Chapter 18 Unyielding Spirit
Chapter 18 Unyielding Spirit
Sarah's heart tightened suddenly.
She habitually pressed the switch for the living room light by the door.
"Snapped!"
There was no response; the light was broken again.
The voltage in this run-down apartment is unstable, and electrical appliances often break down.
Just as her gaze was focused on the figure behind the curtains, the streetlights outside flickered incessantly, and it felt as if the shadows of the furniture in the room, bathed in intermittent light, suddenly lengthened.
The light from the streetlights flickered incessantly. The next second, the streetlights seemed unable to hold on any longer, letting out a crackling electronic wail. Immediately, most of the light in Sarah's house disappeared, leaving only the night breeze blowing in through the open window, lifting the curtains.
At 2 a.m., on the edge of Gotham City's Upper East Side, where there might still be bright lights elsewhere, this neighborhood, which straddles the line between the slums and the bustling city, is pitch black and quiet. Even the windows seem to have turned into the mouths of a ferocious beast ready to devour its prey.
Sarah's soft call went unanswered, so she was certain that the person behind the curtains was not a figment of her imagination.
"Whoosh—"
The other person's breathing was heavy and hoarse, which stirred Sarah's fear of the unknown and her terrifying imagination about the indescribable. A chill ran from Sarah's tailbone to the back of her head, raising goosebumps all over her body. She didn't need to look in a mirror to know that her face had turned pale with fright.
The only thing that kept her from turning and running away was the silhouette of that body that was so similar to hers.
Without approaching, she slightly bent her knees, preparing to leap backward through the doorway behind her, and called out softly again, "Dina, is that you?"
This time, the other party finally responded.
"Sarah..."
The voice was both familiar and unfamiliar; it didn't sound like a response, but rather like a desperate scream.
That's not my sister's voice!
It sounds more like... Sarah's own voice?
Sarah didn't blink, secretly switching her handbag to her left hand, and with her right hand she touched the T-shaped stick that she always hung behind the door.
In this dilapidated apartment, she encountered more than once a crazy homeless man who would get drunk in the middle of the night and knock on every door.
Sarah's heart pounded wildly; the tension caused her blood to rush through her veins. She tried to calm herself and widened her eyes.
As luck would have it, at that very moment, not only did a gust of wind blow into the room, lifting the curtains, but also, incredibly coincidentally, moonlight peeked out from behind the clouds.
By the fairly bright moonlight, Sarah finally saw the 'person'.
Do not!
She can no longer be considered a person.
Ignoring her pale, bloodless face, Sarah's attention was completely drawn to the right half of her face, which was rotting away.
What a terrifying face it was!
The skin was completely gone, revealing dry, dead fish-like eyes, blackened cheek muscles, and disgusting gums with several broken teeth.
Her left chest was completely rotten, revealing a terrible cavity, and you could even vaguely see the light and shadow behind her body through her body.
Zombies!?
The most outrageous thing is that this female zombie, with that half intact face, is actually Sarah Lance's!
"Ah—" Even with considerable martial arts skills, and even though she lives in Gotham City every day, which is full of violence and death, Sarah in this life is ultimately just an ordinary person.
The terrifying face immediately triggered her stress response. With a powerful kick of her left foot, she sent a round stool that was facing the main entrance flying, hurtling towards the attacker.
The flying stool, which was powerful enough to smash an ordinary person's head and draw blood, had just reached the female zombie when the monster suddenly swung its already skeletal left claw and smashed the wooden stool to pieces with a single slap!
A sense of fear instantly filled Sarah's chest.
She could easily imagine that if she didn't do something, the damned zombie would tear her body apart and eat her flesh raw in the next round.
Without even a second's hesitation, Sarah saw the female zombie lunging at her and suddenly yanked, throwing the meter-and-a-half-tall shoe cabinet next to the door out of the way.
"Bang!"
Another blow shattered the shoe cabinet.
The gruesome death of the shoe cabinet bought Sarah a second. Without looking back, she left the house. Instead of heading for the stairs, she leaped towards the window at the end of the corridor, jumping out of the window, which was only about half a meter wide. She landed on the ground from the third floor, adjusting her posture in mid-air and then doing three front flips.
Turn around!
The zombie was unfortunately stuck in the window, her uncoordinated limbs slamming hard against the window frame with a loud bang.
The lights in many rooms of the apartment building came on and then quickly went out.
In the slums of Gotham City, the least reliable person is your neighbor.
No one knows whether any loud noise coming from your room is the result of a terrible domestic violence incident, a bloody purge by a local gang, or a failed arrest by a lousy cop.
In short, they did everything they could to save your life and provided all the support they could offer beyond tangible assistance.
Besides myself, the only people I can rely on are my closest relatives.
Seeing that the zombies wouldn't catch up anytime soon, Sarah ran as fast as she could while taking out her phone to call her sister.
"Answer it! Answer it! Answer the phone now, you damn sis—"
Sarah almost burst into tears.
Of course she knew that her older sister had gone to Dubai to have a good time with that mysterious rich second-generation. Regardless of whether her older sister could rise to a higher social status, just the fact that her older sister had mentioned that Ang might have handled the Black Mask incident made her see her as a lifeline.
Just then, a second loud crash came from behind Sarah. The female zombie had smashed through a window on the third floor of the apartment building and jumped down.
Amidst the exploding wood chips and shards of glass, many were embedded in the female zombie's body, but she remained oblivious, stomping heavily on the ground, even breaking several old sidewalk tiles.
Seeing Sarah already a hundred meters away, the female zombie chased after her with somewhat uncoordinated steps.
Sarah heard the noise, turned around sharply, and found that the monster was relentlessly chasing after her, which made her even more frightened.
Finally, the call was answered.
"Sarah? What a coincidence, I just got off the plane." Diana was stunned by her sister's exclamation as soon as she answered the phone.
"Sister! Help me! There's a zombie that looks just like me chasing me! It knows my name, so it's probably after me."
Sarah's screams came through the Black Canary phone.
Normally, Ang wouldn't care.
As a time traveler, he keenly sensed the immense crisis implied in Sarah Lance's words.
When the black canary saw Ang approaching with a serious expression, it immediately realized something and turned on its loudspeaker.
"Sarah, you're not kidding?"
"What a joke! Fxxk! If you don't come to save me, you'll be collecting your sister's corpse. God! Those are zombies, I might turn into one of those monsters if I get bitten. For Mom's sake, save me!" Sarah screamed.
"Where are you?"
"I was at home just now, and I definitely couldn't wait for the police. I also don't know how to contact Batman. How about I lead that monster to the old place where we used to play hide-and-seek, and you bring your invincible boss over?" Sarah spoke very quickly, interspersed with her panting. In the background, there were sounds of things being destroyed not far away, as well as the occasional eerie growl.
Ang snatched the phone from Black Canary's hand: "This is Ang."
"Boss! Help me! I'll do anything you ask if you can save me!"
"Okay! I'll be there in ten minutes."
"So fast!?" This time, even Sarah was surprised.
After hanging up the phone, Ang's gaze fell on a helicopter that was ready for takeoff not far from the Gulfstream aircraft.
Without saying a word, he led his men straight there.
"I've requisitioned this plane!" Angela opened the cabin door and boarded.
The pilot was stunned, but as a principled, trustworthy, and ethical professional pilot, he said, "I'm sorry, sir, this plane was reserved by Mr. DuPont, you have no right to..."
Before he could finish speaking, Louis, standing next to Ang, alertly opened the chained briefcase in his hand. Ang casually pulled out two stacks of Franklin and threw them at the pilot's face.
"Okay! Boss, where are you going?"
Professional ethics are no match for money!
