Chapter 76 Security Work
Chapter 76 Security Work
"Now I finally understand why you said you couldn't solve everything," Sieg said honestly.
"Nonsense, they could drown me with their spittle." Zhang Ailun swallowed hard.
Instead of immediately vying for a spot with the homeless people crammed into the shelter, the two kept their distance. Zhang Ailun looked at the photos on his phone and then at the dense crowd, unable to recognize anyone.
All these black guys look the same! And there are so many of them, it's impossible to tell them apart. It's also possible that they haven't arrived here yet.
Zhang Ailun took out his phone and sent a message to Reina.
A short while later, they saw the other person appear on the second-floor balcony, wave to the two of them, and point to the alley behind the door. Zhang Ailun understood and immediately led Sieg to go around to the alley.
Reina knocked on the back door in the alley, opened it from the inside, glanced at the empty alley outside, and immediately invited the two people in.
This was the first time Zhang Ailun had ever used Reina's connections.
Last time I entered through the front door, and it was truly a hidden gem.
"There are just too many homeless people outside, and we're all a bit overwhelmed. Thank goodness for you all. Thank you so much for coming to help me, Allen!" Reina gave Zhang Allen a warm hug.
Sig opened his arms, waiting for her to hug him, but Rena simply tossed him a loaf of bread from the table. "Fill your stomach first, then you'll have the energy to work!"
This is discriminatory treatment.
Sieg looked resentful, but he still dutifully started munching on the bread, finding it quite tasty.
He exclaimed, "It would be even better if there were water!"
You really don't consider yourself an outsider, Sieg.
"I'm sorry, the bottled water ran out yesterday, and the shelter's storeroom is almost empty! All that's left are drinks and food for the homeless, and a small box of milk reserved for the staff."
Reina smiled, turned around and took out two pairs of light blue overalls and a hat from the dressing room. The baseball cap had the shelter's logo on it, and each person received a carton of milk to replenish their nutrition.
"But since you're here, wearing these uniforms means you'll be our part-time workers! You'll be responsible for helping to maintain order and doing odd jobs."
"Ms. Reina, we're just here to help you, not for any reward," Sieg corrected.
"But I also have to find a legitimate reason to keep you two here. I have to pay you some hourly wage and give you some compensation, right?" Reina retorted, then turned around and said, "Hurry up and change into your work clothes, boys. I'll give you two minutes of personal space."
The two were left staring at each other in bewilderment.
"Boss, you brought me here just to work?" Sig was a little speechless.
"Don't say that, Sieg. We're just waiting for the rabbit to come to us. To ensure our friends' safety, we're waiting for that mental patient to come to us, and we can make some money on the side. Why not?" Zhang Ailun didn't mind at all. He changed into blue overalls and put on a hat. He looked in the mirror and looked quite energetic!
"You're right." Sieg didn't say anything more. Of course, it was good to have money, at least more than collecting cans. Under normal circumstances, it would be difficult for him to find a proper job.
Is this also part of your plan?
After breakfast, the two changed their clothes and went out to the staff lobby on the second floor. Reina was talking with her colleagues, discussing and arranging the work for the next day, and there was also a white supervisor.
"Manager, these are my friends. They heard we were short-staffed and volunteered to help us," Reina explained briefly.
"Of course I trust the people you know. I hope everyone can calm the emotions of those homeless people and prevent large-scale riots and conflicts," the supervisor said earnestly, as he was also frightened by the shooting incident in Sixth Street.
I never expected that when I woke up, the homeless riot was trending on local social media. It happened right next door.
Many people died.
Look how scary this is!
Fortunately, the homeless people in our Fifth District are easier to manage.
He smiled and extended his hand, "Hello, my name is Cooper, and I'm the director of this shelter."
"Hello, my name is Hamburger. This is my friend Sig Comprey, an excellent veteran. Feel free to ask him to handle any problems you have!" Zhang Ailun shook hands with him, making no further attempt to introduce his own abilities.
Without education, certificates, or identity, he would rather be a slacker if it weren't necessary.
"Mr. Comprey, I feel like I've seen you somewhere before." Cooper looked at Sieg and felt that he looked familiar.
"I was in front of the media just yesterday and even received a Good Citizen badge from the Southern Precinct." Sieg confidently displayed his credentials and the gleaming gold medal, giving a respectful salute. "I was a Marine Corps captain when I retired. I'll obey your orders, sir!"
Cooper immediately felt pleased and his attitude improved considerably. He warmly greeted them, saying, "So you're a veteran, that makes things easier! I was a little skeptical about whether you could handle this. Actually, I had already notified the security company and the police station in advance and made the necessary arrangements. They agreed to send people to maintain order, but it's clear that the police station doesn't have many available personnel and will have to transfer people from other branches, which will take time. The security company is only after money; their rates are very high even for just one day, and we haven't reached an agreement yet."
"Sig, the task of maintaining order today is assigned to you. You will serve as the security captain of our shelter." Cooper recognized Sig's abilities and immediately assigned him a formal job, no longer requiring him to do odd jobs, but to be specifically responsible for security work.
It's fine as long as it's usable; as long as the homeless outside are well-fed and watered, they are unlikely to cause any unrest.
Wouldn't this save them another sum of money on hiring a security company? Cooper calculated in his mind.
Sieg had no idea what he was thinking. He assumed the job was easy and just a side job, since the security company was far more professional than them. He readily agreed, "Leave it to me, sir!"
"Very well, I'll pay you $40 an hour! Your friend, Hamburg? I'll pay him $35 an hour!" Cooper said, but he basically ignored Zhang Ailun. After all, in his view, Zhang Ailun was just a companion, and the main thing was Sieg's personal ability.
Zhang Ailun didn't seem to have any particular feelings about it, only thinking that bringing Sigra over was indeed the right idea. Otherwise, how could he possibly earn $35 an hour?
Here, maintaining order and standing guard for 8 hours a day while slacking off can easily earn you $280.
"Rena, take them to the security room to get their equipment. If necessary, you can fire your guns inside. But try not to fire, so as not to cause a bigger disturbance!" Cooper assigned Rena another task.
As a public welfare organization under the municipal government, how come working here isn't considered a half-permanent position?
There are usually security personnel on duty, and they are equipped with legal gun licenses and self-defense weapons, but they are basically not needed, and the positions are often vacant.
Police officers are patrolling the streets, and the homeless people only come here because they want to eat. If the place where they eat is destroyed, they will definitely go hungry in the future!
But things are different now. Those homeless people are starving on the streets and getting soaked in the rain, which makes their already poor families even worse off. Without electricity and water, the shelters can't handle them in time, which will definitely cause unrest! A slight mistake could cause huge economic losses.
