Chapter 6 What I'm Best At
Chapter 6 What I'm Best At
Outside, it was pitch black, but inside, the lights were on and laughter filled the air.
After finishing his Monte Cristo sandwich, Harris grabbed a can of beer and tossed it to Martin. He then opened another can with one hand and exclaimed, "Martin, my adoration for you has gone from zero to ninety percent!"
Elena came over with a plate, sat down next to Martin, and forked a piece of oxtail: "This is a reward for you."
Martin took a bite of meat, opened his beer, raised it, and said, "Gentlemen, let's raise a glass!"
"Cheers!"
Lily and Hall, those two idiots, also raised their Cokes.
The afternoon's harvest brought true joy.
The joy was so pure that it spurred Lily and Hall to reach for their beer.
Elena glanced over, and Lily, shrinking back, said, "It wasn't me, it was Hall who grabbed my hand!"
Hall retorted, not to be outdone: "They were clearly encouraging me to take it!"
Martin tapped the empty can: "If you two idiots ruin my good mood again, I'll throw you out to sleep on the streets."
"Since you're treating," Lily said, her straw buzzing as she stopped arguing with Hall.
Martin stood up and said, "Alright, I'll mix you a drink for the girls."
Elena asked in surprise, "When did you learn bartending, you idiot?"
Martin picked up a can of sweet beer, went to the edge of the open kitchen, and said while rummaging through it, "That old bastard Jack is the most talented man in northeast Marietta. What makes you think he could have stolen your mother away?"
Harris quietly circled around behind the sofa and deliberately said to Elena, "There's a 99% chance that Jack's son is a bastard."
Lily, who was standing nearby, overheard this and chimed in, "Scott and Jack are both bastards, and Martin is a bastard too—perfectly inherited!"
With a thud, Elena's fist landed on Lily's face. Lily covered her nose and fell silent.
Since there were no professional ingredients in the kitchen, Martin had to find a few substitutes. There were no bartenders, so he simply took Lily's water bottle that she used to go to school.
Jack Davis is indeed multi-talented, but Martin Davis never learned bartending from him.
This is something Martin learned specifically to secure a supporting role as a bartender when he was playing a supporting character.
Martin was a heavy drinker back then and practiced drinking regularly.
Martin poured in half a bottle of sweet beer, added sugar, salt, cola and baking soda, cracked an egg, added the egg white, squeezed in a little lemon juice, and finally tightened the lid and shook it.
Martin took two cups and placed them on the coffee table piled with food wrappers. He unscrewed the lid of the kettle and poured the contents into the cups: "Foam Beauty, enjoy!"
The wine in the glass was covered in foam.
Elena took a glass and cautiously sipped it: "The taste is a bit strange."
Lily quickly grabbed the other cup, took a deep sniff, and exclaimed, "This is disgusting..."
Martin slapped Lily on the head: "Idiot, keep your mouth shut."
Harris took Lily's glass and enjoyed it alone: "You've learned things we didn't know?"
Martin said, "I'm also good at horseback riding."
Lily couldn't help herself again: "I know..."
When her sharp gaze turned to her, Lily shut her mouth completely.
Martin was a stuntman who could only ride a horse.
Elena finished her bubble tea, then remembered something and handed Martin a packaged disc: "A replica of the video recording."
Harris asked, "Is it still useful?"
Martin put it aside and mumbled, "Even if that good-for-nothing kicks it tomorrow, his drug tests will still be positive for a long time to come."
The others, unaware of what was going on, completely forgot about it and focused on eating and drinking.
After Elena finished eating and drinking, she asked, "You won't run off with the money like that bastard Jack, will you?"
Martin opened another beer: "With so little money, going to a strange place and spending it all will make things even harder than they are now."
This statement is partly true and partly false, because Martin is indeed considering fleeing, but whether or not he will actually do so depends on the situation.
Elena moved her legs onto the sofa: "I'll allow you to pay the rent later. Use it to pay off part of the loan sharks first. I've heard that Vincent, the owner of Wild Beast House, is a tough guy."
She then asked, "Have you considered a new job?"
Martin certainly considered it: "Do what I do best..."
It was getting late, and Harris was tired after a long day, so he dragged Hall back to the room.
Elena got up and tidied up the trash on the floor. With her hand on the coffee table, she bent down with her back to Martin to pick up the napkins Hall had carelessly thrown away.
…………
In the morning, Martin slept alone on the sofa.
The Carter's house wasn't big, with only two bedrooms. Elena and Lily shared one, while Harris and Hall shared the other.
Martin couldn't possibly share a room with Elena and the Lily sisters, so he was too lazy to go back to the next room last night and simply slept on the sofa.
Half asleep and half awake, in a daze, Martin remembered what he was best at.
What is he good at? Acting and related skills, and most importantly, navigating the entertainment industry.
In my past life, when I was young, I was delusional and wanted to be the second "Silly Root," wasting a lot of my best years on it.
Speaking solely of acting, although he came from a self-taught background, he was willing to study hard and endure hardship. After becoming a supporting actor, even some veteran actors who had received formal training in the early days would praise him.
Acting is a field that relies heavily on talent. Martin was quite talented in his past life. However, success or failure in the entertainment industry is not determined by talent or acting skills.
Martin has long lost his naivety and has a sufficient understanding of himself.
Martin Davis, the predecessor of Martin Davis, was almost at the bottom of society, with virtually no connections, negative assets, and had not even completed a happy education.
Martin knew very well that if he wanted to develop in the future, the best way was to work in an industry he was good at.
Hollywood's film and television industry is also tough to navigate. In fact, for poor people, it's difficult to find other jobs besides free shopping or joining a gang as cannon fodder.
Martin's short-term goals became clearer: adapt to American society, learn more about the dynamics of the film and television industry, and earn more money to look for opportunities in Los Angeles or New York.
Atlanta can be considered a starting point, after all, in the previous life, by around 2015, Atlanta had become the third largest film and television production base in the United States, after Los Angeles and New York.
It's mainly about opportunity; often, opportunity is far more important than ability.
