Chapter 214 Spring Ploughing
Yang Dahai laughed heartily, nodded, turned around, and waved to the villagers who were still gathered around:
"Alright, alright! Everyone, move along! There's nothing more to see. Go home and cook!"
As the excitement subsided, the villagers, still chatting amongst themselves, dispersed in twos and threes.
Chen Yongqiang started the tractor and looked at Qin Liping.
There were still many people around, so Qin Liping felt embarrassed to move closer to the driver's seat: "Brother Yongqiang, I can walk back by myself."
Yang Dahai glanced at Qin Liping to the side and muttered to himself, "Why is Qin Shan's unmarried daughter always hanging around Chen Yongqiang?"
However, he only thought about it to himself and didn't ask any more questions.
Chen Yongqiang drove the tractor back to his own yard first.
Seeing the cart return, Qin Shan walked over and called out from afar, "Yongqiang, you're back? Did you buy the plow?"
Chen Yongqiang jumped off the tractor. "I bought it! Uncle Qin, come and check if I bought the right one!"
Qin Shan walked to the back of the vehicle and saw the heavy-duty single-furrow plow. He nodded repeatedly, "Yes, yes, that's it! Thickened manganese steel, perfect for our dry land!"
"As long as I didn't buy the wrong thing, that's fine."
As the two were talking, Qin Liping, who was a step behind, walked back into the courtyard and said, "Dad, I'm back."
Qin Shan frowned: "So you know how to come back? You're never home, what kind of behavior is that for a young lady?"
"I just went to the county town with Brother Yongqiang to broaden my horizons," Qin Liping explained softly.
If Qin Liping were to actually run off with the other young men in the village for a whole day, Qin Shan would definitely be furious.
But he went with Chen Yongqiang, so he didn't say anything more. Chen Yongqiang now held a different place in his heart.
Qin Liping quickly slipped away and ran into the kitchen to share the cooked food she had brought back from the county town with Lin Xiulian.
Qin Shan noticed something covering the back of the tractor. He lifted a corner and saw a bag of phosphate fertilizer: "Yongqiang, where did you get this fertilizer?"
Chen Yongqiang replied in a low voice, "I bought it at the secondhand market in the county town."
"Then why didn't you buy more?" Qin Shan knew all too well how important fertilizer was to crops.
"I wanted to too, but the boss only had this one package left," Chen Yongqiang said truthfully.
Just then, Qin Shan caught a glimpse of Yang Dahai walking over from the dirt road in the village.
He immediately and discreetly covered the fertilizer again, thinking, "This stuff will attract envy."
Chen Yongqiang understood immediately and casually picked up the dead chicken: "Uncle Qin, you're in for a treat today. The village chief is here too, let's have a couple of drinks together."
He walked to the edge of the yard and began to deal with the old hen.
In the kitchen, Qin Liping was excitedly telling Lin Xiulian and her sister Qin Lijuan about what she had seen and heard in the county town, how fast the tractors ran, how tall the houses were, and how lively the secondhand market was.
However, she was too embarrassed to talk about the dinner at the fancy restaurant, and she didn't dare to mention that Chen Yongqiang had spent more than ten yuan to treat her to dinner.
Qin Liping handed over the oil paper package, "Sister-in-law Xiulian, this is cooked food that Brother Yongqiang bought especially for you. It tastes especially good when it's hot, but it's a bit cold now."
Lin Xiulian took it: "It's okay, I'll just heat it up in a pan in a bit."
The women chatted about food in the kitchen, while the men talked about farm work in the yard.
Yang Dahai spoke up: "Yongqiang, your tractor plows the fields quickly. There are a few families in the village who don't have oxen, so spring plowing is difficult for them."
"Look... could you help with the plowing too? Of course, they can still pay for the fuel, but the wages might not be very high."
Before the household responsibility system was implemented, the land was cultivated collectively. Now, each household takes care of its own affairs.
Some families are poor and have a hard life, so Yang Dahai, as the village head, naturally has to take good care of them.
"Don't worry, village chief, it's just a small matter," Chen Yongqiang replied.
He had a systemic whim: he wanted to help a group of trusted and compatible villagers get rich first.
The dozen or so households that have decided to grow sorghum with him are naturally the priority recipients.
As for those petty people like Ma Cuiying, he had already blacklisted them and wouldn't help them with anything in the future.
When Yang Dahai saw that Chen Yongqiang agreed so readily, a smile of satisfaction appeared on his face. He praised Chen Yongqiang for his high level of awareness and for having the villagers in his heart.
"However, Uncle Qin Shan might have to put in a lot of effort to cultivate the land," Chen Yongqiang said, as he poured a ladle of water over the prepared old hen.
"I provide the tractor, and Uncle Qin provides the manpower and plows to till the land. All the wages earned go to Uncle Qin."
As Qin Shan and Yang Dahai wondered why he had made this arrangement, Chen Yongqiang continued to explain: "It's like this, I met a restaurant owner in the county town today, and his restaurant needs to supply wild game on a long-term basis."
"Like pheasants and rabbits. I'm planning to go into the mountains to get a batch of live animals. This work takes time, so I'll have to ask Uncle Qin to take care of the plowing."
I can probably earn a few dollars a day by plowing the land.
For families like Qin Shan's, which don't have a stable source of income, this is a considerable amount of extra money.
For Chen Yongqiang, it was just a matter of catching one or two more pheasants in the mountains.
Yang Dahai understood, so he turned to look at Qin Shan, wanting to hear his opinion.
Qin Shan didn't hesitate much. "Then I'll shamelessly take on this job. You focus on your big project in the mountains, and I'll take the tractor to handle the work in the fields."
He knew in his heart that he had taken advantage of Chen Yongqiang.
The matter of arable land was thus settled. Not long after, the aroma of stewing chicken soup wafted from the kitchen.
At dinner time, the kitchen was bustling with activity. Chen Yongqiang specially ladled out a large bowl of soup: "Xiulian, drink more soup and nourish yourself. You can eat all the dishes today."
"I can do it myself." Lin Xiulian took the soup bowl.
There was no hazelnut liquor tonight, but Chen Yongqiang took out a bottle of Erguotou and poured it for Yang Dahai and Qin Shan.
During the meal and conversation, he brought up the winemaking project he had been working on.
Yang Dahai picked up his wine glass, took a sip, nodded, then shook his head: "Brewing wine? That's indeed a good project; if done well, it can make a lot of money."
"But Yongqiang, you need to think this through. Our village's grain reserves are barely enough for our own consumption, let alone any extra grain to brew wine."
"This year... is the first year we have to pay grain taxes," Yang Dahai reminded him again.
These words silenced the dinner table for a moment. After the household responsibility system was implemented, according to regulations, each household had to complete the state's grain purchase quota first, and only the remaining grain would be their own ration.
"Village chief, don't worry, I know what I'm doing." Chen Yongqiang poured him a full glass of wine.
"It won't delay the delivery of grain to the state. I'll find another way to use the grain for brewing; I absolutely won't squeeze it out of the village's grain rations."
He had already planned ahead, knowing that the high-yield crops grown in the space would provide a safety net for his family's food supply.
The quota for grain to be handed over to the state can be raised by collecting some surplus grain from the villagers or buying some from other villages.
