Chapter 139 Upgrading Equipment
The next day, the temperature was below zero, and it was still very cold.
Chen Yongqiang ate something simple and then prepared to go out to town to buy fishing equipment.
He looked into the house and asked Lin Xiulian, "Is there anything you need at home? I'll bring it back with me."
Lin Xiulian thought for a moment and then mentioned a few daily necessities that needed to be replenished.
After making a note of it, Chen Yongqiang pushed his bicycle out the door.
A cold wind blew in his face, and there were few pedestrians on the road. He pedaled his bike, pondering what kind of fishing line and hook he should buy to catch that big guy in the reservoir.
On the way, Chen Yongqiang met Gao Yuan'ai, a volunteer teacher in the village.
"Teacher Gao, are you going to town? Do you need a ride?" Chen Yongqiang parked his bicycle next to her.
Gao Yuan'ai had a deep misunderstanding of Chen Yongqiang before, but things have improved recently because she often goes to his house to watch the news.
"No need, I can walk there myself."
"Anyway, it's on the way. It's so cold, you'll have to walk for a long time," Chen Yongqiang said, showing his kind heart.
Gao Yuanyuan hesitated for a moment. The journey from the village to the town was not easy.
She glanced at Chen Yongqiang's bicycle parked beside her and didn't insist any further: "Then... thank you for your trouble."
Only after Gao Yuanyuan sat sideways on the back of the bicycle did he start pedaling again.
The two were silent for a moment, with only the sound of the wind whistling in their ears.
"Going to town on business?" Chen Yongqiang asked, breaking the silence.
"Yes, I'd like to borrow a few books from Xinhua Bookstore," Gao Yuanyuan's voice came from behind him.
"Teacher Gao, are you preparing for the self-study exam?" Chen Yongqiang asked.
"How did you know?" Gao Yuanyuan was a little surprised; she hadn't told anyone about this.
"Every time you watch TV, you're recording news about this kind of thing," Chen Yongqiang explained.
"I do have that idea," Gao Yuanyuan said without denying it.
She never expected that this seemingly carefree villager would have such keen observation skills.
Chen Yongqiang looked at the road ahead covered with a thin layer of snow. "Teaching during the day and studying at night, it's not easy."
"There's no other way. If you want to move forward, you always have to put in more effort," Gao Yuanyuan said softly.
"That makes sense. What are you planning to study?" Chen Yongqiang agreed. The saying "knowledge changes destiny" is ingrained in the bones of many students.
"It's related to education, but we're still looking at the specific direction," Gao Yuanyuan answered cautiously, as everything was still in its initial stages.
"That's good." Chen Yongqiang didn't press further.
He could sense the seriousness of the person behind him, and asking too many questions would seem abrupt.
As they spoke, the outline of the town came into view ahead. Snow covered the low rooftops, and wisps of smoke rose straight up in the crisp, cold air.
Chen Yongqiang slowed down and suggested, "Shall I drop you off at the bookstore first?"
"Okay, thank you, Brother Chen." Gao Yuanyuan's thanks came much more naturally this time.
"Don't mention it, it's just on my way."
The bicycle stopped in front of the Xinhua Bookstore in town. Gao Yuanyuan got off the back seat and straightened her scarf.
"I'll go to the bookstore now."
"Okay, I'll buy some things at the supply and marketing cooperative and come pick you up later," Chen Yongqiang told her about his itinerary.
"Okay," Gao Yuanyuan replied, turning and walking towards the bookstore.
Chen Yongqiang watched her walk away before he started pedaling again and turned to the other side.
Upon arriving at the supply and marketing cooperative, he first went to the counter and bought two boxes of shotgun ammunition. This was an old habit; it never hurts to have some on hand.
After paying, Chen Yongqiang looked up and noticed that there were new items on the shelf against the wall.
Next to several hunting rifles hung a dark green binoculars in a leather case.
He leaned closer to the glass counter, pointed to the wall, and asked, "Comrade, how much is that telescope?"
Upon hearing this, the middle-aged saleswoman behind the counter looked up and said, "Those are newly arrived, military standard, sixty yuan."
"Sixty?" Chen Yongqiang considered it for a moment.
This price isn't cheap; it could buy quite a few good fishing lines.
He rarely used this thing, but for some reason, looking at those dark green binoculars made him feel a little itchy. It seemed like it could come in handy for hunting and watching the forest.
"Could you take it down and let me see?"
Seeing his genuine interest, the saleswoman tiptoed to take the binoculars off the hook and handed them to him across the counter, saying, "Be careful, it's a delicate object."
Chen Yongqiang took it; it felt heavy and had a high-quality feel.
He took out his binoculars and, mimicking what he had seen during militia training, brought them close to his eyes and adjusted the knob in the middle.
The telescope was pointed at the brick wall opposite the supply and marketing cooperative, and the view was initially blurry.
As he turned the knob, the gaps between the bricks and the details of the withered grass came closer to his eyes.
Chen Yongqiang moved the lens barrel, and on the bare branches of a tree in the distance, the feathers of several sparrows with their necks tucked in were clearly visible.
"How about that, clear now? It comes from a legitimate military factory," the salesperson explained from the side.
Chen Yongqiang put down the binoculars, his desire to buy it growing stronger.
Sixty dollars is a large sum, but I came here today to spend money to upgrade my equipment.
"Okay, I'll take it. Including the bullets from earlier, issue the ticket together."
After buying the binoculars, his initial hesitation due to the price was quickly replaced by a sense of satisfaction at owning a high-end item.
He put the binoculars back in their case, slung them over his shoulder, and then began to carefully select his main targets for the day: fishing lines and hooks.
Unsurprisingly, the supply and marketing cooperative had a pitifully small variety of fishing gear, with only a few of the most common models displayed in a glass cabinet.
Chen Yongqiang leaned over and pointed to the largest hook, asking, "Comrade, do you have any stronger line than this? And a bigger hook too?"
The sales clerk behind the counter was busy checking accounts on an abacus: "This is already the thickest line, it has a strong tensile strength, it can easily catch fish weighing twenty or thirty pounds."
Chen Yongqiang shook his head, "I need a line that can catch fish weighing over 100 pounds, and the hook has to be big and strong enough."
"Over a hundred pounds?" The sales clerk looked Chen Yongqiang up and down, a hint of amusement on her face.
"Comrade, where in our reservoir or river can you find fish that big? This line is enough."
Chen Yongqiang knew that further discussion was pointless; it was indeed difficult for ordinary people to imagine that such a huge object was hidden at the bottom of the reservoir.
He didn't argue further, but he was somewhat disappointed. It seemed unlikely that he could get his hands on that taimen using the supply and marketing cooperative's usual supplies.
"Give me two rolls of the thickest kind. And the hooks should be the biggest too, a few more." He compromised, pointing to the samples on the counter.
Something is better than nothing; at least these are better than what he's using now.
When Chen Yongqiang was about to pay, he saw a bundle of red nylon rope.
"Comrade, how much is this nylon rope?" Chen Yongqiang pointed to the bundle of rope in the corner.
He often saw this rope in the village; it was mostly used for drying clothes.
He reached out and tugged at it hard; it felt tough and seemed to have good pulling power.
The sales clerk glanced in the direction he was pointing and said, "That nylon rope, it's charged by the meter, 15 cents a meter. How many meters do you want?"
