As night fell, Chen Yongqiang put on his rubber boots, donned his headlamp, picked up his bird gun, and prepared to go hunting in the mountains once again.

Before leaving, he reminded Lin Xiulian, "Close the doors and windows tonight, I'm going for a walk in the mountains."

Lin Xiulian replied, "Understood, Brother Yongqiang."

Chen Yongqiang followed the path and entered Qinglong Mountain again.

Last night, the wild boars were frightened and certainly wouldn't dare go back to the edge of the field, so he could only try his luck elsewhere.

Upon reaching the mountainside, one naturally passes by the mountain god temple.

It was here that Chen Yongqiang activated the system, and his life gradually improved.

He went into the temple and respectfully offered a cup of wine to the mountain god.

The mountain god temple was very dilapidated. Chen Yongqiang picked up a small wine pot from his waist and poured three cups onto the stone platform in front of the temple.

He muttered under his breath, "May the mountain god protect me, so I can take the goods from your mountains and exchange them for food."

After saying this, he put the wine jug away. After looking around to make sure no one was there, he made a thought, and in a flash, he disappeared from the spot and re-entered the space.

The crops in the field were irrigated with the spiritual spring, yet they grew unexpectedly well.

The first three cucumber plants planted were lush and green, with tender cucumbers covered in fine thorns hanging from the vines. They would be ready to be harvested in a few days.

"We still need to complete more of the mountain god's tasks; this land needs the spiritual spring to irrigate it."

The six pheasants were growing quite well, and Chen Yongqiang put the eggs he had exchanged during the day into his space to incubate them.

After lingering in the space for a moment, he changed his mind and returned to the front of the mountain god temple.

Chen Yongqiang wandered around Qinglong Mountain for a long time, but didn't even see a shadow of a wild rabbit.

Looks like I'll be going home empty-handed tonight.

As night deepened, he put away his musket and prepared to head back.

Just then, a system notification sounded in my mind:

[Mission Hint: There is an injured animal that needs rescue about 100 meters to your left.]

Chen Yongqiang immediately changed direction and rushed in that direction, thinking, "I didn't expect to trigger a system task!"

After a while, sure enough, a fluffy figure was found behind the rock; it was a wolf cub that was less than two weeks old.

The little guy's hind legs were entangled in thorny vines, and he lay on the ground, his breathing very weak.

"Little one, don't be afraid, I'm here to help you."

The crevice in the rock didn't look like a wolf den, so Chen Yongqiang guessed that the wolf cub might have gotten tangled up while moving its den.

The mother wolf couldn't take it with her and had to abandon it here. Although the wolf cub was weak, it still retained its wild nature. It instinctively bared its teeth and made a warning sound.

But it was too small to pose any danger to Chen Yongqiang.

Chen Yongqiang first cautiously looked around, wondering where the mother wolf might be hiding, observing everything.

After finding nothing amiss, he took out his machete, cut the vines, and rescued the wolf cub.

Just then, a system notification sounded: [Rescue mission complete, reward 10 points of Blessing.]

"The injury is too severe; it won't survive in the wild." Chen Yongqiang looked at the wound on the wolf cub's leg.

"Since the mountain god guided me to rescue you, then come home with me." Chen Yongqiang wrapped the wolf cub in his clothes and held it in his arms.

Holding the furry little life in his arms, he quickened his pace down the mountain.

He thought to himself: If I can tame them, they will be a great help when I go hunting in the mountains.

But Chen Yongqiang knew very well that taming a wolf was a very difficult thing.

The little guy is still young, so we can't tell what his temperament is like yet.

As they grow older, the wildness ingrained in their bones will become impossible to hide.

At that point, baring their teeth and making faces would be the least of their worries; they might just bite back at you at any moment.

Otherwise, why would there be an old saying: "An ungrateful wretch can never be tamed!"

Chen Yongqiang carried the wolf cub down the mountain and returned to the village. In the distance, he could see that the window of the village doctor Ding Wanru's house was still lit.

Thinking that the little guy's foot injury needed to be treated, he knocked on Ding Wanru's door.

"Who is it?" Ding Wanru's voice came from inside the house.

"It's me, Yongqiang!"

Ding Wanru, wearing an overcoat, opened the door: "Brother Yongqiang, are you sick? Or injured?"

"It's not me, it's it." Chen Yongqiang pulled open the clothes wrapped around his arms, revealing the fluffy little head.

Ding Wanru examined the puppy under the lamplight, but didn't recognize it as a wolf cub, thinking it was a dog: "What's wrong with this puppy?"

She reached out and touched the wolf cub's droopy ears. "It looks so pitiful."

Chen Yongqiang didn't explain much, "I found it on the road. My foot is a little injured, and I wanted you to help me put some medicine on it."

After understanding the reason, Ding Wanru turned around and brought out a wooden medicine box from the inner room.

Chen Yongqiang sat down on the stool, held the wolf cub horizontally in his arms, revealing its injured paw.

Ding Wanru took out cotton cloth and medicinal wine from the medicine box. She was wearing a moon-white sleeveless vest, and her exposed arms were somewhat dazzling in front of Chen Yongqiang.

"Hold on tighter." She supported the wolf cub's paws with one hand, and with the other hand, she used a cotton cloth soaked in medicinal wine to carefully wipe the wound.

The little wolf cub squirmed restlessly in Chen Yongqiang's arms, letting out soft whimpers.

Ding Wanru quickly softened her movements, "It'll be done soon, okay?"

Chen Yongqiang could smell the faint herbal scent on her. The two were very close, and skin-to-skin contact was inevitable.

While applying the medicine, Ding Wanru suddenly brought up a topic: "I heard from people in the village that Lin Xiulian has moved into your house."

She didn't dare ask about things like sleeping in the same bed.

"Her father was going to sell her to an old bachelor in the neighboring village, so she came to my place to hide for a few days," Chen Yongqiang explained vaguely.

Ding Wanru lowered her head to wipe the wolf cub's wounds, as if talking to herself, "Oh, I see. When will she leave?"

Chen Yongqiang was speechless for a moment, not knowing how to answer the question.

In this secluded little mountain village, Ding Wanru harbored an inexplicable and elusive affection for Chen Yongqiang.

She still remembers that summer when she first saw Chen Yongqiang working shirtless in the production team.

Sweat streamed down his bronzed back, glistening in the sunlight.

He swung his pickaxe to clear the land, each swing carrying the tenacity unique to mountain dwellers.

She was still young then, hiding under the shade of a tree on the edge of the field, looking at this young man who was seven or eight years older than her, and felt as if something had gently bumped into her heart.

Ding Wanru still remembers the year she heard that Chen Yongqiang had married Lin Xiuzhen, she hid behind a haystack at the village entrance and cried until her sleeves were soaked.

She was only eighteen years old then, and the budding idea in her heart withered away.

When she learned that Chen Yongqiang and Lin Xiuzhen had divorced, the flame in her heart quietly reignited.

Before she could even muster the courage, Lin Xiulian moved into Chen Yongqiang's house.

Thinking of this, Ding Wanru unconsciously tightened her grip on the bandage, causing the little wolf cub to flinch in pain.

"Alright! Come back in a couple of days to change the dressing." Ding Wanru looked at his downcast eyes and swallowed the rest of her words.
