Chapter 68 Becoming a Father Unexpectedly?
As Chen Yongqiang strolled through the market, his gaze swept over the stalls, when he suddenly spotted two familiar figures in the crowd.
It was the two Zhang brothers, with half a wild boar meat in front of them, enthusiastically hawking their wares.
"These two brothers are quite lucky; they often manage to hunt wild boars," Chen Yongqiang muttered to himself, without a trace of jealousy.
The Qinglong Mountains stretch for hundreds of miles, and there are plenty of prey there; he couldn't hunt them all by himself.
As he was about to continue his stroll, the older of the men selling wild boar meat looked up, spotted him, and immediately stood up to greet him: "Are you Chen Yongqiang from Shimen Village?"
The man was in his early thirties, with dark skin and a sturdy build: "I am Zhang Jianjun, and this is my brother Zhang Jianguo. We live in Zhangjiagou, just across a mountain ridge from your village."
Chen Yongqiang stopped and nodded slightly: "I recognize you. You two brothers are excellent hunters."
Zhang Jianjun looked around and lowered his voice, "To be honest, my brother and I saw a big guy on the north slope of Qinglong Mountain. We were wondering if Brother Yongqiang would like to join us for a hunt?"
"What big thing?" Chen Yongqiang asked, his expression unchanged.
"It's a wild boar king, weighing at least five or six hundred pounds." Zhang Jianjun gestured to indicate its size. "Its tusks must be half an arm's length long, and its skin is thick and tough. It would be difficult to deal with it with just a gun."
Chen Yongqiang understood that the two brothers wanted to use his marksmanship to share the risks. He considered it and decided that cooperation wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
"If we succeed, how will we divide the spoils?"
"As per the old rules, we'll divide it into three portions." Zhang Jianjun held up three fingers. "We brothers will get one portion, and you'll get yours separately."
Chen Yongqiang calculated that he was at a disadvantage, having to split the gun and bullets equally with the two men. However, he had other plans regarding the wild boar king.
"Sure," Chen Yongqiang paused, "but the wild boar king's heart must belong to me."
The most valuable part of a wild boar is its belly; the heart doesn't fetch much money.
Zhang Jianjun and his younger brother exchanged a glance and readily agreed, "Okay, it's settled then!"
"Where exactly is it located?" Chen Yongqiang asked.
"In the area of the black pine forest on the north slope, that guy often comes out at dusk."
Zhang Jianjun added, "This beast is very cunning; we followed it twice, but it got away both times."
Chen Yongqiang nodded: "Wait until I prepare some special ammunition. If you find anything, go to Shimen Village and let me know."
"Alright! Then we two brothers will wait for Brother Yongqiang."
Watching Chen Yongqiang's departing figure, Zhang Jianguo leaned close to his brother's ear and asked, "Brother, what does he need that heart for?"
Zhang Jianjun didn't care. "Who cares? As long as the most valuable pig's stomach is ours."
The heart of the Wild Boar King is the key ingredient for refining the Body Tempering Pill, and Chen Yongqiang must obtain it.
The reason he agreed to cooperate with the Zhang brothers was to have another source of information; he didn't know how long it would take him to find the information on his own.
Chen Yongqiang strolled around the market and bought some trinkets.
Seeing that the sun was almost overhead, I remembered my promise to Wang Guixiang, so I got on my bicycle and started walking back.
When we arrived at the place where the vegetable stall used to be, we saw a few vegetable leaves scattered on the ground, and the stall had already been packed up.
He turned the car around and entered the alley leading to Wang Guixiang's rented room.
As he approached the wooden door at the end of the alley, he could already smell the aroma of stir-fried dishes.
Wang Guixiang smiled when she saw Chen Yongqiang: "I figured you should be here by now. Come in quickly, the noodles just went into the pot, you've arrived just in time."
A small square table has been set up in the yard, with a plate of sliced cured meat and a plate of pickled vegetable shreds drizzled with sesame oil on it.
Chen Yongqiang handed over the pumpkin seeds he was holding: "I bought them on the way."
Wang Guixiang took the paper package: "Please sit down first, I'll go get the noodles."
Just as Chen Yongqiang sat down in the courtyard, a little girl of about eight or nine years old with pigtails walked in with her head down.
She was Wang Guixiang's daughter, Xiaojing. Xiaojing glanced quickly at Chen Yongqiang, her lips moved, but she didn't call out to him. She went straight to her mother, who was busy in the small kitchen.
She pulled off the badly worn canvas backpack from her shoulder: "Mom, my backpack is broken, I want to buy a new one."
Wang Guixiang was busy scooping noodles from the pot: "Where did it go bad? I'll sew it up for you when I'm done."
"It's been patched up again and again, it doesn't look good anymore!" Xiaojing's voice rose, tinged with tears.
"With such an old schoolbag, all the classmates in town laughed at me when I brought it to school!"
Wang Guixiang then turned around and took the schoolbag. She noticed that the seams at the bottom of the schoolbag had completely torn open, revealing a large tear, with several patches of different colors next to it.
Her tone softened: "Xiaojing, I know, but please bear with it for this month. I'll make sure it's sewed up nicely for you, and then..."
"You always say that!" Xiaojing's eyes reddened, and tears welled up in her eyes.
Chen Yongqiang stood up and beckoned to Xiao Jing: "Xiao Juan, come here. Your mother won't buy it for you, but Uncle Chen will."
Xiao Jing's teary eyes instantly lit up with surprise: "Really?"
"Of course it's true. Let's go to the supply and marketing cooperative now and pick one you like." Chen Yongqiang also likes children, and buying a schoolbag doesn't cost much.
Xiao Jing didn't move her feet immediately, but subconsciously turned her head to look at her mother first.
Wang Guixiang was still holding a spatula in her hand, her lips moved slightly as if she wanted to say something, but in the end she just sighed softly. She had just moved to the town, and her living conditions were naturally incomparable to those of the people in the town.
Xiaojing often came home crying from school, and there was nothing a woman like her could do.
With her mother's tacit approval, Xiao Jing immediately ran to Chen Yongqiang's side like a happy little bird, looking up at him with undisguised excitement on her face.
Chen Yongqiang naturally extended his hand, and Xiao Jing hesitated for a moment before placing her small hand into his broad, rough palm.
"Sister-in-law Guixiang, we'll be back in a bit," Chen Yongqiang said to Wang Guixiang's retreating figure.
Chen Yongqiang then took Xiaojing's hand, pushed open the courtyard gate, picked up the bicycle leaning against the wall, and led her toward the supply and marketing cooperative outside the alley.
Upon arriving at the entrance of the supply and marketing cooperative, Chen Yongqiang parked the car and led Xiao Jing inside.
The interior is much cooler than the outside, with wooden counters lined up in a row and various goods displayed in glass cases.
He led Xiaojing directly to the stationery counter.
Several samples were hanging above the counter, including a trendy military green canvas backpack.
"Comrade, take a look at that schoolbag," Chen Yongqiang pointed.
The saleswoman was a middle-aged woman who took off her schoolbag and handed it to Xiaojing.
Xiao Jing touched her schoolbag, rummaged through the inner compartments, and couldn't put it down.
"Do you like this?" Chen Yongqiang asked.
Xiao Jing nodded vigorously, her eyes almost glued to her schoolbag.
"I'll take this one," Chen Yongqiang said to the sales clerk, his gaze sweeping over the counter.
"Then take that tin pencil case, and this set of pencils with erasers, and that pencil sharpener."
As the sales clerk picked up the items, she smiled and said to Chen Yongqiang, "Comrade, you're such a generous father."
