Chapter 492 Conspiracy

Chapter 492 Conspiracy

Kent's words made Saul look a little uneasy.

He put his hand down, turned around, and walked towards the stairwell.

"If Char is certain I can't return, then his attack will definitely target my residence. I need to go back and check."

Kent followed closely behind Thor.

"I'll go with you."

Morton deliberately lagged behind, walking behind Kent. The four wizards who had entered with Kent did not follow, seemingly each on their own mission.

Upon entering the stairwell, Thor didn't start running. He glanced at the thick tree branches blocking the left side of the passage and steadily began his ascent.

As he moved, the branches beside him grew in sync.

"Is this plant some kind of level 4 sorcery? Dean Pound is here too?"

"No. The Dean doesn't leave the academy easily. This is a spell scroll personally crafted by the Dean, made from the growth of a giant tree. While its power isn't as strong as when the Dean casts it himself, it's still enough to seal off the entire building."

What do you think the source of the pollution might be?

"I don't know. There are all sorts of things in this world, and we might only understand the real source of pollution after we see it."

Thor fell silent.

They walked up six floors in the stairwell, but there were still ten floors to go before Saul's room.

The spiral staircase seems endless, and the consistent view from top to bottom creates a sense of overlapping time and space.

"Wizard Thor, I wonder how Wizard Xia tricked you into going out to find him?" Kent suddenly asked.

"He said...you are secretly cultivating evil spirits to kill those who want to leave the city."

Kent laughed so hard his shoulders shook. "Hahaha, so it couldn't be me. If I wanted to cultivate evil spirits, I wouldn't need to do this. Aren't the naturally occurring evil spirits in this city enough for me?"

Thor remained silent.

Kent glanced at Morton, who had been cautiously watching him from behind, and then asked Thor, "Hmm, Char must have concocted a terrible scenario for you, tricking you into cooperating with his investigation of me to protect yourself, right?"

"More or less." Thor's attention seemed to be elsewhere than on Kent; his pace slowed, and even the branches growing around him had already passed him.

"I'm actually quite curious about how Char lies. Does he describe some scary or strange scenes? Like... people standing upside down or something?"

……

Meanwhile, Char and Julie are running frantically inside an underground waste treatment plant.

Julie was in a disheveled state, her skin no longer smooth as before.

She complained, "I shouldn't have believed you."

While keeping a wary eye on his surroundings, Char retorted to Julie, "Come on, you're different from Thor. You've lived here for seven or eight years. The only reason you agreed to come this time is because you've discovered something too!"

Julie bit her lip. "I don't know anything!"

After running for a few minutes, the two came to a dead end. There was no way to go up from there, and the rustling sound behind them was getting closer and closer.

Julie tossed her head of white hair, finally showing some anxiety. "Aren't you the best at running away? Think of something!"

"Strange, there used to be a small exit here." Xia ignored Julie and just stared blankly at the wall in front of him.

"How exactly did you scout this place beforehand?" Julie complained, while nervously glancing behind her.

"I didn't expect... Kent's methods to be so powerful." Xia's eyes darted around, as if he was thinking about how to escape.

He suddenly looked at Julie beside him and murmured, "Could it be that Saul didn't come this time because he sensed something? That shouldn't be the case. He's only been here a few months, how could he know more than me?"

"How much do you think Thor knows?"

"I think..." Xia was about to answer when he suddenly realized that the person who had just spoken was not Julie at all.

Julie was looking back at the way they had come with a horrified expression.

An old man with a full head of white hair, holding a wooden cane as tall as himself, slowly walked out of the passage and stood in front of Xia and Julie.

"Dean Pound?" Julie gasped in disbelief.

Char, on the other hand, didn't seem that surprised.

"Hmm, hello, Wizard Julie." Wizard Xia didn't seem too surprised. Did you already know that I was behind Kent?

Xia licked his dry lips, took two steps back, and pressed his back against the wall that had inexplicably lost its escape route.

"I don't know. At first, I just thought that even if Kent wanted a lot of evil spirits, given his status as the actual organizer of the Cleaners, he wouldn't need to secretly cultivate them. Evil spirits can't be absorbed directly, so he wouldn't need that many."

Xia looked at Dean Pound and gave a wry smile. "Now I understand. If it's the East Academy that needs evil spirits, then no amount of evil spirits would be enough."

Julie was so frightened that her hair was trembling.

She dared to join Char and secretly investigate the wizard Kent, but she dared not confront the second-tier wizard Pound.

She's not one of those crazy mentors in the Wizard Tower who actually dared to try to assassinate a second-tier wizard.

"There's no need for you to be so tense." Pound raised his hand, and a white rose suddenly bloomed at the tip of his wooden staff. "You are all honorary instructors of the academy, and I am not a murderer. Now that you have discovered this secret, then officially join Bydon Academy as instructors."

Julie felt a sense of relief. She secretly released her seven-colored aura, but there was no black representing murderous intent or gray representing deception on Dean Pound.

In other words, if she agrees to formally join Bydon Academy as a mentor, then she can survive.

To become a formal mentor, one must sign a contract. Other mentors keep the contents of the contract confidential, but the conditions within are clearly not lenient.

However, compared to death, temporarily losing one's freedom is still acceptable.

Julie immediately forced a smile. "That's great, Dean. I'm willing to join."

But Char wasn't so obedient.

"Dean Pound, we only discovered the place where Kent was raising evil spirits; we didn't realize anything was happening at the academy..."

Pound didn't give Char a chance to finish speaking, "Become a formal instructor at the academy, or try to run away?"

Xia's pleading expression immediately vanished. "I knew it! The entire scale and operations of the Archaeological City of Sterling are your schemes. Let me join? You think I didn't notice that even the formal instructors... Anyway, I don't care what you do, and I'm not playing along!"

As Char spoke, he kept one hand tightly gripping his collar.

As he finished speaking, he suddenly flashed a few times in front of his chest.

Dean Pound's expression darkened. He had just raised his wooden staff a fraction of an inch when he saw Xia suddenly glow all over. Then, as if burned to ashes by the light emanating from his body, Xia disappeared from the spot.

"A spatial teleportation array?" Pound murmured.

Julie was also dumbfounded. "He actually hid a teleportation array on his body? Isn't he afraid of attracting the monsters from the spatial rifts?"

"It's worth taking a low-probability risk of death for a high-probability one. Sometimes, I quite admire Char." Dean Pound looked at the spot where Char had disappeared without showing surprise or disappointment. "However, he forgot one thing."

"...What?" Julie crossed her arms, feeling that the dean was deliberately pausing to wait for her to ask a question.

"There's no use running away in the face of absolute power," Dean Pound said with a satisfied smile.
