While waiting for the food to be served, Ding Wanru finally spoke up.

"When I was shopping just now, I also bought some things for Teacher Gao, thinking about how it's not easy for her to be here all alone. I spent a bit too much money."

After she finished speaking, it was as if she was afraid that Chen Yongqiang would blame her for wasting money.

Chen Yongqiang picked up the teapot and poured himself a cup of tea. "It's nothing. I was giving Teacher Gao something, but she was too embarrassed to accept it and was always very polite to me. It's perfect that you're giving it to her; since we're both women, she won't be as wary."

Ding Wanru felt relieved: "Then I'm relieved. I was worried you'd say I was wasting money."

"Spend it if you need to. It's really not easy for Teacher Gao, who lives alone in our village. Let's help him out if we can."

As we were chatting, the waiters started serving the dishes one after another.

Chen Yongqiang picked up his chopsticks, just as he was about to start eating, Yao Lina came out from behind the counter carrying a plate of cold dishes.

Chen Yongqiang glanced at it: "Director Yao, I didn't order cucumber salad."

"This plate of smashed cucumbers is a gift from me, it's free." Yao Lina's gaze swept over Chen Yongqiang and Ding Wanru's faces.

"It's rare for Boss Chen to bring someone over for dinner, especially such a beautiful young lady. As her older sister, shouldn't I show my appreciation?"

Upon hearing this, Ding Wanru's face flushed red, and she lowered her head, not daring to look at anyone.

Chen Yongqiang, on the other hand, said frankly, "Then thank you, Director Yao."

This dish wasn't given away for free, of course.

Yao Lina smiled and said, "By the way, Boss Chen, why haven't you sent any wild game over lately? We haven't seen any game in the shop for quite a while, and customers have asked about it several times."

Chen Yongqiang explained, "I've been busy building houses lately and haven't been to the mountains much."

He was telling the truth, but not entirely the truth.

It's true that they were busy building houses, and it's also true that they didn't go into the mountains much.

But more importantly, since he got a tractor, he has been taking all the game he hunts directly to the county town to sell.

The price is much higher than in town. Although it takes up a bit more gas to go back and forth, it's still worth it in the end.

Yao Lina simply smiled and nodded: "Okay, then when your house is finished, you'd better think of our shop more often."

"Of course," Chen Yongqiang replied.

Yao Lina then turned and left.

After Ding Wanru and the others had walked a distance, she asked in a low voice, "Are you really not planning to deliver goods to them?"

Chen Yongqiang picked up a piece of stir-fried potatoes, eggplant, and green peppers with his chopsticks: "It's not that we won't give it to you, it depends on the situation."

Previously, there were no other ways to sell their prey; they could only send it here. Yao Lina would pressure them to lower the price, and there was nothing he could do.

Chen Yongqiang knew what was going on, but back then there were no tractors, so he couldn't go very far and could only endure it.

It's different now.

With tractors, we can go to the county town whenever we want, and with good sales channels, who would still want to deliver here?

When they had almost finished eating, Chen Yongqiang looked at Ding Wanru and asked, "Are you full?"

Ding Wanru looked at the dishes on the table. There was still more than half a plate of sweet and sour pork left, the pork stew with vermicelli was barely touched, and the pot of stir-fried eggplant, potatoes, green peppers, and pickled cabbage with pork belly was almost untouched.

"I'm full. It's just a bit wasteful to leave so much..."

"It's alright, you can pack it up and take it back for Teacher Gao to try." Chen Yongqiang had deliberately ordered more than he should.

Letting Teacher Gao try the food from the state-run restaurant is more thoughtful than simply sending him gifts.

"I'll go borrow a lunchbox in a bit," Ding Wanru said, standing up to find a waiter.

After eating and drinking his fill, Chen Yongqiang stood up and went to the front desk to pay the bill.

He took out a wad of cash from his pocket, counted out a few bills, and handed them over.

As Yao Lina made her change, she smiled and sized him up, glancing at the tractor loaded with timber parked outside the door.

"Boss Chen has struck it rich! He bought a tractor and built a big house. Is he going to become the richest man in our town?"

"What do you mean by being the richest man? I'm just living a decent life." Chen Yongqiang didn't elaborate further.

What's so great about being the richest man in town? He's going to be the richest man in the country someday.

"You can't afford a tractor if you can't get by? These days, not many people can afford a tractor. When will your house be finished? I'll go take a look sometime and broaden my horizons." Yao Lina wanted to find out more.

"Come sit behind Shimen Village Primary School sometime," Chen Yongqiang replied casually, turning to walk back.

Ding Wanru had already packed up and was holding two lunchboxes wrapped in oil paper. She stood by the table waiting for him. The two of them left the restaurant one after the other.

"Let's go back quickly, Teacher Gao probably hasn't eaten yet." Ding Wanru said anxiously, carrying the bag.

Chen Yongqiang started the tractor and soon drove it out of town.

"Teacher Gao will be so happy if she knows we brought her something delicious." Ding Wanru was in a great mood today.

"She lives alone in the village, and I guess she usually just makes do with what she has. She's not getting enough nutrition, which is why she got sick," Chen Yongqiang explained the cause of her illness.

"That's right. A girl from the city, suffering all alone here..." Ding Wanru also felt a pang of sympathy.

Upon arriving at the village primary school, Ding Wanru jumped off the tractor first: "I'll take this to Teacher Gao first!"

Chen Yongqiang nodded, released the clutch, and the tractor continued to move forward.

When they arrived at the homestead, the villagers who had helped build the house had just finished eating and were sitting in twos and threes on the pile of bricks, smoking and chatting.

The two Qin sisters were clearing away the dishes when they heard the sound of a tractor. Qin Liping looked up and saw Chen Yongqiang jump off the tractor.

"Brother Yongqiang, why are you only just getting back? The food's all cold. Have you eaten? I'll heat it up for you."

Chen Yongqiang glanced at the food: "I've already eaten. I ate in town."

Qin Liping paused in her work of clearing the dishes: "Oh, it's good that you've eaten."

Chen Yongqiang stood next to the tractor and waved to Zhao Fugen, who was smoking over there.

"Uncle Fugen, come over and help me check on this batch of timber."

Zhao Fugen stood up and walked over to examine the wood grain.

"Good material. No wormholes or rotten cores, you got your money's worth."

"Yongqiang, this batch of timber is enough for doors and windows. But you need to find a good carpenter, don't just hire anyone and ruin this good material."

Chen Yongqiang nodded: "Does Uncle know anyone here?"

"There's an old carpenter in Linjiatun who's been doing this for over forty years. His skills are impeccable. Go ask him to come over, and he'll make sure it's perfectly finished. It's just that his price might be a bit high."

"It's okay if it's a bit expensive, as long as the work is good." Chen Yongqiang believes that if you're going to do something, you should do it well.

"Alright, I'll take you to see him tomorrow." Zhao Fugen patted the wooden block.

Chen Yongqiang nodded, about to agree, when he suddenly remembered something.

"Uncle Fugen, is that carpenter you mentioned short, a bit hunchbacked, and missing half a little finger on his left hand?"

Zhao Fugen was taken aback: "You know him?"

Chen Yongqiang smiled and said, "We're relatives, you could say. Xiulian calls him her great-uncle."

"That's great! It's easier to get things done with relatives, the price is easier to negotiate, and they can even do a more meticulous job for you."

Chen Yongqiang felt more confident. He knew Lin the carpenter's skills; most of the good furniture and doors and windows in the surrounding area were made by him.

I'm just getting older, so I haven't been taking on many jobs in the last couple of years.

"I'll go tomorrow. I'll take Xiulian with me; she's a relative, after all, so it'll be easier to talk to her."

Zhao Fugen looked at the cart of timber again: "Cover the timber up tonight, so it doesn't get wet with dew."
