Chapter 385 Mythical Creatures
David Watson wakes up on a medical bed.
A doctor-like person was working nearby, removing various electrode patches from his body, and then said to him, "Congratulations, Sergeant Watson, you are now a Wolf Warrior."
Once his body had adjusted a little, he was guided by medical staff to a treadmill to test his cardiopulmonary capacity, followed by grip strength and punching tests, and then various tests such as arm strength, jumping, and endurance.
Then they injected a bunch of things under his skin to test whether his body had developed any abnormal immune responses after the modifications.
After most of the day of testing, everything was in excellent condition; the doctor said he was as strong as an ox.
Finally, he was taken to the "Transformation Project Department," where he finally saw his second form and completely understood why this special operations force was called "Wolf Warrior."
He transformed into the legendary werewolf, with a long wolf snout, his body covered in gray wolf fur, and sharp claws between his hands and feet—he was practically an upright giant wolf.
This appearance did not frighten David; in fact, he was thrilled by it.
David was born in Hampshire and grew up near the "New Forest". His father was an archaeologist and an outdoor adventurer who often took young David deep into the forest. As a result, David learned many jungle survival skills and developed a deep affection for the forest.
Now that he has transformed into a wolf, he feels as if he has become closer to nature.
Therefore, during his first outdoor training session, he disregarded the activity area the instructor had mentioned and rushed into the depths of the forest, hunting like a real wolf.
He missed the return-to-camp time and intended to spend the night in the forest, but the instructors found him.
A young man wearing a strange robe appeared with a distortion of space. Then, several instructors used a large net to bind him in his wolf form and used strange space travel magic to bring him back to the camp. They then hung him outside the camp for an entire night.
The man in the robe later became his teammate.
His name was Draco Malfoy, and he was said to be a wizard.
Yes, wizard.
David Watson now knows a lot. He learned that the world possesses an energy that scientists call "void particles," but which is commonly referred to as "magic" by ordinary people.
This energy is what transformed him into a werewolf.
Wizards are masters of controlling magical energy. Unlike werewolves who can only transform into wolves using magic potions, wizards can freely create magic according to their own ideas and use their weapon—a small stick called a wand—to unleash dazzling spells.
Therefore, the wizard is the absolute core of the team.
Their team consisted of seven people, six of whom were werewolves, except for Draco.
They then underwent a lot of training, which, contrary to David's expectations, consisted mainly of routine training in tactical coordination and familiarization with firearms, in addition to getting to know the werewolf's body.
However, those firearms still opened his eyes. The headlock gun that could automatically aim and fire at the target, the rain gun that could replicate one bullet into ten, and so on, all shocked his worldview.
In addition to these, they also needed to take a "Magic Disasters General Knowledge" course, taught by several wizards. Through this course, David learned about many strange creatures and how to deal with them. David was not very good at this course and only remembered that usually all he needed to do was to shoot them into sieves with enchanted bullets.
After three months of training, Draco's team received a mission to assist a team of all-wizards in dealing with a magical disaster.
They completed their mission within ten minutes of arriving at the scene: riddling a group of five-legged monsters with bullets using a rain machine gun.
Subsequently, they officially joined the company and became the 12th squad of the Wolf Warrior Unit, a rapid reaction force under the Countermeasures Bureau.
Their tasks are not heavy, usually only once every two or three days, and most of them are very simple. Sometimes they don't even need to participate in the battle directly. Sometimes the wizard in charge calls in air support, which is enough to eliminate the enemy.
But these pleasant days came to an end during a mission.
They encountered a Chimera.
The creature was as big as a heavy truck and extremely clever and cunning. The moment they entered the forest to search, it ambushed and killed one of their team members.
David watched helplessly as the giant beast ripped Zart's head off in one gulp, and then used its tail, as thick as a tree trunk, to smash Rooney more than ten meters away.
David instinctively pulled the trigger, but the bullet, which could easily pierce thin steel plates, only caused a ripple-like effect when it hit the behemoth.
"It's protected by magic! Use anti-magic armor-piercing bullets..." Captain Yulian had just shouted these words when he was burned to a crisp by flames that seemed to spew from the mouth of a giant beast.
"Retreat! Something's wrong with this Chimera!" Vice-Captain Samira grabbed Draco, whose spells were equally ineffective against the behemoth. "Retreat, use the Portkey Amulet!"
……
"Damn it, how can a Chimera be so strong?" Draco angrily kicked the trash can away. "It's more than twice the size of what's described in the book!"
"We were too careless. We should have applied for magic satellite reconnaissance before entering the forest. If we had known it was a Chimera Beast, we would have been much more careful!"
"Zack, the captain... and Rooney..."
"This isn't right. We have to report this," said Vice-Captain Samira. "Did you notice how the behemoth defends itself against bullets? It's not just using its fur for defense; it seems to be using protective magic and can even breathe fire. This wasn't mentioned in the original files at all. This is very unusual."
"Could it be that a wizard is secretly helping it?" someone asked.
I've heard that wizards from many other countries are dissatisfied with British wizards; perhaps this is their doing?
"It doesn't seem like it. If it were a wizard, our door key might not work," Samira said.
"Evolution," David suddenly said.
"What?"
"Or rather, restoration," David murmured. "Didn't those scientists say that the level of magic is increasing? The scale and number of magic disasters are increasing, which is why we are needed."
"Draco, you also said that learning and using magic is easier now than before, right? Is it possible that the same is true for magical creatures?"
"Isn't Chimeramon a very powerful monster in mythology?"
"My father told me the legendary story of Bellerophon killing the Chimera when I was very young. The Chimera in the story was a mythical creature born of Typhon, the ancestor of all monsters, and the basilisk Echidna."
"Now, perhaps they have simply regained some of their original power."
