Busy figures could be seen everywhere on the ridges of the fields, and the villagers were all working with great enthusiasm.

The household responsibility system gave everyone hope, and even Erlaizi, who usually loved to slack off, was now bending over and loosening the soil in his own field.

After sowing the corn seeds, Chen Yongqiang said to Lin Xiulian, "Go back and cook first, leave the watering to me."

Lin Xiulian responded, picked up the hoe, and walked back.

Chen Yongqiang picked up the buckets and went to fetch water from the ditch dozens of meters away.

His gaze, however, involuntarily drifted toward the distant Qinglong Mountain.

He thought to himself: I wonder if there is a water source on Qinglong Mountain. If we could bring it over, we wouldn't have to carry water back and forth to this high place.

The plot of land he was allocated was on higher ground, and whenever he watered it, the water always flowed downhill, making it a real struggle.

When Chen Yongqiang brought back the first load of water, he remembered the spiritual spring in his space and secretly added some to the bucket.

He then poured the water mixed with the spiritual spring water onto the newly sown seeds, secretly hoping that these seeds would grow into different seedlings.

Just as he bent down to water the plants, he suddenly heard footsteps coming from the edge of the field.

Liang Meie, carrying a bamboo basket, walked over with a smile: "Yongqiang, what are you planning to plant on this land?"

The four mu of land allocated to her family is not far from here. Because she has to support a son and a daughter, as well as take care of her elderly parents-in-law, she is the only able-bodied person in the family.

Chen Yongqiang straightened up and put the water ladle back into the bucket: "Plant some corn and sweet potatoes. What's in this basket?"

Liang Meie lifted the cloth covering the basket, revealing several tender green seedlings: "These are eggplant seedlings I brought from my parents' home. I was thinking of planting a few along the edge of the field. Your land is on higher ground, so watering them must be difficult, right?"

Chen Yongqiang glanced at her plot of land. "You're right. You have to take care of four acres by yourself. Can you manage?"

Liang Meie smiled wryly, "I have to keep busy even if I can't manage it all. Fortunately, my parents-in-law can help take care of the children, but carrying water is really tiring."

Looking at her frail body, Chen Yongqiang thought of the family she had left behind after her husband's accident at the mine last year, and his heart softened: "After I finish watering the fields, I'll help you carry some water."

Liang Meie quickly waved her hand, "How could I possibly accept this..."

"We're all from the same village, no need to be so polite," Chen Yongqiang interrupted her, bending down to continue watering the plants.

Liang Meie stood on the edge of the field watching Chen Yongqiang, who had a muscular build, work. The more she looked at him, the more she liked him. If it weren't for Lin Xiulian, she would have wanted to live with Chen Yongqiang.

She quickly carried her bamboo basket to her own field, dug several small holes along the edge of the field with a hoe, and planted the eggplant seedlings one by one.

As expected, Chen Yongqiang kept his word. After finishing his work in his own fields, he picked up a bucket, went to the irrigation ditch to fetch another load of water, and carried it to Liang Meie's field.

"You water this bucket first, and I'll fetch more after you're done," Chen Yongqiang said, putting down the bucket. He had also added some spiritual spring water to the water.

Liang Meie stepped forward and took out a handkerchief from her bosom: "You've worked hard, let me wipe your sweat!"

Her movements were natural and intimate, completely disregarding the opinions of others.

Chen Yongqiang subconsciously looked around. It was midday, and most of the people working in the fields had gone home for lunch. Only a few blurry figures were busy in the distance, and no one paid any attention to what was happening in their area.

He then relaxed and let Liang Meie wipe the sweat from his forehead.

"Tonight..." Liang Meie hinted to Chen Yongqiang, her face already flushed slightly before she finished speaking.

Chen Yongqiang nodded in understanding and then helped her carry several more buckets of water.

With Chen Yongqiang's help, Liang Meie quickly finished planting all the vegetable seedlings.

"I'll head back now. I'll leave the door open for you tonight." Liang Meie picked up the empty basket, gave Chen Yongqiang a grateful look, and walked home along the ridge of the field.

After lunch, Chen Yongqiang took a short rest before picking up his hoe and returning to the field.

He planted the remaining sweet potatoes and several other common vegetables.

By the time the sun had set and the entire plot of land was finally planted, Chen Yongqiang stood on the edge of the field, looking at the land with a sense of accomplishment.

When Chen Yongqiang returned to the yard carrying his hoe, Lin Xiulian was stirring the last dish at the stove. Seeing him enter, she turned around and smiled, "You're back just in time, the food is ready."

The two sat down around the square table. Lin Xiulian served Chen Yongqiang a bowl of porridge and couldn't help but mutter, "Our land is so dry. We've planted the seeds, but if it doesn't rain for a long time, I don't know how the harvest will be."

Chen Yongqiang took a bite of his steamed bun: "Don't worry, our land will definitely have a good harvest."

It would be strange if even a sacred spring couldn't irrigate good crops.

After finishing the last bite of his steamed bun, Chen Yongqiang changed into his rubber boots and took the bird gun down from the wall.

As he strapped his headlamp to his head, he said to Lin Xiulian, who was clearing away the dishes, "I'm going to go up the mountain to see if I can bring back some game."

Lin Xiulian looked up at him: "You've been working so hard these past few days, you shouldn't go!"

"It's okay, I'm not tired!" Chen Yongqiang said as he walked into the yard.

Strangely enough, since drinking the spiritual spring water, he not only did not feel tired, but he became more and more energetic as he worked, as if he had inexhaustible energy.

Lin Xiulian stared at his strong back and wondered to herself: Is this man made of iron? He has been doing heavy work all day, but he seems more energetic than when he left in the morning.

Chen Yongqiang slung his musket over his shoulder and headed towards Qinglong Mountain. Little did he know that the spiritual spring water had been subtly tempering his physique these past few days, making his muscles and bones stronger through his labor.

He went out in the evening mainly because he had made an appointment with Liang Meie. He glanced at the sky and thought it was still a bit early, so he decided to take his musket and wander around outside first.

But as soon as he strolled to the edge of the field at the east end of the village, the beam of his headlamp swept forward and he spotted a wild rabbit nibbling on grass.

The rabbit was stunned by the light and stood frozen in place, not knowing how to run away.

Chen Yongqiang was an experienced hunter; he wasn't about to let this opportunity slip by.

He raised his musket, aimed, and pulled the trigger.

"Bang!"

A gunshot rang out, and the rabbit fell to the ground.

Chen Yongqiang walked over, picked up the still twitching rabbit, and weighed it in his hand; it must have weighed at least three or four pounds.

"We're lucky; we got off to a good start. Now Sirius has food to eat."

The wolf cub he was referring to was the one he had picked up from Qinglong Mountain a few days ago.

The baby is growing bigger every day; drinking goat's milk alone isn't enough, it's time to feed him some meat. That's one of the reasons he insisted on going out for a walk tonight.

Chen Yongqiang hung the wild rabbit on his waist and reloaded the musket with gunpowder and iron shot.

Continue up the ridge to search for other prey.

Before they had gone far, they spotted another rabbit, and the musket fired again, taking down yet another rabbit.

"Strange, why are there so many wild rabbits today?" Chen Yongqiang picked up a wild rabbit from the ground and looked up at Qinglong Mountain.
