Reborn in the 1980s: Nine Stunning Beauties Get Pregnant Before Marriage
Chapter 141 Sharpening the axe won't delay the woodcutting work
In the evening, neighbors came to Chen Yongqiang's house to watch TV. He took the opportunity to go out with Tianlang.
The night was deep, with only a few dim lights shining in the village.
Sirius has been tamed by the system and is far more intelligent than ordinary dogs, understanding Chen Yongqiang's commands perfectly.
Outside Ding Wanru's courtyard, Chen Yongqiang stopped and whispered, "Stay here and keep watch."
Sirius responded with a low growl, then crouched down in the shadows beside the gate, ears perked up, like a proper guard.
The courtyard gate creaked open and then gently closed again.
Soon, the faint, indistinct, and intermittent voices of a man and a woman could be heard coming from inside the room.
Then came a few soft, amused reproaches, and then even the voices lowered.
Only the flickering flame of the oil lamp, reflected on the window paper, occasionally swayed almost imperceptibly.
Sirius's ears turned towards the door, paused for a moment, then turned back to continue performing their duties.
It heard a silence that was almost like breathing, an extremely long silence.
The night breeze rustled through the dried chilies under the eaves, and a dog barked twice in the distance before falling silent.
After a while, the door hinges started turning again.
Chen Yongqiang came out and closed the door behind him. Tianlang immediately stood up and rubbed his trouser leg against Chen Yongqiang's.
Chen Yongqiang patted Tianlang's sturdy back: "Let's go."
The figures of the man and the wolf disappeared silently into the night, and the dim yellow light inside the window of the Ding family courtyard soon went out.
The two have been secretly dating for some time.
Chen Yongqiang always came at the perfect time, sneaking out when the TV was at its most popular and the neighbors' attention was most diverted.
He never came empty-handed; sometimes he would bring a few snacks that were hard to find at the supply and marketing cooperative.
More often than not, they are practical things, like this "Barefoot Doctor's Manual".
With Sirius on lookout, they remained undetected for a long time.
The only one who had any doubts was He Jun, because everything in the He family had changed since Huang Xiaocui married into the family.
Although the girl's feet were not nimble, she was quick-witted and managed the household with great efficiency.
He Jun's macho attitude was completely tamed within half a month of their marriage.
Now, he hands over all the money he earns after work every day, not daring to keep a single penny for himself.
Having become henpecked, He Jun naturally lost interest in paying attention to Ding Wanru.
But when Chen Yongqiang returned to his own yard today, he attracted the attention of one person.
Liang Meie was leading her child back after watching TV when she asked, "Yongqiang, where have you been so late at night?"
"I went to town today, and Ding Wanru asked me to bring her some things, so I took them to her," Chen Yongqiang explained.
"What do you mean by taking so long to get something? It's already past eight o'clock." Liang Meie asked, somewhat puzzled.
Chen Yongqiang left home around 6 p.m. and stayed at Ding Wanru's house for a full two hours, enough time for him to have an affair twice.
Before Chen Yongqiang could answer, Liang Meie's daughter cried out, "Mom, I'm sleepy..."
Liang Meie could only pick up her daughter and say, "Let's go back now."
"Hurry back, don't let the child get cold," Chen Yongqiang changed the subject.
Liang Meie, holding her daughter, glanced back at Chen Yongqiang and said, "Okay, we'll head back now."
Chen Yongqiang stood there, watching Liang Meie and her daughter disappear behind the gate of the neighboring courtyard, before turning around and pushing open his own door.
Two days later, Chen Yongqiang returned to town to pick up the custom-made fishhooks.
The blacksmith was tidying up his tools when he saw him come in. He turned around and picked up two iron hooks from the corner.
"It was made to your dimensions. See if this is what you want."
Chen Yongqiang took it; the hook was about the size of his palm, and its shape was rough and somewhat crude.
"The polishing is... a little lacking," Chen Yongqiang said frankly.
The blacksmith wiped his hands with a towel and chuckled, "Young man, this hook of mine is perfectly tempered, with a tough core and a resilient edge. It can hold a pig weighing several hundred pounds without breaking. You're buying it to hang pork, right? Don't worry, it'll work perfectly!"
Chen Yongqiang didn't explain, but although it was rough, the basic shape and strength seemed to be fine, and the rest could be processed by himself.
He paid the remaining balance. Before turning away, he pointed to the whetstones piled up in the shed: "Boss, I need to fix the edges of this hook when I take it back. Could you give me a whetstone? A small one will do."
The old craftsman was in a good mood: "Take it."
Chen Yongqiang thanked him and put the two iron hooks and the whetstone into the cloth bag he carried with him.
After leaving the blacksmith's shop, Chen Yongqiang did not rush back to the village.
He rode his bicycle, turned into another alley, and arrived at the gate of the small courtyard where Wang Guixiang rented.
After parking his car, he took two frozen carp from the handlebars before knocking on the door.
The door opened, and Wang Guixiang, wearing an apron, smiled at him, her gaze falling on the fish in his hand: "You're here, I told you not to buy anything, you're wasting money again."
Chen Yongqiang stepped into the house. "I didn't buy it. I caught it myself at Qingba Reservoir. It's very fresh. I just wanted to add some food for you and your daughter."
It was much warmer inside than outside, and something was steaming on the stove.
When Wang Guixiang's daughter saw Chen Yongqiang, she immediately called out, "Godfather!"
"Hey." Chen Yongqiang smiled and handed the fish to Wang Guixiang.
Wang Guixiang took the fish, her heart warming. "You too, running around by the reservoir in this freezing weather. Sit down for a bit, the steamed buns in the pot will be ready soon, why don't you eat before you go?"
"I'm not eating anymore." Chen Yongqiang waved his hand and sat down at the table.
He looked around the clean and tidy room, the stove was burning brightly, and the rice and noodles were visible, which put his mind at ease.
"Is there anything else we need here? Is there enough coal?"
"That's enough, they're all fine." Wang Guixiang put the fish into the basin.
After exchanging a few more pleasantries and inquiring about the children's recent situation, Chen Yongqiang, seeing that there was nothing else for him to arrange, got up to take his leave.
"Are you really not going to eat here anymore?" Wang Guixiang saw him to the door.
"No, I have other things to do." Chen Yongqiang hopped on his bicycle, his mind preoccupied with the giant creature in the reservoir.
"Eat the fish while it's fresh. I have plenty of fish; I'll bring you a few more later."
"Okay, drive carefully." Wang Guixiang stood by the door, watching him pedal his bicycle out of the alley before turning back into the house.
Back home, Chen Yongqiang didn't even have time to rest. He sat down in a corner of the yard and took out the two iron hooks and the whetstone.
It started grinding away "ho ho" on the rough stone surface.
Lin Xiulian brought out a basin of hot water and poured a ladleful into the wooden bucket next to her.
Looking at the palm-sized hook in Chen Yongqiang's hand, she couldn't help but ask, "How big of a fish would it have to be to bite with a hook that big?"
Chen Yongqiang's hands didn't stop moving, the millstone being pushed and pulled rhythmically: "It's probably a fish weighing one or two hundred pounds."
"Are there fish that big in Qingba Reservoir?" Lin Xiulian's voice was tinged with doubt.
Chen Yongqiang paused slightly while sharpening the hook: "Yes, I saw it a few days ago."
The grinding sound of "whoosh—whoosh—" rang out again.
