Chapter 99 One Step at a Time (First Update)

The moment the call connected, Hawking's first words left Nick Fury speechless.

"Mr. Hawking, today is Christmas, not April Fool's Day. Please don't play such jokes."

"I'm not kidding, the professor has been kidnapped by Magneto."

Hawking quickly explained the situation to Nick Fury.

The apocalypse is coming, and this is not just a matter for mutants, but for all of humanity. To be more precise, humanity will suffer far more.

When Apocalypse ruled humanity, at least some mutants with abilities that overlapped with Apocalypse were relatively safe and held a higher status, while humans were only fit to be slaves.

So it doesn't make sense that such a big thing happened and they're the only ones worrying about it, while Nick Fury, who's always talking about maintaining world peace, is just sitting around doing nothing.

Captain Marvel, Captain Carter, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and May—these S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, along with the drugs and weapons that can counter mutant abilities, are a considerable asset.

Captain Marvel, in particular, was someone he couldn't beat even when he transformed into a giant ape a few years ago; she could definitely be a great help.

Furthermore, he didn't know exactly which city in Egypt Apocalypse and Magneto would launch their operation, so he could ask Nick Fury to help him find out.

"Are you sure Apocalypse is as powerful as you say?"

After listening to the story, Nick Fury's voice became much more serious.

Hawking replied decisively:

"It might be even more serious than I'm making it out to be. Do you think I would joke about something like this? If you don't believe me, the teachers at the school are all here. It's not like we're all lying to you."

"But...but I really don't have enough manpower available right now, Hydra."

Nick Fury offered an explanation, albeit with a rare hint of embarrassment.

It turns out that after the last attack, he also began a full-scale counterattack against Hydra.

And because he had his wife Captain Marvel as his backing, he defeated Hydra, led by Pierce, and almost completely wiped them out of S.H.I.E.L.D.

However, for some reason, Hydra seems to have gone mad today and has begun to launch retaliatory, inhumane terrorist attacks around the world.

This left him somewhat overwhelmed. Almost all the special agents had been dispatched to help suppress the fire, and even Captain Marvel was busy fighting fires in major cities around the world.

If everyone were to stop now to help Hawking and his team fight Apocalypse, many people would likely die.

The International Security Council had already lost much confidence in S.H.I.E.L.D. because of the infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. by Hydra led by Pierce, and was considering whether to continue funding the agency in the future.

If S.H.I.E.L.D. cannot handle the terrorist attacks brought by Hydra now, the International Security Council will surely stop supporting S.H.I.E.L.D., and the privileges it originally granted will also cease to exist.

Most importantly, Apocalypse might not actually be as powerful as Hawking said. If it can be used to cause the mutants to weaken each other through infighting, then S.H.I.E.L.D. will be in a much better position.

Although the Hydra crisis was resolved, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s strength was also reduced to its previous state.

The original three-way control has now turned S.H.I.E.L.D. into the weakest link, which is not a good thing.

"Chief Fury, you'd better think this through."

If Apocalypse's consciousness were to truly transfer to Professor X, then in conjunction with Magneto, the resulting damage would far surpass that of a Hydra terrorist attack; the entire human civilization would be wiped out.

You should weigh the pros and cons yourself!

Hawking wasn't stupid; he naturally guessed Nick Fury's inner thoughts, and his tone involuntarily turned cold.

He finally understood why Nick Fury created the Avengers program, connecting the individual Avengers to form the Avengers Alliance.

However, it was Iron Man and Captain America who ultimately led the Avengers.

Compared to superheroes, Nick Fury is more like a politician, too concerned with interests and gains and losses.

"Okay, Mr. Hawking, I will help you find Magneto and the others as quickly as possible, and I will also get Captain Marvel to support you as soon as possible."

As allies, even in its current difficult situation, S.H.I.E.L.D. will certainly not leave its allies to fight alone.

"Send me the location once you find it."

Too lazy to listen to Nick Fury's rambling, Hawking hung up the phone.

He knew very well that an old fox like Nick Fury couldn't be changed by a few words, so he simply stopped wasting his time.

He believed Nick Fury would do his best to help find Magneto and Apocalypse, but he estimated that even if Captain Marvel was sent, the battle would definitely go on until the very end.

If they win, they'll pretend they just arrived; if they lose, Apocalypse will probably be upset too, and their chances of winning will be even greater.

"Very well, since you're going to pull this stunt on me, then don't blame me for being impolite."

After hanging up with Nick Fury, Hawking thought for a moment and then made another call.

First, he sent the location to Peter, Venom, and Jessica, telling them to come quickly.

He then contacted Jonah Jameson, the head of the Daily Bugle, as well as Green Goblin and the company's public relations manager.

They were instructed to use whatever means necessary to spread the news of the Apocalypse's destruction as quickly as possible, after some revisions.

We must make sure that everyone in the world knows about this major crisis.

At the same time, we will contact the most famous journalists in New York and ask them to come here as well, so that we can travel with them and provide real-time follow-up reports and live broadcasts.

Aren't you, S.H.I.E.L.D., supposed to stay out of the spotlight?

Alright, let League of Legends make a name for itself in this mission to save the world.

This will make it clear to all nations that when humanity faces such an irresistible cataclysmic crisis, neither S.H.I.E.L.D. nor the armies of any country can be relied upon; only their League of Heroes superheroes can save the world.

If he does a good job this time, then he won't need Nick Fury's help with government-related matters in the future.

Furthermore, the revenue of League of Legends International will also surge as a result.

"Hawking, what are you going to do?"

The X-Men standing nearby looked equally bewildered as they listened to Hawking making those phone calls.

They understand calling Nick Fury, but what about all the manipulation behind it?

"As you all probably know, my purpose in founding League of Legends International was to use this superhero company to make mutants more acceptable to the general public."

The professor and I originally planned to take it step by step, first recruiting some non-mutant superheroes, and then gradually adding mutant superheroes after we made a name for ourselves.

Now that we have this opportunity, let's take this chance and get it done in one go.

When the reporters arrive, don't say you're X-Men from the mutant school. Just say you're superheroes who recently joined League of Legends International, except you're mutants.

Hawking explained slowly.
