Reborn in the 1980s: Nine Stunning Beauties Get Pregnant Before Marriage
Chapter 44 Your gun is really fast.
Ding Wanru's cheeks burned even more when Wang Laoshuan asked her this question, and she quickly lowered her head to cover it up: "No, it's nothing, I just think this wild rabbit meat is especially delicious."
Chen Yongqiang, oblivious to her unusual behavior, picked up another piece of meat and casually asked, "Wanru, do you still have the medicinal herbs you used for stewing the wild rabbit?"
He realized he'd been eating stir-fried rabbit meat with chili peppers lately, and the flavor was monotonous; he was tired of it. "I was thinking of taking some home and trying it myself."
Ding Wanru immediately replied, "Yes, I'll wrap some up for you in a bit."
After a while, Ding Wanru had almost finished eating the rabbit meat, so she put down her chopsticks, got up, and went into the inner room.
She opened the bottom drawer of the medicine cabinet, picked out a few medicinal herbs, and wrapped them in kraft paper.
"Take these for now, and come back for more when you're done." She handed the paper package to Chen Yongqiang.
"How much is this?" Chen Yongqiang took the paper package and was about to take out his money.
Ding Wanru refused, "I don't need money. Just take me with you next time you go into the mountains to collect herbs."
These words reminded Chen Yongqiang of the time he took her into the mountains some time ago, ostensibly to collect herbs, but she ended up twisting her ankle.
"I let you sprain your ankle last time..." Chen Yongqiang said before he could finish.
Ding Wanru quickly interjected, "That was my own carelessness. I feel at ease going into the mountains with you."
Chen Yongqiang didn't refuse anymore: "Okay, I'll call you next time we go into the mountains."
As the two were talking, a series of hurried footsteps suddenly came from outside the courtyard.
Liang Meie held up her flashlight, the beam swaying wildly in the night. Before she even entered the courtyard, an anxious shout came first: "Yongqiang, what are you doing here? I've been looking for you everywhere!"
Chen Yongqiang turned to look at her: "Sister-in-law Mei'e, what's the rush?"
Leaning against the fence gate, Liang Meie gasped for breath: "Quick, grab your hunting rifle and come with me! Wild boar! Wild boars have come to my field!"
Since her family was allocated land, they have been extremely attentive to it, and the newly sprouted corn in the field is her lifeline.
These days she often goes to the fields at night, both to prevent wild boars from damaging the crops.
She also harbored the thought that if she really encountered one, she could ask Chen Yongqiang to hunt a wild boar and get a few pounds of meat in return. Unexpectedly, she actually ended up guarding it tonight.
Chen Yongqiang's eyes lit up at the mention of wild boar. He grabbed the hunting rifle leaning against the table, checked the barrel, and said, "Let's go!"
He turned back and nodded to Ding Wanru and Wang Laoshuan: "You two eat first, I'll be right back."
After saying that, he stepped out of the courtyard and hurried to the fields with Liang Meie.
Ding Wanru stared blankly in the direction they had disappeared, lost in thought.
Old Wang sealed up the unfinished wine: "Dr. Ding, thank you for your hospitality tonight. I should head back now."
Chen Yongqiang strode ahead beside Liang Meie. "Can you see how many wild boars there are?" He habitually looked at the distant mountain shadows.
Liang Meie, panting, said with the flashlight beam flailing wildly in front of her feet, "I... I didn't count them all... I just saw a group of dark figures digging up the crops in the field, which scared me so much that I rushed here to find you."
She paused, her breathing calming down slightly, "I went to your house first. Xiulian said you went into the mountains. I didn't expect you to be here with Wanru."
There was a subtle probing in his words, but Chen Yongqiang didn't respond.
His attention had already been drawn to the faint sounds coming from the fields in the distance.
That was the sound of crops being trampled and devoured, mixed with the heavy breathing of wild animals.
Chen Yongqiang stopped and gestured for Liang Meie to turn off her flashlight.
At the edge of that cornfield, several blurry black shadows were wriggling, and wherever they went, the corn seeds in the ground were dug up and eaten by wild boars.
"You wait here," Chen Yongqiang said softly to Liang Meie.
Using the faint moonlight, Chen Yongqiang crouched down and moved towards the edge of the field.
He crouched down when he was still a dozen meters away from the wild boar herd. He couldn't get any closer; wild boars have a keen sense of smell, and the slightest disturbance would set them into a frenzy.
Under the moonlight, five or six dark figures could be vaguely seen, the largest weighing about two hundred pounds, while the smaller ones darted around beside it.
He quickly calculated in his mind: once the gun goes off, these guys will definitely rush into the mountains, so we have to block their retreat.
Chen Yongqiang began to meander along the drainage ditch toward the rear of the wild boar herd.
When he circled around to the back of the slope, he got stuck on the only path between the wild boar herd and the forest.
Now, those wild boars that are busy destroying crops are right within range.
Chen Yongqiang set up his double-barreled shotgun, pressed the butt against his cheek, and aimed at the largest male wild boar, which weighed over 200 pounds.
In the past, when we used muskets, we wouldn't dare touch something this big.
The first gunshot shattered the silence of the night.
The bullet struck the largest male wild boar squarely in the shoulder, and it let out a mournful howl, rolling around on the edge of the field.
The startled wild boars immediately scattered and fled in all directions.
Chen Yongqiang adjusted the muzzle of his gun, and with a second shot, a sow that was fleeing eastward fell to the ground.
He quickly ejected the spent cartridge and loaded the ammunition, his movements fluid and effortless.
Soon, two more gunshots rang out, and two half-grown wild boars that were fleeing down the hillside fell to the ground at the same time.
Before the smoke of battle had even cleared, three wild boar carcasses lay strewn across the edge of the field.
Just then, the first boar that had been shot struggled to its feet. Its eyes were bloodshot, and it charged straight at Chen Yongqiang like a madman.
Chen Yongqiang remained calm and pushed open the magazine with his right hand. The beast had already rushed three meters away and was about to pounce on him.
"Bang!"
The fifth shot rang out, and the flames from the gun almost reached the wild boar's face.
The bullet struck him squarely between the eyebrows. The immense impact sent his forward-leaning body crashing to his knees before collapsing to the ground at Chen Yongqiang's feet.
Chen Yongqiang reloaded two bullets into his double-barreled shotgun, keeping the muzzle warily pointed at the largest wild boar.
By the moonlight, he could see the hideous bullet hole in the wild boar's head; the last shot had pierced the skull, and that shot was the most fatal.
Chen Yongqiang stepped forward and kicked the wild boar's sturdy neck with his toe to confirm that the beast was dead.
"His vitality is really tenacious; he only went down after being shot twice," he muttered to himself.
The fields fell silent again, until Liang Meie's voice, barely audible, drifted from afar: "Yongqiang, did you hit him?"
"Got it," Chen Yongqiang replied.
Liang Meie then jogged over, flashlight in hand. The beam first fell on Chen Yongqiang, then moved to the ground.
When she saw the huge wild boar clearly, she gasped, "My goodness, this wild boar is enormous!"
The flashlight beam lingered on the wild boar for a moment, then she sighed regretfully, "It's a pity the others all ran away..."
"They didn't run away. We took down four in total," Chen Yongqiang said calmly.
"Four heads?!" Liang Meie exclaimed in surprise, almost dropping the flashlight.
She hurriedly swept the beam of light around and, sure enough, found another wild boar carcass under the ridge of a field not far away.
Chen Yongqiang walked to another spot and dragged over two wild boars, each weighing about a hundred pounds.
Upon seeing this, Liang Meie took a long time to speak: "Your gun is fast! How much flesh must there be in that?"
