Chapter 107 The Midnight Change

"Da da da".

The old clock hands ticked away with a crisp sound.

"Oh, thank you."

Maya, the woman who first appeared at the door, looked exhausted and forced a smile as she accepted the coffee Zatanna offered.

She held the coffee in her hands, sank into the chair, and gripped the cup tightly with both hands, hoping to use the warmth of the cup to dispel the fear in her heart.

"Tell me about it."

Zatanna sat back down at her desk. As a magician, she naturally had to deal with the mystical things in this world: God, angels, Satan, devils, blah blah blah. These high-dimensional beings seemed to regard Earth as a dueling arena, a place where they fought each other for thousands of years.

The struggle between demons and angels naturally gave rise to professions like exorcists.

Zatanna isn't exactly a rich woman. Although she runs a circus, the rapid development of the internet has diminished the children's interest in circuses.

The exorcist profession is quite profitable. If there are no customers, it's fine, but if there are, you can live on for a month. However, there is also the risk of being killed by demons and going to heaven at any time. It can be described as high risk and high reward.

Not far away, Gino was also sitting on the sofa behind the girl, resting with his eyes closed.

He was a bit tired after flying all the way from Kansas to the metropolitan area, so he decided to take a nap.

That's right.

The woman hesitated for a moment before saying, "My daughter... a week ago, something... something was wrong."

A hint of fear flashed in her eyes, and her pupils contracted slightly in fear.

"The story begins a week ago."

The woman began to recount what had happened last week.

She and her husband run a department store, which is quite profitable, and they have a lovely daughter.

In order to give their daughter the best education, the couple spent a lot of money to send her to a top private high school in the metropolis.

Everything was normal for the first few years, until the girl's senior year of high school (the fourth year of American high school). A group of thrill-seeking boys and girls organized a party and planned to explore an abandoned monastery nearby. The couple's daughter, Sarah, was naturally among them.

This group of daring young men and women set off at dawn. The pitch-black night, combined with the monastery's traditionally gloomy atmosphere, was enough to make one's mind wander and the brain constantly secrete fear.

"When Sarah came back, it was already past midnight. My husband William and I gave her a good scolding, and she seemed very tired at the time."

"At first, I just thought it was a boring high school game."

Until three days ago.

Fear flickered in the woman's eyes, and her hand holding the coffee cup trembled slightly.

The woman's thoughts drifted back to the night three days earlier.

Most Americans believe in Jesus Christ.

The woman's family were also typical Christians.

"Sarah, you don't look well?"

At the dinner table, the family, having finished their prayers, enjoyed the pasta with diced beef.

William pulled out a few tissues to wipe the bits of meat from the corners of his mouth, looking at the girl across the table with a worried expression.

Sarah was in the prime of her youth, with long blonde hair inherited from her mother, but her gray complexion marred her beauty.

Sarah sat listlessly in her chair, her fork unconsciously stirring the noodles in her plate before she put it down.

I have no appetite.

Sarah walked up to the second-floor room with a hunched back, as if something was pressing down on her, making each step extremely difficult.

William and his wife didn't think much of it, just that their daughter was probably going through puberty and experiencing some of the trivial, pointless things that men and women go through.

They stayed in bed until the early hours of the morning.

Maya was awakened by a strange sound.

Crunch crunch~

It felt like something was scratching at the door with its claws.

The sharp sound made Maya feel a little flustered.

"William, wake up!?"

She gently patted her husband's cheek, and William, still half asleep, slowly opened his eyes.

Maya asked solemnly, "Did you hear anything?"

"A sound?"

William pricked up his ears.

Crunch crunch~

"I heard that." William rubbed his eyes and yawned. "Maybe termites or something?"

"I'll get a pest control company to come and check my house tomorrow. Now I'm going to sleep."

William fell into a deep sleep, but his wife Maya was unable to sleep.

The sound echoed in my ears like a maggot clinging to my bone.

And it's getting closer and closer!

Crunch crunch~

"William, William!" Maya could no longer bear it, and she chose to wake her husband to explain the situation.

"We have to go and see!"

"Okay, okay, calm down, darling." William sighed, got out of bed in his pajamas, and pulled a revolver from the bedside table.

The couple walked towards the door, one after the other.

Timid Maya hid behind her husband.

They pushed open the door.

then.

"Father, Mother?"

Sarah's voice rang out above them, and they instinctively looked up, and then...

The blonde girl was holding a wooden Jesus sculpture in her hands, her white teeth gnawing at the head of the statue. Splinters from the broken wood pierced her mouth, but even the flowing blood could not stop her.

Her voice gradually became distorted and low, and then a man's voice emerged from Sarah's throat: "This statue smells so good!"

"She's possessed."

The steam from the coffee hitting the woman's face awakened her thoughts.

She snapped out of her reverie, and Zatanna, sitting on the other side of the table, spoke with a serious expression.

Since God created the world, and Adam and Eve multiplied, the devil, a creature of hell, has always coveted the human world. Led by Satan, they have been constantly trying to conquer the human world and turn it into their territory.

It is said that this is because God once made a bet with Lucifer, the devil of hell.

The power that controls the world will be determined by comparing the number of human souls that ascend to heaven or descend to hell.

Therefore, under Lucifer's leadership, the demons have been tirelessly wandering among humans, spreading the seven deadly sins and leading people astray.

Of course, Zatanna wasn't interested in these mystical things; she looked at the woman.

"What happened next?"

"After that, she became increasingly strange, hating daytime and sunlight, preferring the night, and even starting to eat raw beef and insult God."

Maya covered her face in despair: "And yesterday, she... she actually climbed up the ceiling of our house like a gecko!"

If his bizarre behavior a few days ago could be explained by mental illness or epilepsy, then his act of climbing walls with his bare hands and transforming into a miniature "Spider-Man" is utterly inhuman.

Maya did consider seeing a doctor, but science couldn't explain this strange thing. It could only be classified as a mental illness, and the couple was given some sedatives and sent away.
