Cheng Min held her mother's hand, her voice softening.

"Mother, come into the city with us first, and come back to pack in a couple of days."

Having just reunited with her mother, she really didn't want to be separated from her for even a moment.

Sun Xiulan hesitated for a moment: "Then... how about staying for a day or two, and then coming back?"

It wasn't that she didn't want to reunite with her family, but she just couldn't bear to leave the place where she had lived for so many years.

Cheng Xin stood beside her, his eyes bright, looking at her expectantly.

Seeing her youngest son like this, what could a mother say?

"Okay, I'll do as you say."

Half an hour later, the group stood at the village entrance.

Sun Xiulan was carrying a small bundle in her hand, inside which was a change of clothes and a few sweet potatoes.

"Mom, get in the car."

Sun Xiulan and Cheng Xin had never ridden a bicycle before, and it took them a while to get used to it.

Two bicycles traveled west along the mountain road, the sun shining obliquely, casting long shadows.

Cheng Min rode ahead, the wind blowing her hair, and she suddenly started singing.

"The sun rises and shines in all directions, Chairman Mao..."

The sound was crisp and clear, drifting along the mountain road.

Sun Xiulan sat in the back, and seeing her daughter's happy expression, her eyes welled up with tears again.

Look up at the sky; it's blue and the sun is warm.

For the first time in over a decade, I felt that this day, this sun, was truly wonderful.

Cheng Xin sat in the back seat behind Chang Kun, listening to his sister's singing, a slight smile playing on his lips.

He looked down at his hands, then at the road ahead.

This road leads to the city.

He had never been to the city before, not even once in his life.

Today, he is going into the city.

Cheng Min sang one song, then another.

"The waters of Honghu Lake, ripple and surge..."

The sound drifted further and further away, into the mountains, and into the wind.

Chang Kun had never seen his daughter-in-law so excited, so he started humming along.

When she arrived, she stumbled and climbed up the mountain, looking extremely anxious.

On the way back, she drove her elderly mother, singing a song as she went, full of energy.

They came as a pair, but returned as a family of four.

By the time I arrived at the guesthouse, it was almost five o'clock.

As the sun began to set, Cheng Min helped Sun Xiulan off the back of the bicycle. Her legs were so weak that she held onto her daughter's hand and it took her a while to regain her balance.

Cheng Xin stood to the side, unsure of what to do with his hands, his eyes darting around, finding everything new and interesting.

This courtyard is even larger than the brigade's courtyard. The ground is paved with blue bricks, the walls are painted snow-white, and the windows are fitted with glass.

He had never seen such a clean place.

After returning the bicycle, Old Chen happily accepted the ten yuan and pretended not to see Chang Kun leading the stranger in.

Chang Kun called out, "Mother, come inside and rest."

Sun Xiulan followed them inside, but when she reached the entrance of the guesthouse, she suddenly stopped.

The door was wide open, leading to a corridor with a gleaming wooden floor.

The corridor is lined with wooden doors, all painted green and kept spotless.

Standing at the door, Sun Xiulan dared not step inside.

Cheng Xin also stopped, hiding behind his mother, peeking inside, then shrinking back.

"This...this place, can I go in?"

Chang Kun didn't say anything, but Cheng Min had already walked over, taking her mother's hand with one hand and her younger brother's hand with the other.

"Why can't we come in? This is where we're staying!"

Sun Xiulan still didn't dare to take a step. She looked back at the cloth shoes on her feet. The shoes were covered in mud, the soles were worn thin, and the seams were coming undone.

She looked again at the gleaming wooden floor and shook her head.

"I'll wait outside, you guys go inside and rest."

Cheng Min panicked and grabbed her hand, pulling her inside.

Sun Xiulan was pulled along by her daughter, walking very carefully, afraid that the mud on her feet would get on the ground.

Cheng Xin followed behind, head down, taking small steps.

Chang Kun sighed inwardly, thinking that it would probably take them a while to adjust after they returned to the capital.

Once inside the room, Sun Xiulan stood at the door, at a loss for what to do.

There were two beds in the room, covered with snow-white sheets and neatly folded quilts.

The floor was paved with cement and swept clean. Floral curtains hung in the windows, and the light coming in was soft.

Cheng Xin followed behind his mother, unsure of where to look.

This room is bigger than his entire house, and it's also bright.

"Mom, sit down! Why are you standing?"

Sun Xiulan looked at her patched clothes and shook her head: "This bed is too clean... I'm dirty..."

Cheng Min felt a lump in her throat, grabbed her mother's hand, and pressed her down onto the bed.

"What's dirty about you! You're my mother, who dares to say you're dirty!"

Sun Xiulan sat on the edge of the bed, her body stiff, not daring to move.

Cheng Min then beckoned to Cheng Xin, "Brother, come and sit down."

Cheng Xin walked over and sat down next to his mother, placing his hands on his knees, behaving as obediently as a primary school student.

Cheng Min looked at them, her eyes reddening, then she smiled.

She turned around, picked up the thermos, poured in half a basin of hot water, added some cold water, tested the water temperature, and brought it to her mother.

"Mom, let's soak our feet."

Sun Xiulan was stunned, looking at her daughter: "How can this be?"

Cheng Min squatted down and, without saying a word, took off her mother's shoes.

As soon as she took off her shoes, tears almost welled up in her eyes again.

My mother's feet were covered in calluses, her heels were cracked, and her toes were deformed and squeezed together.

These are feet worn down from decades of walking on mountain roads.

Sun Xiulan was a little embarrassed and tried to pull her foot back.

Cheng Min refused, pressing her feet into the basin and gently rubbing them.

"Mom, I'll buy you a pair of soft shoes from now on, and you won't wear these cloth shoes anymore."

Sun Xiulan looked at her daughter, at the way she was squatting there, and tears fell, landing in the basin and splashing up tiny water droplets.

Seeing this, Cheng Xin's eyes also turned red.

Cheng Min poured him a basin of water and told him to wash himself, then turned around and rummaged through his luggage for clothes.

One of the clothes is mine; it's loose and big, and it would fit my mother perfectly.

There's another one that belongs to Chang Kun; it's a bit long, so Cheng Xin can wear it. Just roll up the sleeves and pant legs.

There were also two pairs of soft-soled cloth shoes, which were originally spares, so I put them on for them.

"Change them all, I'll take you to buy new ones tomorrow."

Sun Xiulan dared not touch the fabric of her clothes, for fear that her rough hands would snag it.

"Xiaomin, Mom's clothes are still wearable..."

Cheng Min didn't let her finish speaking, and without saying a word, stuffed the clothes into her mother's arms.

"Put these on, let's go out to eat, I'm starving!"

She could tell that her mother had been living in extreme hardship for the past ten years or so, and now she was doing everything with extreme caution.

This is a problem, it needs to be corrected!

Now that my children are capable, how could they possibly let their old mother suffer?

After awkwardly changing their clothes and shoes, Sun Xiulan and Cheng Xin stood there, looking like completely different people.

Although she is still thin and dark-skinned, she is clean and tidy, and looks much more energetic!

Cheng Min looked him up and down, her face beaming with joy.

"That's more like it! If I went back to see Dad and my older brother wearing my old clothes, they'd kill me!"

She took her mother's and younger brother's arms and waved proudly.

"Let's go, wonton noodles!"
