Chapter 97 He Came Back to Life
Chapter 97 He Came Back to Life
Inside the ambulance, everyone stared at Ian in astonishment.
What's going on?
How did the bullet come out by itself?
After a while, the doctor finally realized what was happening and exclaimed, "That's fantastic! However, we still need a waiver of liability to continue treatment."
Lena nodded repeatedly: "I will sign."
Everything that could and should be done has been done; now all that's left is to wait.
Time dragged on endlessly; with every second that passed, Gaskell drew one step closer to death.
Ian and Lena were both in agony, but the siren of the ambulance seemed to have no end.
Almost twenty minutes have passed, and they still haven't arrived at the hospital.
Ian couldn't help but ask, "Where are we going?"
One doctor replied, "Bernard Private Hospital."
Ian frowned. "Shouldn't Feather Holy Cross Hospital be closer? And that hospital is better at treating gunshot wounds."
The doctor paused for a moment, then said, "There's a traffic jam in that direction."
"Is that so?" Ian muttered softly.
As a seasoned, top-notch paparazzi, Ian could easily tell that the doctor's response was problematic.
He felt guilty!
But he didn't say anything, he just waited quietly.
The inner torment and anxiety grew stronger. Ian held the weeping Lena, his eyes fixed on Gaskell.
Finally, after another ten minutes, the ambulance arrived at Bernard Hospital.
Emergency doctors and nurses had already carried Gasker into the hospital, and a fat doctor shouted, "Examine him immediately and see where the bullet is."
Ian held up the deformed bullet and said, "The bullet is out."
The overweight doctor stared at the bullet in astonishment, then said, "We still need to take an X-ray."
Ian said, "You'd better hurry up, you've already wasted too much time on the road."
As Gaskell was taken to the emergency room, Ian and Lena waited anxiously outside.
Pale-faced Lena leaned against Ian, sobbing softly from time to time.
Although she liked Ian, Lena still loved Gaskell, and the thought of her husband possibly leaving her caused her a pang of pain.
Two hours later, the fat doctor finally came out of the emergency room.
He removed his mask and said, "He's doing well. The bullet missed the vital area, and its kinetic energy was insufficient. The hard skull weakened its impact, preventing significant internal damage. His only problem was removing the bullet, but for some reason, it fell out on its own. With some rest, he'll recover, but we're unsure if there will be any long-term effects. He might have suffered nerve damage."
Lena breathed a sigh of relief: "That's wonderful."
"Please come with me to complete the admission procedures," a nurse said softly.
Watching them leave, Ian thought for a moment, then walked aside and dialed a number: "Kreps, it's me. There was a shooting three hours ago... Yes, I need you to find out who did it and why."
This shooting was clearly not directed at Gaskell, nor at Ian.
The old man was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
Kripps quickly replied, "Okay, boss, is there any more?"
Ian thought for a moment and said, "Check again if there's any traffic congestion on the road from Montecito to Fesse Holy Cross Hospital."
"clear."
------
In the hospital room, Ian sat next to Gaskell.
The old man is still in a coma.
Lena held Gaskell's hand and whispered, "I won't tell anyone."
"Huh?" Ian looked at Lena in surprise.
A slight smile appeared on Lena's face: "I know it was you who removed the bullet... although I don't understand how you did it."
Ian looked at her in surprise: "Why would you think that?"
Lena said softly, "Because I know you, Ian. You asked that doctor if it was possible without brain surgery, and the next second you found a bullet."
Ian shook his head slightly: "That was just a coincidence."
Lena smiled: "When you lie, the corners of your eyes roll upwards, and now I know it."
Ian: "..."
Lena continued to look at her husband, and said softly, "I understand your hesitation, and I won't tell anyone. If you don't want me to know, I can believe that the bullet fell out by itself; miracles always happen, right?"
Ian smiled.
He kissed Lena gently and said, "That is indeed the best answer."
Lena replied softly, "But I'm not sure if I'll tell Gaskell... I'm not used to deceiving him."
Ian: "..."
After thinking for a moment, he smiled and said, "You can try saying that I brought a magnet and that it will be attracted out."
The latest novel is first published here!
Lena rolled her eyes. "Sounds pretty good. Hopefully he'll be stupid enough to believe it."
"How about a miracle of life?" Ian asked.
Lena smiled.
She hugged Ian and gave him a sweet, passionate kiss.
Just then, a commotion arose outside the ward.
As Ian stepped out of the ward, he saw several reporters rushing towards him, some even intending to storm into the ward to take pictures.
Ian grabbed the man and yelled, "Get out of here, you bloodsucking, damned reporters! The patient is still unconscious, don't disturb him!"
The reporter looked at Ian in surprise: "Ian Carl? Oh, f***ing! Why you again? You always manage to beat everyone else to it!"
Several reporters left, wailing in pain.
With Ian Carl around, there's no way they'll get any exclusive coverage.
Lena came out of the ward and looked at Ian with concern: "Will you report this?"
Ian hugged Lena and gently kissed her cheek: "Of course not, baby."
………………
At dusk, Ian received a message from Kripps.
The shooting was carried out by MS13. Apparently, it was because of a dispute over a transaction, and these audacious guys actually rushed to Monticino to kill people.
Keep in mind that this is an affluent area, and the police provide excellent protection.
Gangs can sometimes be just that lawless.
As for the route from Montecito to Fesse Holy Cross Hospital, Kripps confirmed that there was no traffic congestion.
Ian remained silent for a long time after receiving this answer.
He asked, "Why does the ambulance take a longer route? Kripps, can you tell me the answer?"
Kripps laughed heartily: "I do know that. You know that health insurance pays out far more to the living than to the dead, right? After all, only the living generate a continuous stream of medical expenses. And emergency care is sometimes a race against time, so insurance companies sometimes pay ambulances to take longer routes to delay treatment and increase the mortality rate."
"Wow," Ian whistled.
Then he said, "Drown those bastards in the ambulance, but before that, I want evidence that they were bribed by the insurance company."
He doesn't need to do this himself; he can leave it to Kreps.
"Okay, boss," Kreps readily agreed.
