Chapter 8 Servant
Chapter 8 The Servant (Part Two)
Lynn went downstairs, pushed open the wooden door, and walked into the yard.
Lynn felt somewhat dazed as she stepped out of the house where she had stayed for three months for the first time.
Only the smell of blood and the acrid stench of acid corrosion in the air reminded him of the reality of it all.
"Stand up," Lynn said to the lizardman.
The lizardman heard what Anglie had said to Lynn earlier, and got up and walked over respectfully.
Lynn only truly felt the lizardman's height after he stood up. Looking up, he realized the lizardman was probably over two meters tall.
It had a charred mark on its chest, covered with black powder and smelling strongly of gunpowder, probably from the gunshot wound it had just received.
"Master," the lizardman said respectfully. His hearing had been enhanced, and although they were in the courtyard, he had heard clearly what Anglie and Lynn had just said.
Lynn stared intently at Lauren, and decided that the best way to win people's hearts was to use both kindness and severity, and to win them over through a combination of fear and respect.
The control spell can only be considered a form of power; it can only instill fear and dread in Lauren from the bottom of her heart.
But it doesn't make people obedient.
Lauren's reaction was rather strange. After being released, he ran back on his own. Didn't he miss his wife? Why didn't he go to find her when he had the chance to escape?
"Why didn't you run away just now?" Lynn asked.
"Master, where can I escape to in my current state?" Lauren said with a wry smile.
"Master Anglie promised me that as long as I cooperate with him in the follow-up experiments and examinations, he will give my wife a sum of money," Lauren said in awe.
"Besides, Master is a noble wizard. Master, I can do things. I used to be a baker, but I developed a serious lung disease from baking bread for so long, and I coughed frequently. Now I feel much better." Lauren glanced at Lynn and said cautiously. "If Master would like, I can even bake bread for you."
It turns out that Lauren's previous profession was a baker.
Lynn glanced at him again. Being a baker sounded like a good job, but it was actually a very tough one. Lynn's uncle was a baker, and he also suffered from asthma and eczema. Moreover, he didn't live a very wealthy life; it was a hard and tiring job.
Because bread doesn't make much profit and it hardens easily, only warm bread is soft, Lynn's uncle had to work late into the night and spend most of his time in the dusty bakery in order to sell bread better, just so that people could come to the store to buy a loaf of bread every morning when they left.
Lynn understood Lauren's meaning. He had become what he was now, and the outside human world could no longer accommodate him, so he followed Anglie to seek his protection.
"Alright, you help me clean up these things on the ground first," Lynn said.
Judging from their attire, these people should be the sheriffs of a town not far from the foot of the mountain.
Everyone was dressed in the same imperial-style leather armor and carried a musket.
Lynn picked up a perfectly intact musket.
The musket was about 1.5 meters long and weighed 5 kilograms. Judging from its structure, it was a percussion flintlock musket.
Although this musket was very outdated compared to later firearms, it was still capable of hitting a vital spot and killing a person with a single shot at close range of tens of meters.
The only drawback is the accuracy. It's fine at close range, but at a slightly longer distance, the accuracy of this flintlock pistol is basically a matter of luck.
Lynn collected all the flintlock guns on the ground; these guns could fetch a good price if sold.
Although the kingdom officially prohibits the trade in firearms, there is still a considerable market for them on the black market.
Especially now that the situation is turbulent, some wealthy people are not stingy with spending money to arm themselves.
These flintlock muskets are hard currency, and Lynn doesn't mind carrying two flintlock muskets for self-defense.
Lynn searched the corpse again and found more than a dozen deerskin pouches. These pouches were small and had been worn by their owner around their waist.
I gently padded it, and something inside was shaking.
Open the deerskin bag, and you'll find paper cartridges wrapped in oiled paper.
Lynn opened a paper cartridge and looked inside; it contained gunpowder and lead pellets.
"Master." Lauren handed Lynn a small brown bag.
Lynn took it, and as she shook it, the contents of the bag made a crisp, pleasant sound.
Upon opening the bag, one finds some gleaming silver coins and a varying number of copper coins.
The silver coins are generally of a regular design, and in the very center of the coin is the figure of a woman with her arms crossed in front of her.
Lynn looked up and his face bore a striking resemblance to the figure on the moon in the sky.
Lynn emptied everything out and surprisingly found a gold coin inside.
The kingdom has minted many coins over the years.
Basically, every king would mint gold coins with his own portrait after taking office.
Depending on the national strength at the time, the gold content of gold coins varied from generation to generation, and some places also privately minted gold coins, which resulted in varying values of gold coins.
There are different exchange rates between different versions of gold and silver coins in circulation.
On the contrary, silver coins are the most widely circulated and have the most stable value because the minting standards of silver coins circulating in the market are basically uniform.
However, there was a joke in the kingdom before: a notoriously stingy marquis family secretly ran a mint that produced silver coins with a seriously insufficient silver content, causing the coins to turn black.
He then tried to trade these blackened silver coins with other nobles, but naturally, he failed.
The marquis then came up with a clever idea: he used these blackened silver coins as wages to pay his knights and subjects.
This caused quite a stir, and it is said that during a hunting trip, the marquis accidentally fell from his horse and became paralyzed on one side. Not long after returning home, he passed on his title to his son and then died.
After the new marquis took office, he quickly reissued the salary, and all the black coins that had been distributed before were recalled and reminted.
This is why a strange tacit understanding exists between the various noble families and the royal family.
This ensured the stability of the silver coin currency.
However, there were too many guns; he simply couldn't carry them all.
It would be great if we could use a spatial item to put the gun inside.
"Will you come with me to town?" Lynn said.
"But you can't look like this right now, you need to cover it up a bit." Lynn thought for a moment, then let Lauren follow him into the house to tear down the curtains in one of the rooms.
The curtains were old, covered in dust, and had holes in them from insects.
Lauren draped the large curtains over herself, concealing her body.
Two holes, one large and one small, were located right near the eyes. Lauren followed behind Lynn, looking like a cloaked ghost in the night.
The town is located not far from the foot of the mountain. There are shadowy figures in a few houses on the edge of the town. The gunshots not long ago have startled the residents inside.
From a distance, it looks like a medieval European-style town nestled in the mountains, with many buildings made of wood and stone, and scattered wooden huts.
The ground was paved with uneven bluestone slabs, but many places were damaged and weeds were growing in the cracks.
In the center of the town, the outline of a small castle can be vaguely seen, which should be the residence of the town's nobles.
As they got closer, Lynn could smell the odor of cow and horse manure wafting over.
Lynn walked through the town, knowing exactly where to go if he wanted to rent a carriage or sell a musket.
Following the sound, on a street on the south side of the town, light shone through the windows of a large building, and above the building's entrance, a huge carriage and a red leaf sign were very eye-catching.
As Lynn stepped forward, she looked up and saw the sign of the shop, which was still open: "Red Leaf Inn."
Hotels are a common sight in the kingdom, found in almost every town or city.
It served as a place for travelers to spend the night, or for gatherings, chats, and drinks; it also housed places for renting horse-drawn carriages and facilitating certain transactions.
Lynn pushed open the wooden door, and a cacophony of noise and an indescribable odor rushed out.
The smells of beer and ale, sweat, various foods, cheap perfume, and the burning of tallow candles on the wall mingled together.
The air in the hotel lobby was stuffy and not very circulating, but it was much warmer than outside.
In the center of the hall was a small stove, and groups of drunkards or travelers sat on wooden tables and stools.
The waiter was cleaning up some of the drunkards' vomit on the floor.
As the wooden door was pushed open, a cold draft rushed in.
Customers who were nearby saw Lynn walk in, and then their gaze shifted to Lauren behind Lynn.
The air in the hotel felt suffocating.
Lauren's attire was really too bizarre, and he was also very tall. Even in a small town, it's extremely rare to find a strong man over two meters tall.
A neatly dressed waiter approached and said, "Hello sir, what would you like to order?"
"Is your boss here?" Lynn asked directly.
"Please wait a moment," the waiter said before returning to relay the message.
A short while later, a tall, thin man with a mustache, who looked to be in his thirties, came down the stairs.
He glanced at Lauren standing behind Lynn, then back at Lynn. "Please come this way."
Follow the wooden stairs to an upstairs room.
The room's window seat
The man spoke up, "What does the guest need?"
"I want to buy a carriage to Bangor Harbor," Lynn said.
Lynn is still wearing the clothes he took with him when he fled. As a hotel owner, he traveled all over the country when he was young and met many people. You can tell a lot from a person's temperament.
However, the strangely dressed, burly man standing behind Lynn, with a curtain-like draped over his body, was somewhat unfathomable to him and gave him a vague sense of danger.
However, he didn't think it was a curtain; he thought it was some kind of clothing with a unique style.
"Our hotel does offer carriage rental services. We are a legitimate hotel under the hotel union and have partnerships with many hotels across the country. However, if guests do not frequently travel by carriage, there is no need to purchase one specifically."
"Although the carriage wasn't very expensive to buy, it was troublesome to maintain. It needed fodder, grains, and coarse salt, and you also needed to hire a coachman. The daily cost of maintaining the carriage was about one silver coin per day," Ted said.
Lynn pondered that if he bought a carriage, he would also need to hire a coachman. Once they arrived at Bangor Port, they probably wouldn't be going anywhere else. Furthermore, the horses would require a stable. Thinking about it carefully, it seemed quite troublesome.
How much does it cost to rent a horse-drawn carriage?
"That depends on which type of carriage the guest wants to rent," Ted said.
"If guests are in a hurry to leave, they can hire a car. If they are not in a hurry, they can wait for a shared ride. Shared rides are charged per person. If there are not many guests, the price of a shared ride is more affordable, while hiring a car is more expensive."
"Charter a car," Lynn said calmly.
Carpooling is too troublesome, and the teacher's identity is too sensitive; carpooling would easily expose them.
He wasn't worried about himself, but rather about the safety of the pedestrians sharing the ride with the teacher.
"There are two types of car rental options. One is where guests prepare their own accommodation and food, which will be cheaper. The other is where our hotel provides an all-inclusive service based on the guests' destination, offering accommodation at hotels along the way."
Both options are charged based on distance traveled. For flat roads, the charge is 8 silver coins per 100 li (approximately 50 kilometers); for mountain roads, it's 12 silver coins per 100 li. If you choose to include food and lodging, there's an additional charge of 1 silver coin per day,” Ted said.
"Don't worry, guests. We have meter drums in our vehicles. If it's a long journey, the drum will be sounded every ten miles. If it's less than ten miles, it's not counted as a distance and is considered a free ride for the guests," Ted said with a smile.
After all, every long-distance trip is a big business opportunity.
Even in this small town, not many people are willing to travel long distances; most people only rent cars for short trips, and only when they are in a hurry.
For many farmers, a long trip can cost them most of their life savings.
Lynn pondered and secretly estimated that it was still about seven or eight hundred miles away from Bangor Port, and he didn't know how many mountain roads and plains there were along the way.
According to Ted's prices, it would cost nearly a hundred silver coins to travel from here to Bangor Port.
One silver coin could be exchanged for twenty copper coins on the market.
Seeing Lynn remain silent, Ted seized the opportunity to add, "Our inn happens to have a carriage right now. If the guests are ready, we can depart at any time."
"Please pick us up on the main road outside town tomorrow morning," Lynn said.
"Where is the guest's destination?" Ted asked.
Bangor Port
"Bangor Port is 760 li from here, and the journey involves crossing the Sagunto Mountains. The guests will need to cover all expenses, including food and lodging, and the trip will take approximately 13 to 15 days, barring any unforeseen circumstances. The price will be 92 silver coins. What do you think, guests?"
"If the customer is a regular, no deposit is needed, but since this is the first time we've met, we need to pay 60% of the deposit in advance."
"I have another business deal to discuss with the boss," Lynn said.
After saying that, Lynn glanced at Lauren behind him.
Lauren, being very sensible, stepped forward and placed the thing she was holding in burlap on the table.
I heard a crisp sound as something inside hit the table.
Ted paused for a moment, then seemed to realize something.
He glanced at Lynn with some surprise.
His eyes flickered slightly.
Ted glanced at the tightly closed door and lifted the burlap sack.
I saw the flintlock pistol on the table.
He glanced at Lynn with some apprehension.
With a flintlock pistol, it wasn't a big deal.
However, being able to produce six fire spears at once is no easy feat.
In this remote town, there are only two places that could produce so many flintlock muskets at once.
One was Baron Badwa, who lived in the town, and the other was the town's sheriff's office.
Of course, it cannot be ruled out that they came from other places specifically to sell him this batch of flintlock muskets.
However, while the fire-breathing gun can fetch a good price on the black market, it is not excessively expensive. This is because the fire-breathing gun is essentially only strictly controlled; in reality, it is not very difficult to manufacture, and the materials required are not particularly scarce.
After all, it was already widely deployed in the military.
"I can buy back a gun for forty silver coins." Seeing that Lynn was not satisfied with the price.
Ted added, "Actually, this price is already very favorable. After all, not everyone can afford this gun, and finding a buyer is a very troublesome thing. If I can't find a buyer, I'll just be stuck with it."
"Okay," Lynn said.
"I'll sell all six of these to you. Use a portion to cover your travel expenses, and settle the rest with me."
Ted nodded. "Please wait a moment, sir."
Ted then got up and left the room.
Lauren looked away as she watched Ted's retreating figure.
"Master, will he tell on us?" Lauren asked in a low voice.
"I don't know, but he certainly won't until he's sure who's behind us," Lynn said.
Merchants are profit-driven, and the smarter a person is, the more they consider things. Before he is sure who is behind him, Ted will not rashly offend anyone.
By the time he found out, he and his teacher had already left.
With enough money, you can go to Bangor Port from anywhere.
Besides, even if we told them, there's no need to be afraid. The town's defenses have been severely weakened, and they don't have the strength to pursue us and our teacher now.
Of course, all of this is based on the premise that the teacher is a powerful wizard.
The teacher told him to find a horse-drawn carriage. Once he found the carriage, he didn't have to worry about the rest of the safety issues.
When the fight breaks out, the teacher will be in front, and you can just shout "666" from behind.
