Chapter 16 Monster
Chapter 16 Monster (Part Two)
The man fell and his head was covered in blood, screaming in agony.
The somewhat noisy tavern suddenly fell silent.
Many eyes were on him.
"There are monsters in the mine. They've eaten so many people! It's terrifying!"
The man who got up from the ground shouted for help.
"They're all dead, all dead. Those monsters were terrifying." The man was in a daze, severely traumatized.
"What happened at the mine?" A group of drunkards gathered around a large table nearby fell silent. Even the people around him, who were not quiet, made him physically quiet as well. A slightly older man with a white beard and an air of authority stood up and asked.
"We were sleeping at night when a snake-like monster suddenly broke in. It was bigger than a cow. Pete had just gotten out of bed when the monster swallowed his head and upper body whole."
"When I ran out, I found that there were many more monsters that looked exactly the same in the mine. If those monsters came to the town, we would be doomed."
"Hahaha, Lal, I think you're having a nightmare. I've been mining for five years and never seen a monster. Besides, with so many of us here, what are we afraid of?" A heavily drunk man stood up, patting his chest, though he swayed unsteadily, his cheeks flushed. "Come on, lead the way. I want to see if my pickaxe is harder than that monster's head!"
monster?
Lynn's expression hardened slightly; this world was indeed unsafe.
I just hope it won't delay my journey tomorrow.
Upon hearing that the monster resembled a snake, Lynn's first thought was of the monster his teacher kept.
If that lizard were seen hastily in the dark, it wouldn't be impossible for it to be mistaken for a snake. That monster eats humans, so it might have secretly gone to feast on it.
But then he heard that there were several more of the same monsters in the open area of the mine, and Lynn knew that his guess was probably wrong.
Unless that lizard monster has several companions.
The drunks in the tavern made a ruckus for a while, and finally a dozen or so miners who were still relatively sober left the tavern. Judging from their tone, they seemed to be heading to the town's church.
The remaining drunkards were put to rest in a large, shared room behind the tavern.
Lynn finished her food, then got up and went upstairs to her room.
Mines outside the town.
A row of bungalows was built outside the mine for the miners to live in, but at this moment the area outside the bungalows is in chaos.
A large number of people scattered and fled, while in the open space, the moonlight shone dimly, and a strange creature about three meters long, silver-gray in color, resembling an earthworm or a snake, stood in place, its silver-gray head swaying from side to side.
It seems to be trying to discern the smells in the air.
After a moment, seemingly having determined its direction, the monster burrowed directly into the ground. The solid ground felt like soft mud, and the monster easily disappeared into the earth.
On a high ground not far away, a tall figure, seemingly draped in a cloak, looked down at the scene below.
"That was terrifying." Lauren was still shaken; a monster had actually appeared here.
He and the giant lizard followed behind their master's carriage, not daring to appear openly on the main road during the day, but only following their master's trail through the forests on both sides of the road.
Anyway, this giant lizard has a keen sense of smell, so all I have to do is follow behind it.
As soon as they arrived in town, the giant lizard led them here.
Upon arrival, they discovered that some monsters had emerged from the mine.
Turning her head to look at the large lizard beside her, its tongue flicking and its eyes gleaming, Lauren looked down again.
"You're not going to go down there, are you? Wouldn't that expose you to the eyes of those ordinary people? I won't make a move without my master's orders. You're crazy. What if you can't win?" Lauren shook her head frantically.
But the next moment, Lauren's words caught in her throat.
Before he could finish speaking, the giant lizard beside him had already rushed down the hillside.
The massive body darted swiftly through the rocky terrain, and even with Lauren's keen eyesight, he could only vaguely make out a blurry figure.
Looking into the distance, a miner was running away from the mine at the foot of the mountain. Suddenly, the soil beneath his feet broke open, and the fleeing miner tripped over the churning mud.
The next moment, a huge head emerged from the soil.
With a piercing scream, the lower half of his body was swallowed whole by the monster beneath him.
boom--
Suddenly, a colossal creature charged out from the side, as ruthless and unreasonable as a bulldozer, directly ramming the monster that had emerged from the ground and sending it flying.
Just as the earthworm monster, which had been knocked away, was about to turn around, a ghostly red light appeared in the eyes of the lizard monster that had been rampaging down the mountain.
Upon meeting those eyes, the worm-like monster froze in place, then its head was bitten off in the next moment.
Juice overflows.
This earthworm monster, which even a pickaxe couldn't damage, was as fragile as a piece of paper in front of the lizard monster.
"Sister, I don't want this to happen." The blonde girl sighed softly. "Why does Father want me to go to Bangor Port? I don't want to leave the kingdom."
"Antina, you must understand that the current kingdom is not safe. Only that place is relatively safe. Only when you become a wizard will these mortal conflicts not affect you, and only then will you have the freedom to choose," Dolores said.
"I heard that once you go over there, it's very difficult to come back," Antina said stubbornly, staring into her sister's eyes.
"Who said that? Once you become a full-fledged wizard, you can come back whenever you want," Dolores said. "And it's not just you; I'll go with you there too. You won't be alone."
"Then why have none of our ancestors who went there ever returned?" Antina bit her lip, somewhat puzzled.
"And now there's a plague breaking out in our territory, and the kingdom to the north is invading us—that's war," Antina said. "Why is Father making us leave at this time? Has he encountered some danger and wants us to take refuge?"
Dolores was both amused and exasperated upon hearing this.
My younger sister is really naive.
"If that's the purpose, would Father have so openly and blatantly let you leave the family territory?" Dolores comforted her silly sister.
Antina was taken aback at first, but then realized that her sister's words made sense.
If it were truly something shameful, he wouldn't have openly allowed Uncle Dempsey to lead a group of knights to follow him.
Uncle Dempsey is a renowned knight in the northern part of the kingdom.
His father’s Duchy of Azaleas had hundreds of knights, and among them, Uncle Demps stood out from the rest, being one of the three great knights of the duchy and known as the Storm Knight.
She had heard that Uncle Demps had once led a ten-man knight squad to defeat thousands of bandits in a direct confrontation.
In the next room, Dempsey, holding a sword, stood behind the door, pressed against it.
The hotel corridors have wooden floors, making footsteps particularly clear.
The footsteps in the corridor sounded deliberately muffled and low, and they gave him an inexplicable sense of strangeness, as if they didn't sound human.
The person whose footsteps were walking was clearly not light; the sound of their footsteps on the floor was particularly dull, and there was also a faint dragging sound behind them, as if the person was dragging something along the narrow corridor.
Dempsey conjured up an image in his mind: a tall, muscular man with a slow gait, dragging a heavy load down the corridor.
Dempsey's thick eyebrows were furrowed, and his body was tense, like a sword poised to strike.
The young lady's room is right next door. If the owner of the footsteps stops at the door of the young lady's room, he will break down the door as quickly as possible and slash out with the sword in his hand.
The layout of the hotel corridor flashed through his mind. If he rushed out, at what angle should he thrust his sword? If his opponent dodged, what move should he use next?
At that moment in the corridor, Lauren turned her head and looked at the wall beside her with some curiosity.
Since becoming a lizardman, he has found that his hearing has become very sensitive. He can hear the women's moans, the men's panting, the old men's coughs, and even the very faint breathing behind the wall next door in the hotel.
Is someone hiding behind the wall?
Lauren scratched her head.
Doubtful.
