Chapter 202 Laughing with Everyone
The animation continues playing.
The scene cuts from the office where the company signed the consent form.
The camera pans along the corridor, past the empty tea room, past workstations piled high with documents, and finally stops at the dormitory entrance.
Si pushed open the door, took Ella's hand, and walked inside.
The room was dark.
Just as Si was about to touch the switch, the light above his head suddenly turned on.
Welcome back!
Colorful ribbons burst open from the ceiling, smearing Si's face with colorful confetti.
Minister Wu stood in the center of the living room, holding an inflated trumpet in his hand, blowing it until his face turned red.
Behind him were all the members of the Terminal Service Department.
The sofa was pushed to the corner, and the coffee table was covered with takeout boxes and beverage cans.
In the corner stood a karaoke machine that had been moved from somewhere, with the intro to an old song playing on the screen.
A handwritten banner hung on the wall.
The handwriting is crooked and messy, clearly full of ink.
"Ella, thank you for coming."
Si stood frozen at the door, not moving for a long time.
Ella's fingers tightened slightly in his palm.
Wu Tang put down the loudspeaker, walked over with a smile, and patted Si on the shoulder.
"We agreed there wouldn't be a farewell party, right? This isn't a farewell party, it's a family dinner. It's not unreasonable for our family to have a meal together, is it?"
Si opened his mouth, but said nothing.
Ella laughed first.
She released Si's hand, bowed ninety degrees to everyone, her head almost touching her knees.
"Sorry to bother you."
Man was the first to rush up and shove a steaming cup of black tea into Ella's hand.
The teacup has a cartoon cat printed on it, and it's full of its own contents.
"This is what I made, you can try it."
Man's voice was half a tone higher than usual, and he was laughing so hard his mouth almost reached his ears, but his hands were shaking so much that he spilled several drops of tea.
Ella took the cup with both hands, lowered her head, and took a sip.
"It tastes good."
He nodded vigorously, and as he turned around, he blinked frantically a few times.
Constance leaned over and touched Ella's teacup with a bottle of juice.
Let me tell you a joke.
He cleared his throat, his expression as serious as if he were giving a work report.
"Do you know what the biggest difference is between Giftias and humans?"
"What?"
"Giftia doesn't get hangovers."
He chuckled first.
He stopped laughing halfway through, his Adam's apple bobbed, and his eyes suddenly reddened.
"So you can drink whatever you want tonight, but not tomorrow..."
He didn't finish his sentence.
The moment the word "tomorrow" was uttered, the air in the entire room seemed to freeze for a moment.
Constance's knuckles turned white as he gripped the juice bottle, and he swallowed the rest of his sentence, carrying the bottle to a corner.
The comments section erupted in a collective breakdown during this awkward silence.
He almost said tomorrow. But there is no tomorrow.
I couldn't stand it anymore. Everyone was laughing, but everyone was about to break down.
This forced smile is a million times more painful than crying outright.
The karaoke machine was turned on.
Shirley grabbed the microphone and, together with two colleagues, sang a fast-paced pop song, going completely off-key.
Man clapped and tapped his hands on the side, but his clapping was completely off-key.
Minister Wu sat on the armrest of the sofa, holding a can of beer, his eyes crinkling with laughter.
Ella was pulled into the middle of the crowd, standing there helplessly, her face showing a blank expression as if she didn't know what to do.
Si leaned against the wall, watching all this with a slight smile on his lips, but his eyes remained expressionless.
Halfway through the party, Xiangyue disappeared.
Si found her on the balcony.
The moonlight was faint, casting a light on the iron railings, like a thin layer of frost.
Xiangyue stood with her back to the living room light, clutching a half-empty can of beer in her hand.
He didn't turn around even when he heard footsteps.
"Why come out? Isn't it fun inside?"
Si walked over to her, and the two leaned against the railing side by side.
Xiangyue took a swig of beer.
Three years ago.
She spoke, her voice very low.
"Headquarters issued a notice saying that an old model Giftia was to be scrapped and asked which department was willing to recycle the parts."
She watched as the water droplets on the beer can slid down.
"I saw her in the corner when I went to the warehouse to get the paperwork."
"She huddled behind a cardboard box, hugging her knees, and didn't move at all."
"His clothes were so dirty you couldn't tell their original color, and his eyes were fixed on the ground, like a kitten that had been abandoned."
Si did not speak.
"I asked her her name, but she didn't answer. I asked her her model number, but she still didn't answer."
Xiangyue's lips twitched slightly.
"Later I got annoyed, so I pulled her up from the ground, brushed the dust off her, and said, 'Come with me. From today onwards, you're in our department.'"
"She just followed me out of the warehouse, stunned. When we got outside, the sun was shining brightly. She squinted, looked up, and stood there motionless."
I turned around and looked at her, and found her crying.
"Without uttering a sound, tears just fell one by one."
Xiangyue squeezed the beer can so hard that it snapped and deformed.
"I later learned that it was the first time someone had called her name after she was formatted."
The balcony door wasn't closed tightly, and a sliver of warm light shone through the crack.
Man squatted behind the door, covering his mouth tightly with both hands, tears streaming down his face through his fingers, his shoulders trembling.
Xiangyue seemed to sense something, and glanced at the crack in the door, but didn't say anything.
She turned her gaze back to Si's profile and gave him a hard slap on the back of the head.
"Kid, don't let her walk this last stretch alone."
Si stumbled forward half a step after being hit, grabbed the railing to steady himself, and looked back at Xiangyue.
Under the moonlight, Xiangyue's eyes were red.
But her expression remained fierce, with the corners of her mouth turned down, as if she owed her eight million.
Si smiled.
No, it won't.
The comments were so numerous they were unreadable, just a bunch of crying faces and ellipses.
[If Senior Xiangyue breaks down, so do I.]
Seeing that scene from the warehouse three years ago felt like my heart was being gripped tightly.
[This department isn't just about colleagues; it's like family. It's like a family seeing off a loved one.]
The end of the party.
I don't know who started it, but everyone stood in a circle.
Minister Wu raised the beer can.
Let's sing a song.
Nobody asked what they were singing.
Constance cleared his throat and began.
The melody is as simple as it gets, and the lyrics are as simple as they get; it's just a very, very old nursery rhyme.
One person sings off-key, two people sing off-key, and a dozen people sing together, and they sing off-key with a straight face.
Ella stood in the middle of the crowd, her lips moved a few times, but no sound came out.
Her eyes were red.
But she was smiling.
I laughed more hard than I had in the past six months.
The room fell silent for two seconds as the song ended.
Minister Wu tilted his head back and gulped down the last mouthful of beer, then let out a heavy sigh.
"Alright, everyone go home. Tomorrow..."
He paused for a moment.
"Tomorrow will be a nice day."
One by one, my colleagues left the room.
Everyone who passes by Ella stops for a moment.
Some people patted her on the shoulder, some ruffled her hair, and some did nothing but glance at her before quickly lowering their heads and walking away.
They were all the last to leave.
She stood at the door for a long time, then suddenly rushed back and hugged Ella tightly.
They hugged for a full ten seconds.
He didn't say a word.
When she let go, her eyes were red and swollen. She turned and ran out, the sound of her heels hitting the corridor floor fading into the distance.
The door closed.
Only Si and Ella remained in the room.
Ella walked to the table and took the little pink notebook out of her pocket.
Turn to one of the pages.
"To laugh together with everyone."
She picked up her pen and gently drew a checkmark in the box behind her.
The pen tip lingered on the paper for a long time, so long that a deep ink dot appeared at the end of the hook.
The camera slowly zoomed out, and the countdown numbers in the upper right corner of the screen jumped once.
