Xiuer also caught a string of grasshoppers, held them in her hand, and smiled so hard her eyes narrowed into slits.

Even if we don't catch as many as the older sisters, it's still much better than having caught nothing at all.

The group arrived at the small river in the east of the village. The little girls cheered and jumped into the water to wash their hands and faces.

It was quite hot, and they were exhausted after catching grasshoppers for over an hour.

After resting for a while, Chang Kun tossed a box of matches: "Xiao Qing, take your sister to find some dry grass and twigs, and light a fire to roast grasshoppers to eat."

"Mmm!" The little girls' eyes sparkled. Even though there was plenty of food at home, they were really looking forward to the grasshoppers they had caught themselves.

Chang Kun was lying on the grass by the river, a blade of grass in his mouth, when suddenly a thought struck him: there was a small grass turtle at his feet.

Chang Kun had originally planned to take the little girls grasshopper hunting today, but since this grass turtle dared to climb onto his foot, he couldn't let it go.

He kicked the grass turtle, put it into his spatial storage, and glanced at the little grass turtle, which weighed just over half a pound. It was so skinny that it could only be kept as a pet by the fish pond.

The four younger sisters were roasting grasshoppers, so Chang Kun didn't have to lift a finger. After a few minutes, the aroma of roasted protein wafted out.

"It smells so good! I love grasshoppers!"

"The food from Biandangou is the best!"

"Grasshoppers are the best to eat, because they have the most eggs inside."

The girls waited for the grasshoppers to cook, discussing which one tasted best.

"The grasshoppers only lay their eggs in the fall. I'll bring you guys to catch them then."

"That's great, thank you so much, brother..."

"Big brother, the grasshoppers are cooked, come and eat!"

Chang Qing brushed aside the ashes, flicked away some grasshoppers, and handed them to Chang Kun: "Brother, they smell delicious!"

"Delicious!" Chang Kun ate a few bites of grasshoppers. He hadn't tasted this flavor in a long time, in both his past and present lives.

The other girls also ate heartily, and after eating two, their mouths turned black with freckles.

"Xiao Shui, are you happy at your big brother's house? Do you want to go home?" Chang Kun teased Xiao Shui as she ate grasshopper after grasshopper.

"I'm so happy! I don't want to go home. If I go back, I'll only be eating vegetable porridge." Kids just say whatever comes to mind. They like to stay wherever there's good food and fun.

After eating for a while, Chang Qing remembered something and turned to Chang Kun, asking, "Big brother, should we leave some for Father, Mother, and eldest sister?"

"Go ahead and eat. If you can finish it, that's impressive. I have plenty more." Chang Kun glanced at the riverbank. "You guys, do you want to eat frogs?"

I sensed that there were many frogs hiding in the water plants along the riverbank.

"Frog? Where? Where is it?!" Chang Qing stood up abruptly.

She remembered one time when she was a child, after it rained, her mother caught a frog in the yard, peeled off its skin, and stir-fried it in a pan. The aroma of the meat made her dizzy with delight.

The other girls also stared wide-eyed at Chang Kun, especially Xiu'er, who didn't know what a frog was, but that didn't stop her from drooling.

"Wait here, your big brother will catch some frogs for you to eat." Chang Kun walked to the grass by the river, gently picked up a frog, weighed it in his hand, and found it weighed at least half a pound.

They weren't greedy; they caught five in total and then stopped, one for each person.

"Big brother, is this delicious?" Chang Mu and Xiao Shui had never eaten frogs before, and seeing the frogs' colorful appearance, they couldn't believe that this thing could taste good.

"You'll only know once you try it. If you don't want to eat it, I can do it for you."

"Eat, I want to eat!" Chang Mu quickly declared. Her older brother always brought delicious food, even the ugly osmanthus cicada from last time tasted great.

He took out a wolf-tooth dagger, gutted the five frogs, strung them on a small branch, and lit a small fire again.

The frogs were roasting on the fire, juices dripping down. When the girls weren't looking, Chang Kun squeezed some oil from the meat in his spatial storage and dripped it onto the frog meat.

"It smells so good!"

The frog meat became increasingly charred as it roasted, releasing a fragrant aroma that drew several girls to the fire, who sniffed the air.

"It's ready to eat." Chang Kun tore off a piece of frog leg meat, took a couple of bites, and a savory aroma mixed with a fresh fragrance filled his mouth. It was delicious!

Without waiting for her older brother to feed her, Xiuer took the frog skewers, blew on them, and gnawed at them, making "mmm" sounds like a pig.

The other women ate heartily; it was their first time eating roasted frog, and they hadn't expected it to taste so good.

After they finished eating, they surrounded Xiao Xiuer, saying, "Xiuer can't finish, let your older sister help you."

"That frog leg isn't tasty, I'll eat it for Xiuer."

Xiuer screamed in terror, "Big brother, they're bullying me!"

"Sister is just teasing you." Chang Kun chuckled, letting Xiu'er sit on his lap and sway back and forth, making her blush and reveal her dimples.

After eating, on the way home, Xiu'er was too tired from catching grasshoppers and couldn't walk anymore. She lay on Chang Kun's back with her little head drooping down.

The other girls looked on with envy; the youngest of them was seven or eight years old, past the age where they could freely act spoiled.

As soon as they entered the courtyard, Chang Qing rushed into the house like a whirlwind: "Big sister! Big sister, we caught so many grasshoppers and katydids!"

Chang Mei carried Xiao Bao into the main room and immediately noticed the dozen or so grasshoppers in Chang Qing's hand: "Oh dear, you've stirred up a grasshopper swarm!"

Chang Kun followed her in and put Xiu'er on the east kang (heated brick bed). She closed her eyes and mumbled, "Big pot, so delicious..."

"Xiao Mu and Xiao Shui, go and remove the wings from the grasshoppers, crickets, and Biandan Gou grasshoppers. Xiao Qing, start the fire," Chang Kun instructed, preparing to put the remaining grasshoppers into the oil.

Seeing her younger brother putting oil into the pot again, Changmei quickly turned around and walked to the side.

Every time she saw her younger brother using so much oil, her heart ached. In the past, the family used more oil in several months than her brother used in one go.

But once the grasshoppers were taken out of the oil, the aroma wafted into her nose, and she immediately changed her mind—more oil really does make it smell better!

The girls were already half full, and when they smelled the aroma, they couldn't resist anymore.

The family sat around the eight-immortal table, munching on one dish after another, their mouths greasy with oil.

Chang Qing was still lamenting, "It's a pity there are so few with seeds, otherwise they would taste even better!"

The other girls nodded in agreement.

"Even this fragrance can't shut you up." Chang Mei laughed and patted Xiao Qing on the head.

"Big sister, big brother just roasted frogs for us on the mountain, they were so delicious!" The little girls recounted the fun they had catching grasshoppers and eating frogs on the mountain.

Turning to her younger brother, Chang Mei blinked, "Xiao Kun, you caught frogs again? Why didn't you bring them back?"

"Uh... I only caught five, and we ate them all." Chang Kun felt a little guilty for forgetting to bring frogs for his older sister.

He remembered how, when he was a child, he craved meat, and his older sister would take him to the pond at night to listen to the frogs croaking and catch them by the dim moonlight.

Back then, he was just a little kid who would clap his hands from a distance to cheer on his older sister, and he caught more than a dozen frogs in the middle of the night.

When he got home, he was delighted and ate his fill of frog meat.

The older sister got a severe beating on the buttocks. There were mud balls by the pond, and several villagers had already been bitten. For two little kids to go there in the middle of the night was incredibly audacious. They definitely deserved a beating to teach them a lesson.

Thinking of this, Chang Kun couldn't sit still any longer. He stood up and said, "Big sister, I'll go catch some more frogs to eat."
