Chapter 318 Insulting soldiers? That's utter nonsense!
Lu Weihua was tidying up her wardrobe. Ye Wenxi had brought her several spring outfits this time, and she was putting them in.
The dormitory door was pushed open.
"Weihua, there are two women downstairs looking for you. They say one of them is your second sister-in-law." My roommate poked half his head in.
"Is my second sister-in-law downstairs?" Lu Weihua turned around.
"Yes, that's what she said."
"Oh, right," my roommate whispered, "I also saw Du Yi downstairs. Be careful when you go down, don't run into him. That girl saw him too."
"what?"
The clothes Lu Weihua was holding fell onto the bed. She quickly ran outside, rushing down the stairs and to the door.
Lu Weihua ran all the way to the dormitory building entrance, but no one was there; none of the people were there.
She stood still, spun around, ran a few steps to the left, and then turned back.
Running around to find someone was too slow. I spotted a bicycle parked by the bike shed. I didn't know whose it was, so I pushed it out, hopped on, and started riding.
The pedals were pedaling very fast, and the car started spinning around the campus.
In fact, the news had already begun circulating among the students when the school started its investigation. Several girls who were close to Lu Weihua had heard some of the rumors.
"I heard that Du Yi seems to have some issues with his conduct. Maybe he's not after you. You shouldn't associate with him anymore."
At first, Lu Weihua didn't believe it. Du Yi had always been polite to her and spoke gently, not like a bad person.
But more and more people started talking about it. One, two, three, even her counselor had subtly inquired about it with her.
She began to waver.
This really upset her for a long time, not for any other reason than that she felt like a fool for being fooled for so long without even realizing it.
In a corner of a dormitory building, Du Yi was still confronting Ye Wenxi.
"I don't understand what you're saying. I like Lu Weihua, that's why I approached her. Do your family members interfere with their daughter's friendships?" Du Yi retorted, his eyes avoiding Ye Wenxi's gaze.
"Don't play dumb with me." Ye Wenxi took a step forward. "Let me tell you, we're the ones who took those thugs to the police station. I know everything about how you borrow money and how you chase girls."
"If you're going to waste your energy on this, you should focus on your studies and other important matters. You're really bringing shame to your school," Ye Wenxi said harshly.
"Who do you think you are, lecturing me like this?" Du Yi's face flushed red. "Aren't you the same? You married into their family because they're a commander and your husband is an officer. You think you can..."
boom--!
The second half of his sentence was shoved back into his mouth by Ding Jiahe's punch.
Du Yi stumbled back two steps, tripped, and fell hard on his backside. He covered his face, blood trickling from between his fingers and dripping onto his collar.
"You.......!" He tried to get up in a fit of rage, but his legs gave way and he sat back down.
Ding Jiahe shook her hand and looked down at him: "If you keep talking nonsense, I'll give you another punch."
Ye Wenxi quickly grabbed Ding Jiahe's hand: "Why...why are you using your right arm? Does it hurt?"
"It's alright, why don't you give him another kick?" Ding Jiahe said with a smile to Ye Wenxi.
Meanwhile, Du Yi, still recovering from the force of that punch, covered his face and stared at Ding Jiahe in shock. This seemingly thin and petite girl had been punched like a hammer blow; her entire face was numb.
Shame and anger surged up at the same time. Du Yi leaned against the wall, stood up, and took half a step forward.
"Ah!—! Get out of the way!" A shout came from the slope.
Several people immediately turned to look.
At the very top of the slope, Lu Weihua stood up and pedaled, his legs swinging rapidly. With the acceleration from the downhill slope, the bicycle flew towards them like a cannonball.
"Get out of the way! The brakes are broken, I can't stop!" Lu Weihua shouted, but his footwork on the pedals didn't slow down at all.
"Wei Hua?"
"My God!"
The three people simultaneously pressed themselves against the base of the wall.
But Du Yi realized that Lu Weihua had come specifically for him.
"Lu Weihua!? Stop right there!" Du Yi took off running.
"Hey, you down there, move aside! Don't block my way, I can't stop!" Lu Weihua shouted anxiously.
Bang--!!
Two people and a car overturned on the ground at the same time.
Du Yi clutched his back, lying there unable to move. The bicycle wheels were still spinning, creaking and groaning.
Ye Wenxi and Ding Jiahe quickly helped Lu Weihua up.
"Are you alright? Did you hurt yourself?" The two people checked Lu Weihua's body from head to toe.
Lu Weihua rubbed his sore arm and patted the dirt off his pants: "I'm fine."
She turned around, looked down at Du Yi on the ground, and bent down.
"Hey, isn't this Du Yi? What are you doing here? What do you want with my second sister-in-law?"
Lu Weihua leaned closer to his face, tilting his head.
"Hey, why are you glaring at me like that, Du Yi? What's wrong? You seem pretty angry."
Du Yi lay on the ground, unable to move due to back pain, his face smeared with blood from his nose. He glared at Lu Weihua, his lips trembling as if he wanted to say something, but then he gasped in pain again.
He struggled for a long time to sit up, leaned against the wall, and stared at the group of people with bloodshot eyes.
Ye Wenxi, Ding Jiahe, and Lu Weihua all stared at him coldly.
"Let's go, don't waste your breath arguing with him. I'm afraid kicking him would just dirty my feet," Ye Wenxi said coldly. "Du Yi, stay far away from my sister from now on."
"Let's go." Ding Jiahe took Lu Weihua's arm and prepared to leave.
"Do you think you're so great just because you're military dependents?" Du Yi's voice was forced out of his throat, each word laced with ruthlessness. "Do you think you're so superior just because you're powerful and wealthy?"
"Actually, you're all social trash!!"
"Don't you know the privileges that children of military personnel enjoy at military academies? Postgraduate admission quotas, competition qualifications, cadre selection—aren't all of these prioritized for you? We risked our lives to get in, and in the end, you've taken all the opportunities!!"
He took a breath, and blood started flowing from his nose again, but he didn't wipe it away.
"I hate you people the most. Strip off those uniforms, without those privileges, you're nothing!"
Du Yi wanted to continue protesting against these "privileges of the powerful and privileged," the darkness of the equator, and his inner indignation at "injustice."
But then they saw Ding Jiahe begin to unbutton her coat.
She quickly took off her coat and threw it on the ground, then started unbuttoning her shirt.
Ye Wenxi, Lu Weihua, and Du Yi stared in disbelief at her actions.
"Jiahe, what are you doing?" Lu Weihua asked in shock.
Ye Wenxi frowned but did not stop her, seemingly having already understood Ding Jiahe's intention.
Ding Jiahe took off her shirt, leaving her in only a white tank top. Everyone's eyes, including Du Yi's, were drawn to the scar on her right arm.
The scar, about the size of her palm, was bright red like a blooming flower, covering her right arm. The skin around the scar was wrinkled and stretched, like a cracked riverbed.
"This is the wound I sustained more than a month ago during the Sino-Vietnamese War in Yunnan."
Ding Jiahe's voice was very flat.
"I'm a military doctor. But I can never be a military doctor again!!"
Du Yi was stunned by the shocking scar and couldn't speak for a moment. He knew about that war; it was reported in the newspapers every day. But what he couldn't believe was that this little girl had actually returned from that battlefield.
"Was it terrible? Was it serious? No, I was the luckiest. Out of more than a dozen comrades in our team, I was the only one who came back alive." Ding Jiahe draped her shirt over her shoulders, her eyes reddening, but she held back her tears.
"You think it's unfair? My comrade-in-arms, who was twenty years old at the time, is buried in southern Xinjiang, forever twenty. Is that fair?"
She walked up to Du Yi and squatted down. There was no hatred or pity in her eyes; she just looked at him.
You're saying soldiers have special privileges?
"Yes... I got a 50% discount at the guesthouse today."
"But shouldn't we have special privileges?"
Du Yi leaned against the wall, his eyes fixed on the scar, his lips trembling.
Ding Jiahe stood up, picked up the shirt from the ground, shook off the dust, and slowly put it on.
"Insulting soldiers? That's utter nonsense!"
