Chapter 829 Fate is Unpredictable

Although Alfonso is not responsible for taking care of the Red Sea Tree, he can still bring Thor into the Red Sea without any problem.

The timing of their entry into the Red Sea was quite opportune. When Thor and Alfonso came down, the swarms of mermaids weren't lounging lazily on the seabed, but rather gathered around the roots of the Red Sea Trees, gnawing at something with their sharp teeth.

Upon closer inspection, one can see brown rhizomes hanging from the tree roots like tree burls.

These mermaids had very strange expressions, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely, as if they were having a feast.

As Thor and his companions passed by, not a single merman paid them any attention.

Saul released Kate and whispered to him, "Let's split up and search. If you find a similar scent, call me."

Kate nodded; he wasn't as sensitive to the Blue Scale Clan's bloodline as Thor. If Floco weren't currently unable to possess someone, having him come along to help search would have been the fastest way.

Currently, Thor and Kate can only try to find other mermaids with the bloodline of the Blue Scale Clan based on the clues left by Froco.

Alfonso didn't search; he stopped where the roots were densest and watched Saul and Kate's every move.

The Red Sea Tree is a very important strategic resource, concerning the future of the entire Neflet continent, so naturally he wouldn't leave Thor alone underwater.

Of course, there's no need to worry too much.

The unique nature of the Red Sea and the Red Sea Trees drew the attention of the entire tribunal.

If a situation becomes uncontrollable, even the Chief Justice of the Tribunal, Flim, will arrive immediately.

Alfonso was actually protecting Saul by not letting him cause trouble.

Thor knew that Alfonso was watching him. Although he was ostensibly searching for the atavistic mermaid, he was actually searching for his own target.

Tens of thousands of mermaids gathered under the Red Sea Tree. Thor only swept through for a few days before sinking to the seabed to see if any had escaped.

Kate, on the other hand, searched for her target by smell near the tree roots.

Thor swam deeper and deeper, getting closer to some distant canyons and caves.

Alfonso's eyes were fixed on Saul, and his hands were already clasped together without him even realizing it.

Thor was unaware that Alfonso above had become inexplicably tense, and was simply searching in places where fish rarely roamed.

He's looking for a mermaid with the blood of Froco. Such a mermaid, like the one Kate possessed, is likely trying to escape the Red Sea and may appear in a hidden area on the edge of the Red Sea.

Even if they cannot escape because the entire Red Sea Tree is under strict control by the Tribunal, they will likely try their best to get rid of the influence of the Red Sea Tree roots on them.

Suddenly, as he passed a place covered with thick roots, Thor vaguely sensed a rather peculiar spiritual force.

But that spiritual energy vanished in a flash, as if the anomaly Thor had just sensed was merely his illusion.

But Saul knew he hadn't made a mistake.

He stood on the tree roots where the spiritual energy fluctuations had just appeared and gently stomped his foot on the ground.

Just as Saul was about to lift the tree roots to take a look, Alfonso came down from above.

"Did you find anything?"

"There might be mermaids down there too."

Alfonso stepped forward and directly lifted up a large section of tree roots, stirring up mud and sand from the seabed.

The commotion was quite loud.

Thor raised an eyebrow slightly, but did not stop him.

"There are mermaids down there." Alfonso glanced down, then said to Thor, "Do you want to go down and catch that mermaid?"

Thor smiled. "I'll go check it out and be right back."

Alfonso made no other move this time, just waiting upstairs.

Thor went for a swim and saw a mermaid lying on a rock.

This mermaid has several blue scales on its tail, which clearly indicates that it is related to atavistic mermaids.

But when Thor scanned the other party's mental body, he found that the other party's mental energy fluctuations were not quite the same as the hidden mental energy he had just discovered.

The mermaid from earlier should have already escaped.

Thor didn't search any further; even if he went down, he'd probably only find one or two ordinary mermaids at most.

That extremely well-hidden mental energy must have disappeared.

Now that we've failed to track down our target, we've basically lost them.

Thor grabbed the mermaid he had discovered and pulled her out of the crack in the ground.

"There's one hidden here." Thor showed the mermaid he had pulled out to Alfonso.

"There are too many mermaids here; they were probably pushed down and don't know how to escape."

The mermaid that Thor brought out was very thin, even thinner than the other mermaids.

If Thor hadn't already discerned that the mermaid before him wasn't the one he had just discovered, he might have agreed with Alfonso's assessment that it was a mermaid who had been pushed aside, couldn't find a way out, and had been starved to death.

Alfonso's gaze shifted downwards, and he saw a palm-sized blue scale on the unusually thin mermaid's tail.

"Congratulations, you've found your target among so many mermaids."

Can Thor say that his real goal wasn't actually to become a primal mermaid?

No, so he took the mermaid who had become his scapegoat back with him.

When Thor left the Red Sea, he brought back some roots and stems of the Red Sea Tree. After all, how could he study mermaids without the assistance of the Red Sea Tree?

Unfortunately, to take away a complete Red Sea Tree, one must apply to the Tribunal's special Red Sea Tree Maintenance Team and then temporarily remove part of the seals protecting the Red Sea Tree in order to transplant it without damage.

The leader of the maintenance team was, of course, Roye, a third-tier wizard who cherished the Red Sea Tree immensely.

But Royer wasn't there.

Sol had no choice but to settle for second best and chose a branch with relatively strong vitality, intending to try it out by putting it in water when he got back.

Sitting on the small boat on the return trip, the mermaid Kate huddled in a corner, holding the ancestral mermaid she had just captured.

Although the two mermaids were not of the same bloodline, they were still of the same species. With Kate's reassurance, the new captive was able to settle down a bit.

Saul gave Kate a look, then turned to ask Alfonso, who was steering the ship.

"Does this mermaid have a name?"

Alfonso focused intently on steering the boat, not even glancing at the new mermaid. "You spotted him first."

Thor turned around. The newly captured mermaid was male. Following Alfonso's naming convention, "Let's call him Quartz for now."

The mermaid, now with a new name, stirred, then was once again held tightly by Kate.

The road back was still dark, just like the difficulties Thor was facing.

"If the cause of the mermaid's illness cannot be found or resolved, you may have to accept Royer's plan to create a new royal family and modify the mermaids."

Alfonso, however, said, "I don't have high hopes for Royer's plan either. A new royal family? If bloodline fusion were that simple, the Tribunal wouldn't have allowed the current Eternal Night royal family to exist for so long."

A sigh rang out from the dark, flowing water.

"The fusion of bloodlines cannot be achieved through calculations and formulas; sometimes, it is as unpredictable as fate. And fate cannot be created."
