Chapter 83 Companion Flowers
Chapter 83 Companion Flowers
The outside world doesn't seem so scary.
After leaving the Wizard's Tower, the lives of ordinary people are probably similar to those in ancient times in Thor's previous life.
However, the next second, Kaz's words shattered Thor's illusion.
"Those enclosed carriages were basically used for transporting materials."
"Material?"
"Most of them are corpses that have been contaminated from outside. After all, there are only so many people in the Wizard Tower. If you were relying on the corpses produced in the tower, you would have been out of work long ago."
No wonder Thor had never seen the faces of many of the corpses.
Will surrounding towns send people over voluntarily?
"They don't have the capability. It's mostly third-level apprentices who voluntarily collect the contaminated corpses. It's also a way of indirectly protecting the safety of the surrounding territories. Otherwise, why do you think they'd all be willing to send their children here?"
Kaz smiled, his smile revealing neither smugness nor mockery.
The two walked toward the garden.
As they approached, a small window of the cabin opened, and a middle-aged man with a sallow complexion poked his head out.
His facial features were relatively flat, except for his prominent, long nose, which resembled Pinocchio.
It may have been modified as well.
"Good afternoon, Lord Kaz!" he greeted his mentor, Kaz, warmly.
Kaz nodded in response, then pointed to the man and said to Thor, "That's the gardener. After you've chosen your companion flowers, he'll teach you how to cultivate them."
Thor quickly nodded to the gardener, who returned a bright smile revealing a mouthful of yellow teeth.
As the two walked to the garden gate, a breeze blew by, and the aroma of freshly baked bread wafted into Thor's nose.
What you see here is called a garden, but it's more like a vegetable patch.
The land was divided into several plots, each planted with rows of flowers. The flower stems were slender, but the buds were quite large, and each flower had only two petals.
Some flowers are in full bloom, while others are still buds.
When the wind blows, it looks like rows of big-headed dolls dancing.
The bread has a richer aroma.
Even though he had already eaten, Thor still felt hungry.
"Teacher, are these all companion flowers?"
Katz raised his chin. "They are all the same. Companion flowers are just a general term for a type of plant. You see, they look different, but their growth process and characteristics are the same."
The two moved between the ridges of the field.
Thor felt as if the flowers were turning their heads along with them, though he couldn't tell which flower's head was in front and which was behind.
"These kinds of companion flowers thrive on decaying matter, so they can't be grown in ordinary soil. After you've chosen your flowers, go back to the florist and have him transplant them into small pots for you. He'll also give you a bag of fertilizer."
Flower fertilizer?
Thor paused in his tracks.
Was he the kind of fertilizer he almost became?
"The companion flower bears fruit approximately every six months. Each plant produces one fruit. There are many types of fruit, and the probability of producing which type varies. There are currently no methods for targeted cultivation. The blue fruit increases magical power, while the red fruit enhances physical constitution..."
Thor quickly took out paper and pen from his backpack and began to take notes.
Kaz glanced at Thor and shook his head. "You should have recorded this a long time ago. Green is an antidote, purple is poisonous, and if it's white, remember to hand it over to the Wizard Tower."
Thor paused in his recording, and after a while, Katz still didn't continue.
"Master, is there a problem with the white fruit?"
"No, the white fruit stabilizes the spirit body, and the tower is quite lacking in it. If you can really cultivate a white fruit, exchanging it for 20 credits shouldn't be a problem."
20 credits... half a year's salary!
That's really valuable!
When Thor looked at the flowers again, he felt as if he were looking at a mountain of gold.
"It's difficult to transplant plants that have already bloomed; you can just choose a bud."
"Yes, mentor." Thor put away his notebook and approached the field.
There are hundreds of flowers in the flower field, most of which have already bloomed, while a few are still in the bud stage.
Since it concerned his academic credits, Saul didn't act immediately. Instead, he tried to deduce a companion flower that could produce white fruit through his own observation.
Even if it's the worst case scenario, it will still bear blue fruit.
These flowers grew haphazardly. They were of different colors and shapes; some resembled roses, others tulips, and none of them bore fruit.
The results that should have been obtained have already been removed.
Just as Thor was observing intently, the faint voice of his mentor, Kaz, came from behind him again.
"Rum, do you want to be registered under his name?"
Saul stopped to observe and immediately turned around.
After a very brief hesitation, he honestly admitted, "Yes."
Kaz nodded, showing no sign of anger.
"I've noticed that too. There must have been another reason why you chose me as your mentor in the first place, right?"
Thor's choice of Kaz as his mentor was undoubtedly Kongsa's doing. That potion temporarily enhanced Thor's perception of dark elemental particles, briefly surpassing light element to become the element he could perceive most effectively.
This led Thor, who might have chosen Rum as his mentor, to unknowingly choose Kars instead.
"So, do you regret it now?" Instructor Kaz asked.
"No regrets," Thor replied immediately.
So, not only to curry favor with his mentor, Thor genuinely felt he had nothing to regret.
If it weren't for the opportunity given by Kongsa, Saul wouldn't even have been qualified to become an apprentice.
Instead of blaming Kongsa for her scheming, we should consider it the price we have to pay to become an apprentice.
This aligns perfectly with Byron's values.
Kaz gave a wry smile, but it was a rather sinister one.
"Yes, you've undergone witch body modification, and your nature is now biased towards the dark attribute. There's no going back now."
Thor immediately felt that the sunlight on his body was no longer so warm.
He immediately emphasized, "I truly have no regrets, mentor! If I hadn't been working in the morgue, I would never have been able to complete the transformation..."
Oh no, I almost revealed that I was lining my own pockets.
Thor quickly changed the subject, "...and I quite like working in the morgue, it's especially good for focused research and study."
It's unclear whether Kaz heard about Thor stealing the materials, but the other's expression clearly improved.
"Sigh..." Instructor Kaz hunched over, standing with his hands behind his back, and sighed softly, "If only everyone could learn to be content like you."
other people?
Who?
What is there to be dissatisfied about?
Ever since learning the identity of the Tower Master, Thor has suspected that the job in the morgue might have been arranged for him by the Tower Master.
The tower master has already ordered him to study corpses and souls, how could Thor dare to disobey?
Moreover, his words were not against his conscience; working in the morgue was indeed very suitable for him at the moment.
I never expected that Mentor Kaz would make such a remark.
This gave Thor a vague sense of unease.
Whose dissatisfaction could cause such melancholy in Mentor Kaz?
Katz ended the conversation, leaving Thor with a bellyful of questions.
"With your current abilities, working in the morgue shouldn't be a problem. As long as you submit all the materials on time, I'll let you pass the test."
Will every monthly test be this simple from now on?
"Thank you, mentor. I will finish it."
Thor was initially worried about how much witchcraft his mentors would require him to learn during the second test.
He has a lot to learn now, so his study of witchcraft can only be slowed down.
Saul recalled that Mark's test also seemed to be a task-based test involving organizing the lab.
This further solidified his original conjecture:
The Wizard Tower is not actually a school, but rather an institution.
The initial rapid learning for apprentices is onboarding training. Newcomers who are unable to perform any job duties after training will be dismissed.
The Wizard Tower is a very demanding organization, and even dismissed employees must contribute their own energy and resources to the Wizard Tower.
In that sense, the two newcomers who left the classroom first during the initial testing, without having learned even a single compound rune, were actually in great danger.
Thinking back, Saul didn't seem to see them in class today.
Could they have been... "fired"?
"Thank you, mentor. I will continue to work hard to complete this task," Thor solemnly promised his mentor again.
"Okay." Kaz turned and started walking back. "Take your time choosing. Once you've chosen, go find the gardener. Just be back at the tower before sunset."
