Chapter 53 Where is my cat?
The tip of the staff, which had been continuously drawing circles, stopped moving in mid-air, from which thick, inky black mist surged, churning and condensing violently.
Irving stared at the scene, his face slightly pale, feeling a sense of powerlessness for the first time.
Just when he thought he would fail again, the black mist silently emerged with a clear outline, gaining a complete form, and simply appeared in front of him.
Owen breathed a slight sigh of relief, feeling his somewhat tired energy. He tilted his head and carefully examined the thing he had summoned.
It clearly did not have a complete human form; a long, wide, jet-black cloak billowed as if blown by the wind, beneath which was a dark mist. Above the cloak's triangular collar was a tall, black bowler hat, the brim pulled low, revealing only a white crescent-shaped hole in the black mist below, like a curved, ever-smiling mouth.
"That's kind of cool... wait, why does this thing need such strong magic?!" This is definitely not a spell on the same level as the Guardian Charm!
While magic in this world doesn't consume mana, different spells require varying levels of mana. Using the concept of a mana bar, casting spells doesn't consume mana, but a wizard's mana bar has a limit; some spells, if exceeding this limit, cannot be cast.
This spell almost exceeded Owen's magical limit, considering that his magical power level was already comparable to that of an adult wizard.
The summoned creature floated around Owen once. Although it also had a cold and evil feel to it, it did not affect him. Instead, it made him feel a sense of familiarity and security.
As Owen's thoughts stirred, the Dark Guardian, who had been leaning against him, vanished silently into black mist. Owen was taken aback, sensing that it hadn't completely disappeared like a guardian spirit, but rather transformed into some kind of dark and heavy power that clung to his body, invisible yet undeniably present.
Owen turned to look at Voldemort, and seeing the surprise and contemplation in the other's eyes, he nearly cursed out loud. Owen was certain that Voldemort's test wasn't intended to make him pass at all; it was just a way to torment and torture him!
Calm down, I can't just slap him, at least not now... Irving took a deep breath and said calmly, "Professor, I guess I passed the test?"
Voldemort suppressed his surprise and stared at him with an extremely mysterious yet delighted look, making Owen's heart pound with fear.
"Congratulations," he said softly, "you passed. It seems you're even more capable than I thought." He paused, staring at Owen with an extremely strange expression, and said meaningfully, "You were born to be a dark wizard, Owen."
"That would be my honor, Professor," Owen replied with a forced smile. He was genuinely afraid that if he stayed here any longer, he would lose his temper and punch that annoying face in front of him.
"The Dark Guardian... You've completed this spell. Even without summoning it, you're now immune to Dementors. A fully-fledged Dark Guardian can intimidate and even destroy them, as well as attack and destroy humans... It has many other uses; you'll need to explore them yourself," Voldemort said slowly. "You may leave now."
"Goodbye, Professor." Owen strode out the door, closed it behind him, and walked away through gritted teeth.
As they approached the common room, Owen finally regained his composure. He twirled his wand in his hand, his eyes narrowing, reviewing the previous lessons, a slow smile spreading across his face: "At least I didn't lose out..."
He waved his wand to his side, feeling that he needed a genuine Patronus to soothe his soul.
"Protect the Gods!"
The spell was recited, but the wand did not react.
Owen's smile froze. He waved his wand again and chanted "Patron Saint," but still no silver cat Patronus appeared.
"Where's my cat?" His newly acquired cat!
Owen suddenly turned back to look in the direction he had come from. He understood that the Dark Guardian was not a reversed version of the Patronus Charm, but a dark magic transformation targeting the Patronus Charm! And it was irreversible; at least he had no way to reverse it now!
"What level of dark magic is this?" Owen realized he had been tricked badly.
In the first act of his confrontation with the Dark Lord, Owen, relying on his psychological skills and acting abilities, successfully deceived his opponent despite carrying a weak oath, managing to infiltrate his side with relative freedom. Owen suffered a minor defeat, but he was ready to retaliate with a vengeance at any time.
In the second act of the confrontation with the Dark Lord, Owen truly lost a round due to his overwhelming superiority in magical knowledge.
It seems frustrating, but compared to the Dark Lord, Irving is a weakling, so they can only resort to roundabout tactics.
Irving stroked his chin and chuckled, "Heh, that's interesting."
……
Inside the Defense Against the Dark Arts office, Voldemort watched Owen leave through the door with a meaningful look, then suddenly closed his eyes and relinquished control of his body.
Quirrell covered his head, his face deathly pale, and gasped for breath like a fish out of water. He frantically pulled out a bottle of potion and gulped it down before cowering in his chair, trembling.
"Master...why, that magic..." he sobbed. If his master hadn't used that magic, he wouldn't be under such a heavy burden! At the same time, he also deeply remembered that powerful magic; perhaps he could...
"You can't learn it." Voldemort chuckled. "That's the most advanced dark magic. Even none of my Death Eaters have been able to master it... I didn't really expect that little guy to succeed anyway; I just wanted to punish him for his ungratefulness."
Quirrell nodded obsequiously, but inwardly he was unconvinced. If even a junior wizard could learn it, he certainly wouldn't be any worse; he had to prove his talent to his master!
"Is that so? The methods to learn it are quite simple," Voldemort said calmly. "One method is to forcibly master it using superior dark magic skills, and the other method is to use dark magic to transform it, turning it from light into darkness, based on having a Patronus."
Quirrell was taken aback. He knew he couldn't do the first method, and as for the second method... ever since he was possessed by the Dark Lord, he couldn't use the Guardian Charm anymore.
"I never thought I'd been fooled by that little guy before," Voldemort muttered to himself.
"He...he dared to deceive his master!" Quirrell quickly pledged his loyalty.
"Yes, yes, I thought I could lead him into darkness, but I didn't expect... Heh heh." Voldemort chuckled knowingly. "Only someone with a truly terrifying darkness hidden within can truly complete this spell. He seems to be drawn to the light, but in reality, he's walking a tightrope between light and darkness. He doesn't need my guidance at all; he just needs a gentle push."
"Master, why are you so insistent on letting him..." Quirrell asked cautiously.
"He wasn't qualified before, but now... that's interesting." Voldemort muttered something irrelevant to the question, and then stopped responding.
But Quirrell clearly sensed the Dark Lord's excitement and... ecstasy!
