Chapter 316 The Investigator Who Attracts Hatred
Chapter 316 The Investigator Who Attracts Hatred
Break the Cauldron Bar.
An Egyptian sorcerer dressed in a long black robe was asking the shopkeeper, Tom, in broken English, "So, Muggles won't be able to see this place?"
"No, I refresh my Muggle Exorcism Charm every day," Tom said.
"What kind of wizards come to your place?" the other person asked again.
"What do you mean? I get a lot of people coming here because some young wizards need to get into Diagon Alley from here," Tom said.
"Have you verified their identities?"
"What?" Tom was stunned. "Verify whose identity? The person who came into the store? How is that possible?"
"How can you be so sure they're all wizards?"
"Muggles come here too, and Muggles need to go through me to get into Diagon Alley," Tom tried to explain.
"So, Muggles can find out about this place?"
"Yes, but that doesn't matter..."
"As the gateway to the wizarding world, didn't you consider the risks of exposing its existence?"
"No, I mean, those Muggles usually take their young wizards to Diagon Alley to buy things; they need to exchange money... and the young wizards need their parents to accompany them..."
"You haven't verified their identities. How can you be sure they are the young wizard's parents and not some scheming Muggle conspirator, like Second Salem, an anti-wizardist?"
"I...I..."
"Oh! Merlin's festering sore! Enough!" A wizard who was drinking slammed his glass on the table. "Leave that poor man alone! He's just a tavern owner; he has no obligation to protect the wizarding world!"
"Who are you?" the Egyptian shaman asked.
"What, you want to write down my name?" The other person glared at him fiercely. "Don't you investigators have anything better to do? All you do is harass everyone all day!"
"I must correct you," said the Egyptian wizard, "obeying the laws of wizarding secrecy is the duty of every wizard. But I find that you British don't seem to care about this."
"You'd better think carefully before you speak, sir!" another wizard stood up. "This is England, not a place where you can run wild!"
“That’s quite something,” the Egyptian wizard sneered. “But guess what? It was the British wizard who ordered us here to investigate you. It was your Dumbledore.”
"What did you say?!" These words instantly ignited the wizards' fury. Several of them stood up, ready to charge, but Tom quickly stepped in front of them. "Calm down, gentlemen, don't fight. The other party is an investigator..."
"To hell with the investigators!" someone cursed. "We British wizards don't need anyone telling us what to do!"
"The law of secrecy concerning sorcery is international law," the Egyptian sorcerer said slowly and deliberately. "We have the right to investigate you."
"Excuse me, sir, please leave my tavern." Tom's face turned cold as he watched a conflict escalate. "You are not welcome here."
"Hmph. He's dissatisfied with the law of secrecy for wizards." The Egyptian wizard muttered as he wrote something in his notebook, but finally left.
"To hell with secrecy laws, to hell with investigators!" As soon as the Egyptian sorcerer left, a burst of angry curses immediately filled the tavern.
"I really don't know what Dumbledore is thinking, sending someone else to investigate us!"
"I hope the Ministry of Magic gets rid of these guys as soon as possible! They're like a swarm of flies, absolutely disgusting."
In the corner, Sirius put down his cup and frowned.
These investigators have already incurred the wrath of wizards throughout England, and whatever they want to do is unlikely to succeed.
He has now confirmed that these wizards were not being controlled; their behavior seemed to be a planned attempt to provoke everyone, suggesting they had been switched out.
So where are the real investigators now?
……
"Four months!" Mary Thompson looked like a madwoman, her hair a mess, her face unwashed for days, her entire being etched with frenzy and exhaustion. "We have to get out of here!"
“But we don’t have a wand…” Conrad frowned. “However, you’re right, we have to get out of here, or Murphy might keep us locked up until we die.”
"I still have some magic I can use..." The fairy Brin's ugly face drooped. He hadn't been so arrogant lately, and he had even stopped cursing every day. He now realized that his fate was tied to these foolish wizards.
"Can we leave?" Mary asked immediately.
"Not really, but maybe we can send a message out..." the fairy said. "I can turn gold coins into coins that can make calls. If I throw them out, maybe someone will pick them up and be able to send our message out."
Fairies are not allowed to use wands, but the making of fairy coins does not require a wand; all that is needed is to prepare the ritual.
"But we don't have any gold coins," Conrad said.
After they entered the courtyard, everything they owned was taken away; they didn't even have a single copper nut, let alone gold coins.
"I...I have some," said the fairy Brin. "I hid a few gold coins before they searched me."
Hide it?
Where is it hidden?
They were all ordered to strip naked, so there was nowhere on their bodies to hide anything.
It can't be...
Everyone looked at the fairy.
"I put the gold coins in my mouth and my nose," the fairy said. With their big mouths and noses, hiding a few gold coins was no problem for them.
"Oh..." Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
Two days later, they made a few gold coins and threw one out every now and then. Diagon Alley was not far from their yard, with a lot of foot traffic. Once someone picked it up, they could talk to that person, and then they would have hope.
……
"Lord Murphy," an Auror placed several gold coins on a tray and handed them to Murphy, "these are the fairy coins they made, but we intercepted them all."
These fairy coins are now too far away to receive a signal.
Murphy glanced at it and said, "It took them so long to come up with this idea. I don't know whether to call them stupid or too leisurely."
"How many gold coins do they have left?"
"There should be at most two or three left," Auror said.
"Wait another day," Murphy said, "and then start closing the net."
The fish that needed to be caught have been caught almost all; those in the British wizarding world who are still trying to oppose Murphy have basically all ended up in Azkaban.
Moreover, they have successfully attracted enough hatred, and it's time to give the public an explanation and let everyone vent their anger.
