Chapter 3 Tonight, the Undead Join the Hunt

"Am I asleep?"

Yu Jin sat on the edge of the bed, a hint of doubt in his eyes.

As an ember, he shouldn't be able to find peace anywhere but by a campfire, but now...

"Bang bang bang~!"

Three knocks on the door interrupted Yu Jin's thoughts.

Upon opening the door, Archbishop Antony appeared before him.

Good morning, Your Excellency.

Archbishop Anthony tapped his chest four times clockwise, smiling slightly. "Would you like some breakfast?"

Ember nodded, then added, "You can call me..."

Ember paused for a moment. He remembered that he was Ember, but suddenly realized that he had forgotten his real name.

After a moment of silence, Ember slowly spoke, "Ember."

"Yes, Mr. Ember."

Archbishop Anthony nodded slightly, realizing that Ember did not want him to continue using the title of "Cherisher".

It was as if the other party hadn't revealed the Night Badge.

"Please follow me, Mr. Ember."

Archbishop Anthony gestured for him to follow, and led Ember downstairs to the refectory behind the church.

A hearty breakfast had been prepared for the two of them at the cafeteria table.

Archbishop Anthony smiled and invited Ember to sit down, saying, "This is what I prepared according to Rune's dietary habits. I hope you like it. If there's anything else you'd like to eat, please let me know."

Yu Jin nodded slightly and sat down at the table without any suspicion.

Then, the archbishop saw Ember remove his helmet, revealing a handsome but somewhat lifeless face.

Ember ignored the archbishop's gaze, simply picked up a loaf of white bread from the table, and took a bite.

Although he, as "Ember," does not need to eat, his memories tell him that he needs to keep eating.

If possible, it's best to have regular three meals a day.

This makes him more like a 'person'.

Thank you for your hospitality.

Yu Jin quickly finished his breakfast, thanked Anthony, and put his helmet back on.

At the same time, an ice-blue longsword radiating a chilling aura appeared out of thin air in his hand.

He then silently retraced his steps to the church hall.

Now, he is setting off to find the Black Emperor.

"Splash! Snap!"

The sound of armor lapping against each other mingled with heavy footsteps as a man clad in full knight's armor appeared in the hall.

Then he stopped.

The reason for stopping was that the hall, which had been completely empty last night, was now full of people.

The morning sunlight pierced through the church's stained glass windows, illuminating the rows of smooth seats on either side of the bright red carpet.

The room was filled with men and women dressed in all sorts of costumes, bowing their heads, closing their eyes, and whispering devoutly to the goddess.

Even the arrival of the embers could not interrupt their prayers.

"Mr. Ember".

Archbishop Anthony appeared beside Ember at some point and said softly, "The goddess asked me to tell you that the world is now completely different from what it used to be, and you may need some time to adapt to all these changes."

"..."

Ember did not reply, his gaze sweeping over the people who were bowing their heads in prayer.

Then, he nodded silently.

He turned and walked back to the restaurant.

"Mr. Ember".

Archbishop Anthony spoke slowly, but was quickly interrupted by Ember.

"ember."

"Okay, Ember."

Archbishop Anthony wasn't annoyed; he simply smiled and nodded. "To help you better adapt to this world, I've prepared an identity for you, one of which is that of a Night Watcher for the Church of the Night."

"Next, you can report to the Backlund Night Watch headquarters, which is located at the Backlund Detective Agency behind the church, and find a man named Al Hassen. After reporting, you don't have to rush back to the church; you can wander around a bit."

"By the way, your current identity is Ash Black."

After a pause, Archbishop Anthony added, "You can use this identity to gather clues about the Black Emperor. Also, here is your operating budget, a total of one hundred gold pounds."

After saying that, Anthony handed Yu Jin ten banknotes with the denomination of ten written on them.

"Gold pounds?"

Ember suddenly asked, "Currency? Can't we buy it with souls?"

"All transactions in Backlund are conducted in gold pounds."

Anthony shook his head; his meaning was already quite clear—

He didn't know anything about souls.

"at last."

Anthony looked at the armor on Yu Jin's body and advised, "If possible, you'd better change your clothes. Hmm, like the believers in the hall."

After thinking for a moment, Yu Jin decided to follow Anthony's advice.

After only a brief pause, his knight's armor vanished instantly.

Instead, they wore a dark brown Undead Legion suit.

Although it's still leather armor, Ember feels at least more understated.

"You can take off your helmet."

Anthony looked on in surprise; he hadn't even noticed how Ember had managed to do all that.

But being a demigod, he quickly realized what was happening, glanced at the pointed triangular iron helmet on Yu Jin's head, and offered his advice again.

"so?"

Yu Jin removed his mask, revealing his handsome face again, and asked.

"Yes."

Anthony smiled and nodded. "You are free to move around as you please. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime."

Yu Jin nodded slightly, then silently turned around and walked back to the hall.

Meanwhile, the believers in the hall had finished their prayers.

Their gaze fell on the strangely dressed Yu Jin, but they didn't pay much attention, assuming he was just an eccentric nobleman.

Then they lined up and went to the altar, putting their gold coins into the offering box next to the altar.

Ember looked away, turned and walked out of the church.

The moment he stepped out the door, the dazzling and warm sunlight shone on him.

Ember subconsciously raised his head and looked up at the sun overhead.

"They're completely different."

Yu Jin looked at the bustling crowds on the street and murmured softly.

In the world of Dark Souls, there aren't that many living people, nor is the sun that bright.

Rather, this actually made Ember have a suspicion.

Is there really any need for the fire to be passed on in this world?

Ember didn't know, but he decided to complete the mission first.

Searching for the "Backlund Detective Agency".

"Is it on the back?"

Ember turned around and glanced at the Church of St. Samuel, then determined the direction.

Follow the crowd to the right.

Soon, he easily found a right-turn path and crossed it without any hindrance.

Three minutes later.

When Ember stood in front of the gate of the Backlund Detective Agency, his expression was full of suspicion.

It was as if he had encountered something that shattered his understanding—

"No need for detours or shortcuts? What's wrong with this world?"
