Chapter 28: A Child Tears Apart Zombies in the Apocalypse (28)

"By the way, Mumu, could you give the remaining century egg and lean pork congee to Ningbao's new friend?"

Ning Bao suddenly looked up from the book.

Mumu's first reaction to this was that Ningbao was starting to daydream again.

There's nothing I can do; Ningbao is a repeat offender. Every time she tries to read, she wants to go to the bathroom, eat something, or do anything else—she just doesn't want to read. And it's the same when she's doing her homework.

My second reaction was, where did Ningbao get this new friend?

The third reaction was to give a new friend rice gruel that wasn't even left over—this kind of friendship…

Despite the many thoughts that flashed through Mu Mu's mind, only a few seconds passed. She looked at the pot where only a small amount of rice water remained, and couldn't understand why Ning Bao and Li Qinglan were so "conservative" of food, unwilling to waste even a little rice water. There really wasn't much rice left!

"Ningbao, who is your new friend?"

Mumu was already considering whether to bake another dessert. Although she felt that Ningbao seemed to be with them the whole time and shouldn't have had time to meet any "new friends," she wondered, since they already had a system like Bai Gao, what if it was some kind of special being?

"There."

Without a word, Ningbao stood up and ran towards a corner of the ruins. Watching Ningbao's cheerful little figure, Mumu strongly suspected that she simply didn't want to read.

Under normal circumstances, Mumu wouldn't force Ningbao to know a certain amount of knowledge by the age of four or five, but she just won't grow up! Ningbao has always been like this, never wanting to learn, but she can't stay ignorant forever, can she?

Thinking this, Mumu still followed Ningbao. Although she suspected Ningbao was trying to slack off, Ningbao probably wouldn't lie.

"Look, this is Mumu, the super, super good Mumu."

Because Ningbao ran, she arrived a little earlier than Mumu, who walks normally, and is now muttering to herself in the corner as she introduces herself.

When she saw Mumu arrive, she tugged at Mumu's sleeve:

"Mumu, look, this is Ning Bao's new friend."

Mumu looked around carefully, but apart from this corner of the wall that hadn't completely collapsed, there was nothing there.

"Ningbao, do you think this friend of yours is someone a normal person could see?"

Mumu suspected it might be something Ningbao could see, but she couldn't. Of course, it was also possible that Ningbao wasn't a friend in the conventional sense, like how Ningbao had once considered a toy bear a friend. So she followed up with another question:

"Is your friend alive? Can he/she communicate with me?"

"Can't Mumu see?"

Ningbao pointed anxiously to the corner with her chubby little finger:

"She's right here. She can talk, can't Mumu hear her?"

Mumu shook her head. Ningbao started anxiously spinning in circles, her little hands unconsciously running through her hair, muttering to herself:

"How could this be? How could this be? We shouldn't be able to see it..."

"Ningbao, what kind of species is your friend?"

Mumu held down the spinning little Ningbao and asked again.

"Yes...yes..."

Ning Bao looked completely bewildered, and after asking for a long time, she still couldn't come up with anything:

"What are you?"

But kids are so direct; if they didn't know, they could have just asked.

"Mumu, she said her name is Xixi."

Mumu, who heard nothing: ...

Although...but...it seems she asked what race this friend is, rather than what name this friend is, right?

Never mind, she doesn't understand the world of children, nor does she understand their comprehension; there might be a generation gap.

"Wait a moment, I'll go and call Sister Qinglan over."

Li Qinglan continued her slow, persistent walk, trying to digest her food as soon as possible. She couldn't help it; she was just too full. All self-control was utterly useless in the face of Mu Mu's delicious noodles!

"Ah, my invisible friend?"

After hearing Mu Mu's description, Li Qinglan felt that Ning Bao had either gone mad or seen a ghost. Of course, given that Ning Bao is a child and her thought process sometimes differs from adults, it's also possible that it's simply a generation gap.

But who cares? There's no harm in going to take a look.

"Ningbao, can you talk to her again?"

"OK."

Ningbao nodded vigorously:

"Xixi, can Ningbao talk to you?"

She said yes.

The child happily turned to tell Mumu.

A flawless version after careful inspection!

Mu Mu fell silent again, so she and Ning Bao really did have a generation gap, right?

"Big sister, did you hear something?"

Mumu ultimately decided to communicate with Li Qinglan, who was already an adult.

"no."

Li Qinglan was momentarily dazed, but quickly came to her senses. Xi Xi wasn't a particularly special name; on the contrary, it was a very common name, so it was normal to have the same name as someone else.

"Xixi, shall we continue talking?"

Ningbao looked at Mumu, then at Li Qinglan, and tried her best to squat down with her chubby little body. She really tried! Although the bandage on her leg had been removed, it was cold now, and Ningbao was dressed very warmly. It was super difficult for her short legs to squat down, and she would easily plop down on her bottom.

Ning Bao adjusted her posture several times before finally managing to complete the action, and then continued to talk to the unknown creature in the corner.

This scene brought Mu Mu great comfort. It seemed that Ning Bao truly understood what she meant; the generation gap wasn't as big as she had imagined.

Then she looked at Li Qinglan.

Under the expectant gazes of her two little ones, Li Qinglan strained her ears, her expression growing increasingly serious. Mumu and Ningbao's anticipation also intensified.

"Did you hear that?"

Ningbao was the one asking the question; she was so tired from squatting. But she couldn't just sit down on the ground—it was dirty. If she sat on it, her pants would get all dirty, and Mumu would have to wash them.

Li Qinglan wore a very serious face, unconsciously exuding the pressure of a superior. After a long while, she finally uttered two words:

"no."

Ningbao struggled to stand up, supporting herself on her knees with her little hands. She blinked her big, watery eyes and kept looking at Li Qinglan.

Li Qinglan also felt this was a bit unreasonable, so she turned her head away, avoiding looking into the two children's clear eyes. She had a nagging feeling that her status as the strongest human ability user was fake; how could she not hear something that even a small child could hear?

Oh, Mumu can't hear it either.

To have survived this long in the apocalypse, Li Qinglan must have had a pretty good mindset; after all, if she had a bad mindset, she'd either die or go insane. So, she found a suitable reason for herself in less than half a minute.

Sigh, what's with making excuses? This is a positive and optimistic attitude towards life.
