The search lasted all morning, and Chen Yongqiang specially found a stream to rest by in order to take care of Ding Wanru.

"Let's rest here for a bit," Chen Yongqiang gestured.

Ding Wanru put down her medicine basket, sat down on a blue stone by the stream, scooped up some clear stream water to wash her face, and immediately felt much more relaxed.

Chen Yongqiang walked a few steps along the stream bank, his eyes searching the clear water: "I'll go see if there are any fish ahead."

Eating dry rations all day left his mouth feeling bland, and he thought it would be great if he could catch a few fresh fish to improve his meals.

The stream was shallow and clear, and you could clearly see several silver shadows swimming among the round pebbles on the bottom.

There were three or four small-scaled salmon, the largest of which was about the size of a palm.

Chen Yongqiang found a tree branch of moderate thickness and sharpened one end with the machete he carried with him.

Looks like we'll be having fish today.

He chose to fish because he didn't want to disturb the wild boar king with his shotgun; he had finally tracked it down here.

Arriving at the stream, Chen Yongqiang spotted the larger one, threw it forcefully, and the tip of the branch pierced the fish's body.

He lifted the still-swishing slender salmon out of the water, saying, "One isn't enough for two people."

Chen Yongqiang followed the same method and successfully inserted the needle into three fish.

Back on shore, Ding Wanru had already gathered some dry firewood and was squatting on the ground sorting through the harvest in her medicine basket.

When she saw him return carrying fish, her eyes lit up: "These fine-scaled salmon are truly rare."

"The flowing water in the mountain stream is perfect for raising this kind of fish." Chen Yongqiang was processing the fish scales. "It's a pity we don't have ginger and garlic to remove the fishy smell, so we can only make do with some wild mountain peppers."

Ding Wanru took out a few stalks of lemongrass with a refreshing lemon scent from the medicine basket: "This might be useful; it's the best for removing fishy smells and enhancing the flavor when cooking fish."

Chen Yongqiang took it, smelled it, and nodded approvingly: "You're so thoughtful."

The campfire was quickly lit, and the slender salmon strung on the branches slowly turned over the flames, their skin gradually turning golden and crispy.

"It's almost done, you can have a taste!" Chen Yongqiang handed the grilled fish to Ding Wanru first.

Ding Wanru took the grilled fish, put it in her mouth, and couldn't help but exclaim, "The fish is so tender, it truly lives up to its reputation."

Chen Yongqiang tore off a piece of crispy fish meat; the slender-scaled salmon was incredibly delicious. "If we can't find the Wild Boar King today, we'll have to turn back!"

He looked downstream and said, "It will be very dangerous to go any further."

Ding Wanru also expressed her understanding, saying that she had already achieved her purpose in going into the mountains: "You're right, it's true that you can't stay in these deep forests for long."

"Let's chase after them for another half a day and see!" Chen Yongqiang swallowed the last bite of fish.

As he was making plans, a mountain gust of wind suddenly swept up fallen leaves and hit him in the face.

The sunlight that had been filtering through the trees had disappeared without us noticing, and the sky quickly darkened.

A muffled rumble of thunder came from afar, and the birds in the forest scattered in panic.

"The weather is about to change." Chen Yongqiang looked up at the churning dark clouds in the sky. The weather in the mountains and forests was quite unpredictable.

The two quickly packed their things and looked for shelter from the rain. After walking for a while, Ding Wanru pointed to the other side of the stream: "There's a cave under the cliff over there. Let's go there to take shelter from the rain!"

Chen Yongqiang looked in the direction she pointed and saw a cave entrance hanging above the stream bank.

He analyzed, "We can't go there. Look at those withered branches and rotten grass at the cave entrance; they were all washed up by the water. Mountain rains come quickly at this time of year. If a torrential rain comes and the stream swells, the cave entrance, which faces the river, will be flooded in no time."

Before Chen Yongqiang could finish speaking, large raindrops began to pelt down.

Chen Yongqiang quickly slung his hunting rifle over his shoulder and pulled Ding Wanru up, saying, "Stay close to me."

The two hurried up the hillside as the rain intensified, and soon a white mist rose from the forest.

Chen Yongqiang pushed aside a thicket of bushes and discovered a shallow cave hidden behind a boulder: "Let's hide here for a while."

Although the cave entrance is not large, its high location just avoids potential flash floods.

They had just crawled into the cave when it started pouring rain outside.

Ding Wanru brushed the raindrops off her clothes: "This rain just started out of nowhere."

Chen Yongqiang held up his hunting rifle and surveyed the cave.

Inside the cave, there were many dry branches and weeds scattered about, and a faint fishy smell permeated the air.

"This looks like some kind of animal's den!" he exclaimed, his gaze sweeping through the dimly lit cave.

Ding Wanru subconsciously moved closer to him, somewhat nervously asking, "Will there be any danger?"

"It's alright, I'm here!" Chen Yongqiang gripped his hunting rifle tightly, his gaze resolute. "Even if a tiger comes, I'm not afraid."

He gestured for Ding Wanru to stay where she was, and then walked a few steps deeper into the cave.

Using the dim light filtering through the cave entrance, he noticed several deep scratch marks on the cave wall, which looked like they were left by a large animal.

"Look at these marks," Chen Yongqiang squatted down and measured the depth of the scratches with his fingers.

"It should be a black bear. But judging from how dry this grass is, it hasn't been back for quite some time."

Ding Wanru breathed a slight sigh of relief, but still couldn't help looking around: "Are we safe now?"

"It's safe for now." Chen Yongqiang stood up and dusted off his hands.

"However, just to be on the safe side, we should stay near the cave entrance. That way, we can retreat in time if that guy suddenly comes back."

As he spoke, he cleared a space near the cave entrance and placed the shotgun within easy reach.

The rain continued to pour outside, but the cave was unusually quiet, with only the soft breathing of the two people audible.

Ding Wanru sat down in the cleaned-up area and couldn't help but glance at the cave entrance again: "I wonder when this rain will stop."

Chen Yongqiang sat down beside her, but his gaze never left the depths of the cave: "The rain in the mountains comes quickly and goes quickly."

He gathered up the scattered dry branches in the cave and started a small fire.

The flickering flames from the disc player dispelled the chill in the cave, making Ding Wanru feel more comfortable.

Ding Wanru approached the fire, warming her hands against it, and looked worriedly at the rain-shrouded mountains and forests outside the cave: "With this rain, the mountain paths will probably become muddy and difficult to traverse."

"It's not just difficult to walk; the rain will wash away all traces, even the hoof prints left by the wild boar king will be washed away completely."

Ding Wanru sensed the regret in his voice and gently comforted him, "At least we've gained quite a bit from this trip. Those medicinal herbs and deer antlers are rare treasures."

Chen Yongqiang nodded, but his gaze kept drifting towards the outside of the cave.

Rainwater flowed down the rock wall, forming a curtain of water at the cave entrance.

He knew that the rain not only interrupted their pursuit, but also meant that the mountain road ahead would be full of unknown dangers.

"Once the rain subsides, we need to hurry down the mountain." Chen Yongqiang decided to turn back and stop chasing the wild boar king.
