Chapter 610 The Poor Apprentice and the Serious Senior
Chapter 610 The Poor Apprentice and the Serious Senior
Byron still preferred to treat his lodgings as his laboratory, and he would take the black powder back to his room to study it alone.
Thor greeted his senior, whom he hadn't seen in a long time—even though his senior was no longer as powerful as him—and only went to see Noah, the junior apprentice he had abandoned in the Chaotic Realm, a day late.
The chaotic region remained a vast expanse of black sand, with gently undulating terrain and no mountains or forests in sight. Only at the horizon could one see some dark gray, mountain-like undulations.
Thor turned around and saw a crooked little house on a small hill.
Or you could call it a shack.
The materials used to build the house were mainly some unused shelves that Thor had thrown to Noah.
Marsh, the coachman who was no longer driving, provided giant mushrooms, but unfortunately, these mushrooms couldn't thrive in the chaotic realm. They could only grow to the thickness of an index finger in pots, barely enough to fill one's stomach.
Thor walked a few steps to the simple house, circled around it, but did not see Noah.
He simply flew into the air and soon spotted the young apprentice working with his head down in a low-lying area in the distance.
Thor flew over and saw Noah pull a dark green plant from the ground, which looked somewhat like an aloe vera.
"Mentor!" Noah looked up and saw Thor, and was immediately moved to tears.
Life in the chaotic region was incredibly difficult. He both longed to meet other people and feared meeting them. Living alone, he barely felt the passage of time, except for sunrises and sunsets.
Furthermore, with Thor not arriving within a month, Noah hasn't slept well for the past two days, constantly worried that Thor has left him alone here.
Seeing his little apprentice's teary eyes, Thor knew what he was worried about and couldn't help but smile and pat the other's head.
After the algae flew out from the back of Thor's neck and wrapped around Noah's abdomen, Thor carried Noah back to his hut.
"Didn't you use the witchcraft tools I gave you when you built this house?"
Some magical items can also be used by ordinary people who do not have magic power.
Noah shrank his neck. "I... I thought it would be better to conserve magic crystals before I got familiar with this place, so I didn't use them."
He was somewhat worried that Saul would blame him for not trusting him.
But Thor approved of Noah's choice. "Good, after all, you're living here alone, it's more important to have your own opinions. What are you holding in your hand, some plants from here?"
Noah raised his hand. "It's a plant with a lot of water content. I tested it with the reagents you left behind, and it's basically safe. So I'd like to transplant it near the house to see if I can cultivate more of it."
Although Thor left Noah plenty of food, he was still trying to find new ways to survive.
Thor examined all the other things Noah had collected: a few withered plants, some remains that looked like the corpses of creatures, and a lot of useless stones.
Because Noah's knowledge was still insufficient, Thor did not criticize him, but encouraged him to continue exploring, provided that he ensured his own safety.
"How many basic runes have you learned so far?"
"Three." Noah immediately squatted down and wrote it on the ground with his finger.
Unable to infuse magic or mobilize mental energy, Noah can only memorize runes by rote.
"You managed to learn two runes on your own without any guidance? Looks like you have a good talent for graphic design. But when you start learning composite runes, that talent won't be enough."
Thor squatted down without hesitation. "I'll teach you a method called the coordinate method. It will help you remember it, and most importantly, it will help you understand composite runes in the future."
With no one around, Thor used the earth as a whiteboard and reorganized his experience in learning runes and his years of spellcasting experience into a coordinate system to teach his apprentice.
Noah's eyes widened as if he were seeing a whole new world.
The day passed quickly as he eagerly studied. Thor gave Noah a final warning: be careful of monsters, and even more so of intelligent creatures. Only then did he leave the Chaotic Realm and return to the Spirit Cleansing Wizard Tower.
Sensing Thor's return, the butler Hope immediately came to his door.
"Lord Tower Master, Mr. Byron came to see you last night."
Byron is actually a pretty homebody; he usually won't come looking for you unless there's something important to discuss.
Saul quickly found Byron and found his room littered with draft papers.
"..." Thor stood in the doorway, feeling a bit lost, unsure where to place his foot. "You're adapting pretty quickly!"
Byron looked up, completely ignoring Thor's sarcastic remark, "Look at this."
Saul crossed the mess on the floor and came to the table, only to be shocked to find that Byron's hands were covered in blisters. Some of the blisters had burst and were oozing a bluish liquid.
"Pollution?" Thor frowned immediately.
Byron, however, pointed to the parchment spread out on the table. "Look at this."
Saul then turned his attention to the paper.
The parchment was covered with crookedly written words, which eventually led to a conclusion.
...The formula for the formation of black powder (Byron's abbreviation for the powder that Thor brought back from the Chaotic Realm, which has the same pollution source characteristics as the Black Tide) is reversible. Once this formula is mastered, the Black Tide pollution unique to the No Man's Land can also be transformed into inert black powder... Similarly, by reversing the formula, inert black powder can also be restored to active Black Tide pollution.
Saul's mouth slowly opened wide. He hadn't expected Byron to reach such a conclusion in just one day.
"Take a look, do you see any problems with my derivation? If you can't find any problems either, then I'll continue deriving the formula in this direction. Hmm... let's call it the inertia formula."
Thor read through the entire formula and couldn't find any logical inconsistencies at a glance.
His first thought was to show it to Camus, but he immediately dismissed the idea.
He and his senior, Byron, should study this inerting formula together.
We can't rely on Camus for everything, or he'll lose his habit of independent thinking.
"I haven't found any problems yet. Maybe it's because there wasn't enough time. Let me take it back and study it." Thor immediately cast a level 0 copying spell, making a copy of the parchment that had no magical properties.
This was a question Thor had never considered, and it immediately piqued his interest.
If the pollution in the no-man's-land could truly be inertized into almost harmless black powder, wouldn't that prevent oneself and those around us from being corrupted and polluted when the black tide actually erupts in the future?
He's been too busy lately, and even though he got hold of the haters a long time ago, he hasn't had time to study them in depth.
Suddenly, Byron slapped the parchment that Saul had copied.
Juice splashed everywhere.
"No!" Byron refused to study this topic with Thor. "You've just entered the second tier, and your strength is still unstable. I heard Lord Kira mention that entering the second tier is different from before; your knowledge system and understanding of the world need to be re-established. Before that, you'd better not participate in any research."
Seeing Byron's serious expression, Thor raised his hands in surrender. "Alright, alright, but let me treat your hands first. They're practically scalded from being out of your sight for just one day!"
