his pickaxe, and came to greet him: "Dashan, what brings you here?"

Reaching the edge of the pit, Chang Dashan looked down at the large, already dug pit. The groundwater was clear and bright, reflecting the sunlight. Next to it was a half-built well platform, with stones neatly stacked.

"Why bother digging this pit? The village isn't short of water now," Chang Dashan asked.

Liu Tiezhu grinned: "Didn't Xiao Kun tell you when he got back? He helped dig this water."

"This kid is amazing! He said there was water down there, and when he dug with a pickaxe, he actually found water. He also said there were fish down there, so he bent a sewing needle into a hook and caught several blackfish, each weighing two or three pounds!"

Chang Dashan's eyes widened. Xiao Kun hadn't said a word, yet he had silently accomplished such a great feat for the village!

He didn't say anything, but he was secretly delighted.

A father is proud when his son is capable.

He squatted by the pit and peered into the water. His face was reflected in the clear water, swaying gently.

"Xiao Kun asked me to bring you some things." Chang Dashan stood up, took out the bag of fishhooks and fishing line from his pocket, and handed it to Liu Tiezhu.

He then realized that his son had asked him to bring fishing hooks and lines for this purpose.

Liu Tiezhu took it, opened it, and his eyes lit up immediately.

Ten gleaming fishhooks and a sturdy bundle of fishing line are far better than a sewing needle bent into a bend.

"With these, catching fish will be much easier!" Liu Tiezhu shouted to the villagers, his voice rising an octave. "Everyone, get to work! Xiao Kun asked Dashan to bring us fishing hooks and lines! Once we finish the work, we can go fishing!"

The villagers laughed heartily. Compared to working in the fields, which left them exhausted and unable to even get to bed, fishing was much easier and more fun.

Seeing their excitement, Chang Dashan chuckled, "What are fishing hooks and lines? Xiao Kun even asked me to deliver some other things to you."

Liu Tiezhu was taken aback: "What is it?"

Chang Dashan gestured with his chin toward the cart in the distance: "Grain, probably over a thousand catties. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, wheat, rice, ten full sacks, on that cart over there."

As soon as he said that, the surroundings fell silent.

Liu Tiezhu's mouth hung open, unable to close for a long time. Several villagers looked at each other, stunned.

"Brother Dashan, what did you say? Over a thousand catties of grain?" Liu Tiezhu's voice changed.

Chang Dashan nodded: "Xiao Kun is thinking of the villagers and specially brought this over to help everyone in an emergency."

Liu Tiezhu's lips trembled several times, and his eyes immediately reddened.

When Chang Kun mentioned this yesterday, he was grateful, but he didn't really take it seriously.

These days, who can get hundreds of kilograms of grain at once?

Unexpectedly, Xiao Kun really kept his word and came to deliver the grain first thing this morning!

He turned around, wiped his face with his sleeve, and only turned back after a long while, his voice hoarse: "Brother Dashan, this kid Xiao Kun..."

Some of the villagers nearby had their eyes shining, some lowered their heads and remained silent, some muttered, "Xiao Kun is so kind and righteous," and some secretly wiped away tears.

Seeing them like this, Chang Dashan felt both sad and warm inside, and reached out to pat Liu Tiezhu on the shoulder.

"Alright! The grain is right there. Hurry up and find someone to move it back and distribute it. Don't delay."

Liu Tiezhu nodded vigorously and shouted to the villagers, "What are you all standing there for? Go move the grain!"

The villagers responded and rushed towards the cart!

……

While Chang Dashan was busy distributing grain, a different kind of lively scene unfolded in the courtyard houses in the city.

It's the weekend, and Xiao Qing and the others woke up naturally early.

But after searching around, Chang Kun was nowhere to be found.

"Quick! Big brother probably hasn't gotten up yet. Let's wake him up; he promised to take us out to play today!"

Xiao Qing led Xiao Mu and Xiao Shui to Chang Kun's room.

The door was ajar. Pushing it open, one could see Cheng Min lying on her side, fast asleep. Xiu'er was wrapped around Cheng Min like an octopus, her little hands around her neck, her little face buried in her shoulder, drooling in her sleep.

"They're still not up!" Xiaoqing said, hands on her hips, frowning. "What time is it! You two lazybones!"

"Should we... wake them up?"

Xiao Qing's eyes darted around, and she ran into the yard, fished a wet towel out of the basin, and ran back.

Xiao Mu and Xiao Shui followed her example and each took a wet towel.

The three little girls tiptoed to the bedside, exchanged glances, and simultaneously pressed wet towels onto Xiu'er and Cheng Min's faces.

"Ouch!" Cheng Min jolted awake by the cold, her eyes snapping open. Seeing three grinning faces in front of her, she was both annoyed and amused. "What are you all doing?!"

Xiuer was woken up by the cold. She sat up groggily, her hair a mess like a bird's nest. Her eyes were still closed as she mumbled, "What's going on... I want to sleep more..."

Xiao Qing climbed up and grabbed Xiu'er's nose: "What are you sleeping for! Get up and play!"

Xiuer was squeezed so hard she could hardly breathe, and she woke up completely. She stared at Xiaoqing with her round eyes, paused for two seconds, and then pounced on her with a howl. The two sisters rolled around in a ball on the bed.

Xiao Mu and Xiao Shui also climbed up to join in the fun. The four little girls laughed and made a ruckus on the bed, leaving blankets and pillows scattered all over the floor.

Cheng Min quickly moved aside, looking at the little girl on the bed, her head buzzing, and sighed.

"Alright, alright, stop fooling around! Get up and eat, then I'll take you out to play!"

Xiao Qing then released Xiu'er, clapped her hands, and jumped off the bed triumphantly.

The little girls ran outside giggling, then turned back at the door to urge, "Sister Xiaomin, hurry up!"

Chang Kun didn't stay in the courtyard; he went to the alley entrance to wait for his mother.

He was afraid that Xiao Cui hadn't spoken to her parents properly when she went home, and that Liu Meifen would be kicked out of her house again today.

When he saw Liu Meifen walking over happily, he breathed a sigh of relief.

"Mother, how is it?"

Liu Meifen glared at her son: "I didn't realize! Your good buddy Zhang Quhun is quite the ladies' man..."
