Lin Xiangdong walked to the door, but instead of looking at his father, he stared at the tractor for several moments.

He walked halfway around the front of the truck, reached out and touched the headlights, then looked at the tools in the truck bed.

"Yongqiang, did you buy this tractor?" Lin Xiangdong's tone was a little sour.

"Yes, I bought it not long ago." Chen Yongqiang used to be poor and didn't have much contact with Lin Xiuzhen's family.

Lin Xiangdong clicked his tongue, then turned his gaze to his father: "Dad, you're leaving already?"

"Go to Shimen Village for a few days and help Yongqiang fix the doors and windows." Lin Wenfeng put a cloth bag containing a change of clothes on the truck bed.

Lin Xiangdong then looked at Chen Yongqiang: "You hired my father to make doors and windows, how was the payment calculated?"

Chen Yongqiang was about to answer when Lin Wenfeng interrupted him:

Why are you asking that?

Lin Xiangdong chuckled twice: "Dad, I'm just worried about you. You're so old, you can't go out and work for nothing, can you?"

Chen Yongqiang then spoke up: "My great-uncle said we can exchange it for grain and send it directly to our house."

"Aren't you going to pay me?" Lin Xiangdong was not happy.

Lin Wenfeng wanted the grain because he was wary of his second son.

Lin Xiangdong squandered all the money he used to earn from working for others.

"Yongqiang, let's go!" Lin Wenfeng climbed onto the tractor first, his face not looking too good.

Seeing that the atmosphere was not right, Chen Yongqiang stopped talking to Lin Xiangdong and started the tractor. Black smoke came out of the exhaust and it slowly drove forward.

Lin Wenfeng remained silent the entire way, lost in thought. Chen Yongqiang also kept quiet, focusing on driving.

After a long while, Lin Wenfeng suddenly sighed:

"I'm sorry to have embarrassed you, that kid is good for nothing."

Chen Yongqiang replied with a polite remark: "Uncle, please make yourself at home. If you need anything, just let me know, don't be shy."

That was Lin Wenfeng's family matter, and Chen Yongqiang didn't want to get involved or ask any more questions.

Whether the son lives off his parents or not, and who gets paid or not, is the Lin family's business.

Why is someone from another family getting involved?

Back in Shimen Village, as soon as the tractor came to a stop on the homestead, Zhao Fugen came to greet him.

Seeing his old buddy Lin Wenfeng, he said, "Old Lin, you've finally come! It's been a while. You're still in good health, aren't you?"

Lin Wenfeng got out of the car: "Sturdy my foot, you're an old man. You haven't changed much, still the same old you."

Zhao Fugen laughed and handed him a cigarette: "Come on, have a smoke first."

Lin Wenfeng had quit smoking, but he still reached out and took the cigarette. The two stood by the car and started chatting.

Chen Yongqiang didn't disturb them. He went around to the back of the truck bed and started unloading the tools.

Because the house wasn't finished yet, they could only temporarily set up a room for Lin Wenfeng in a corner of the construction shed.

With the carpenter in place, the construction of the house progressed much faster.

Lin Wenfeng is a veteran craftsman who has been doing carpentry for decades and has built more houses than Chen Yongqiang has ever seen.

The first thing he did upon arriving at the construction site was not to rush into work, but to first walk around the site and carefully examine the structure of the five brick houses.

Chen Yongqiang followed behind him, listening to him talk as he walked.

"Your five single-story houses face south, a good layout. The main room is in the middle, with two bedrooms on each side; this is the most common way of building a house."

He walked up to the two rooms on the east side and gestured: "The windows can be opened wider so the morning sun can come in..."

Chen Yongqiang accepted Lin Wenfeng's suggestion: "Okay, let's do it your way."

Lin Wenfeng took out a measuring tape from his pocket and began to take measurements.

"I never expected you to have made it big, building such a huge house. Five large brick houses, only landlords used to have this kind of grandeur."

"Uncle is joking. What landlord or not? We just made a living and built a place for our family to shelter from the wind and rain." Chen Yongqiang had not yet mentioned his plan to build more side rooms.

"Young people are humble and promising. Unlike the rest of my family... never mind, let's not talk about them." Lin Wenfeng seemed to be talking to himself.

Chen Yongqiang also treated the craftsmen who helped build the house well, providing them with good wine and food every day.

After settling down in the shed, Lin Wenfeng began to think about the design and drew several sketches on paper.

In the afternoon, Chen Yongqiang told Lin Xiulian that he was going to town to pick up timber, then started the tractor and headed out.

He was indeed going to haul something away, but not timber; it was gold hidden in the mud and sand.

After leaving the village and turning onto the side road leading into the mountains, Chen Yongqiang parked the tractor in the usual spot, jumped off, and walked towards the stream.

The stream was much smaller than before, and more shallow pits were exposed in the riverbed. Chen Yongqiang took out his gold pan and started working.

The gold-bearing stone he found yesterday gave him confidence that the river contained not only gold sand but also gold nuggets and ore.

Chen Yongqiang squatted by the stream and scooped up several plates of gold dust; there was some, but not much.

He kept thinking about the gold-bearing stone from yesterday, feeling that there must be even bigger treasures in the river.

The sands are washed down from upstream and settle along the water flow. The further upstream you go, the more you might discover.

Chen Yongqiang walked upstream along the stream, scooping water as he went.

After walking for more than a mile and going around several large rocks, we came to a small valley in front of us.

The stream flows down a rock face, forming a small waterfall, only about the height of a person.

A pool of water, clear to the bottom, is formed beneath the waterfall.

Chen Yongqiang was standing by the pool, about to walk towards the stone wall, when his gaze was suddenly drawn to something.

He looked down into the pool and saw several small bright spots next to a few stones at the bottom, shimmering with a golden light in the sunlight.

"It's gold beans...we're rich!"

A few grains can be vaguely seen on the bottom of the water, sinking among the sand and pebbles, some exposed and some half-buried.

Chen Yongqiang counted them and saw seven or eight at a glance, while some were blocked by stones and could not be seen clearly.

After searching for so long and working myself to the bone all day, I only managed to find two or three gold beans.

There are more than just that number of stones visible at the bottom of this pool; if you were to scoop them all up, there would be at least a dozen.

Without saying a word, Chen Yongqiang stepped onto the stones and walked into the pool.

He bent down, reached into the water, grabbed a handful of sand and pebbles, and pulled them out of the water.

The water slipped through my fingers, leaving only a handful of sand and a few pebbles.

Chen Yongqiang used his other hand to brush the sand aside, revealing a few golden glints.

Three golden beans were mixed in with the sand and gravel. The largest one was about the size of a little finger, and the smallest one was about the size of a soybean.

He pulled out three in one go.

Chen Yongqiang put the gold beans into his spatial storage and then poured out the sand in his hand.

He picked up his tools again and started panning for gold in the pond. "The gold nuggets here, if melted together, would be enough to fill a small yellow croaker!"
