"Uncle Tiezhu, the grain is for the village, so don't thank me..."

Chang Kun picked up the bowl and drank water to cover his embarrassment; he hated it when people thanked him politely.

As he drank the sweet farm water, he suddenly remembered something.

My mother-in-law's village in Guangzhou has a pond where they dug up water from the bottom of a muddy bay, and there are fish in the water. I wonder if there are any in my own village.

He glanced out of the village and quietly activated the system sensor.

Sure enough! A look of delight spread across his face.

About two miles south of the village entrance, at the foot of the mountain, there are fish, and they are all quite large, huddled together in one place.

Chang Kun's heart skipped a beat; he was all too familiar with that place.

When I was a child, I often cut grass and collected firewood there. I had never seen a river or a well. If there was water underneath, it was groundwater.

"Uncle, do you have any torn rope at home?"

Liu Tiezhu was taken aback: "Broken rope? Yes, your aunt has saved up quite a lot to make linings."

"Give me a few, they don't have to be the best."

Although Liu Tiezhu was puzzled, he still went into the house and rummaged through it, taking out several old and stiff rags and a few hemp ropes for tying things up.

Chang Kun squeezed through the crowd, pulled a sewing needle from a newspaper on the wall, and stuffed it into his pocket.

"Uncle, grab the pickaxe and come with me."

Liu Tiezhu was even more puzzled: "What are you going out to do? I still have to work in the fields."

Chang Kun didn't elaborate, and walked out with the shovel in his hand: "You'll know when we get there."

Liu Tiezhu opened his mouth, but then went back into the house, carried the pickaxe out, closed the door, and followed behind.

The two left the village one after the other and headed towards the foot of the mountain.

Chang Kun led Liu Tiezhu up a hillside and stopped in front of a depression overgrown with weeds.

"Right here!"

Liu Tiezhu looked around. He had been here countless times. It was barren, without a single decent tree, and the ground beneath it was all gravel and hard soil.

He looked at Chang Kun with a puzzled expression: "What's wrong here?"

Chang Kun didn't answer. He took the pickaxe from his hand and started digging.

One, two, the Three Gorges, all dry and hard.

His hands went numb from the impact of the pickaxe, but he didn't stop.

Liu Tiezhu watched from the side, wanting to ask but not asking, and picked up a shovel to shovel away the broken soil.

After digging for more than half an hour, the soil began to get wet.

Liu Tiezhu paused, looked up and glanced at Chang Kun.

Chang Kun didn't stop and continued digging. With another stroke of the pickaxe, a layer of water seeped out from below. It was murky and mixed with mud, but it was definitely water.

Liu Tiezhu squatted by the pit, watching the murky water slowly rise from the bottom, and suddenly laughed.

He reached out and patted Chang Kun on the shoulder: "Little Kun, when did you notice there was water here?"

"I had a feeling there was water here when I was a child, and I just remembered it."

"Why didn't you say so earlier?"

Chang Kun laughed: "You wouldn't have believed me even if I'd told you earlier, Uncle!"

"That's true." Liu Tiezhu nodded, then stared at the puddle for a while. "This place isn't far from the village. We can dig the puddle bigger and build a well platform. When there's a drought, the villagers won't have to go to such lengths to fetch water."

As he spoke, the wrinkles on his face smoothed out a bit.

Chang Kun didn't reply; he didn't dig this place to get water.

He picked up the pickaxe and continued digging, widening the pit opening as he dug deeper and deeper.

The stones being dug out were getting bigger and bigger, and the soil was getting wetter and wetter.

Liu Tiezhu also helped clear the soil out, and the two took turns working up a sweat.

After digging for another half hour, the pickaxe hit a large rock, which made Chang Kun's hands go numb.

He changed his angle and started digging down from the edge of the rock. After a few digs, the rock loosened.

They reached out to move it, but the stone wouldn't budge. Liu Tiezhu jumped down too, and the two of them worked together to pry the stone up and flip it over to one side.

Under the rock, there was a dark hole, and water was gushing up from the hole, faster than before, and the water was clearer.

Chang Kun lay down at the cave entrance and looked down. It was pitch black and he couldn't see anything, but he sensed that the fish were down there, gathered near the cave entrance, as if they had been startled by the light, and were swimming back and forth.

He put down the pickaxe, squatted by the cave entrance, took out the sewing needle from his pocket, bent it into a hook with a stone, and tied it to a strip of rag.

Liu Tiezhu, watching from the side, was completely bewildered: "Xiao Kun, what are you doing?"

Chang Kun didn't look up. He dug around in the damp mud by the pit, found a small earthworm, threaded it onto the hook, and threw the hook into the hole.

The rag strips, soaked in water, slowly sank to the bottom.

Liu Tiezhu was taken aback for a moment, then burst out laughing: "You're fishing? Where would you find fish down there?"

He shook his head, thinking Chang Kun was being delusional, and continued to persuade him, "If there are fish underground, how many years would they have to live? They've never even seen the light of day, how could they possibly survive?"

Chang Kun tied the other end of the cloth strip to the pickaxe head, then stuck the pickaxe head into the soil at the edge of the pit to secure it, before looking up at Liu Tiezhu.

"Uncle, have you forgotten? When have I ever come back empty-handed while hunting in the mountains?"

Liu Tiezhu opened his mouth, but no words came out.

He recalled that when Chang Kun was a child, the villagers all said that this kid was unreliable and good at nothing.

But ever since he was fired from his apprenticeship in the city in the summer, he's been like a different person. He goes hunting in the mountains and never comes back empty-handed. He can bring back anything, including wild boar, sheep, wolves, and even black bears.

Later, they moved the whole family to the city, where everyone got a job, a house, and even a wife.

This child is truly unfathomable these days.

He squatted down, stared at the hole, and said nothing more.

After waiting for a long time, the cloth stripes didn't budge. Liu Tiezhu's legs were numb from squatting, so he changed his posture and glanced at the sun again.

"Xiao Kun, there probably aren't any fish down there. Let's go back. Look at us, covered in mud. If your aunt sees us when we get back, she'll start nagging again."

Chang Kun didn't respond, but reached out and moved the cloth strip, shifting the fishhook towards the location of the fish school detected by the sensor.

Liu Tiezhu stood up, stretched his legs, and said, "I have to go check on the fields. I've been out for so long, the villagers will start gossiping. As the team leader, it won't sound good if word gets out that I'm leading the way in slacking off..."

Before he could finish speaking, the cloth strip suddenly tightened.

Liu Tiezhu's eyes widened suddenly, and he shouted as he reached out to pull off the strip of cloth.

The strip of cloth slipped in his hand, and he quickly grabbed it and pulled it upwards with all his might.

The water suddenly sank, and the fish broke free...

The strip of cloth bounced up lightly, leaving the fishhook completely clean, not even a worm was left.

"Ouch!" Liu Tiezhu slapped his thigh hard, extremely annoyed. "Damn it! The fish got away! That force, the fish must have been huge!"

He crouched down, peered into the cave entrance, and kept muttering, "Sigh, I should have just let you do it! You're a great hunter, you must be good at fishing too!"

That fish was so big! Even if you didn't add oil, just boiling it in water would have been enough to feed a family for several days. And he just let it escape like that!

That's meat!

I really want to slap myself a few times!
