Chapter 408 New Moon Calendar
Chapter 408 The New Moon Calendar...
"The candles of the Wizard's Tower will never go out."
The candlestick in Heywood's hand had been pulled from the wall.
"This used to be the first rule in the apprentice's handbook. Now it's the only rule: Never let the candle go out at night."
Thor approached the candlelight.
It got completely dark shortly after they entered the West Tower.
It was so fast it felt unnatural.
This made Saul feel that this was not the real world.
He looked around the messy room and felt a little suffocated.
"The atmosphere here gets really strange after nightfall." Thor tugged at his collar; the air was so oppressive that he felt a sense of suffocation.
It was as if the air in the room wasn't enough for two people to breathe.
After nightfall, Haywood became quiet.
He huddled in the corner, staring at the candlestick a meter away, as if afraid it would go out at any moment.
"I feel like someone is watching us," Thor said as he walked toward the door.
The main gate was a makeshift assembly of a door from another dormitory, and the gaps were quite large, allowing cold air to whistle in.
"Of course, there are many people." Heywood shifted, unusually responding to Thor, "Don't look around, let's wait until dawn."
But Thor wasn't as cautious as Haywood; he had no intention of staying in this illusion for a hundred years.
The key to breaking the illusion lies in breaking its rules.
Although the illusion was so real that Thor often doubted it, he was still more inclined to believe that this was not the future.
But if he stays here any longer, his perception of truth and falsehood will become increasingly blurred.
Thor now knows enough about this place, but he hasn't found enough points to break through the illusion.
"Perhaps the breakthrough is not inside the wizard tower."
Saul peered through the crack in the door.
The door faces a patch of grass covered with skulls.
The wind was still howling, and the dark green grass was blown down.
A pale head peeks out briefly, then is quickly submerged again.
As Thor looked around, he had a strange feeling that among those clusters of skulls, there was a flesh-and-blood human face hidden, peering through the crack in the door in front of him at the people in the room.
"Someone is watching me, and it's not my imagination." Thor suppressed the chills that ran down his spine and scanned every head that peeked out from under the trees, but still found nothing.
Thor slowly raised his head.
There was no moon tonight, but there were many stars. The starlight twinkled in the sky, somewhat different from the sky he remembered.
"Aren't these stars... a bit too densely packed?"
Thor squinted and looked at it more carefully.
As he looked at them, he became even more certain that these stars were not the stars he remembered.
There seems to be a small black dot in the middle of each of the stars here.
Each black dot was aligned with Thor's direction, like... the pupils of an eye.
Eye?!
Saul put his hand on the door, ready to go out.
"What are you going to do?" Haywood suddenly spoke from behind.
Thor turned around and saw that Haywood was also staring intently at him.
Only a tiny pupil is visible amidst a large expanse of white in the eye.
Just like those stars.
Thor laughed. "I'll go take a look."
"We must never stay in a dark place," Haywood said somberly.
"The stars outside are so bright, is it considered a place without light?"
Heywood suddenly paused, "Where are the stars outside?"
He seemed to suddenly realize something, and immediately pulled out more candles from the corner of the wall, not caring about the consumption, and lit them all.
His hands, holding the flint, trembled slightly as he lit the candle.
Seeing Saul still standing in the doorway, he said somewhat exasperatedly, "What are you standing there for? Come and help light the candles! You've attracted those resentful spirits! We need more candles to appease them!"
Thor initially didn't want to pay attention to Haywood; he was eager to examine the stars. But at that moment, he suddenly felt an even stronger sense of being watched.
A muffled shriek came from the crack in the door behind him. Thor whirled around and was shocked to find that the area outside the crack had turned completely dark; there was no grass, no head facing the wizard's tower, and no starry sky.
"Come here...come here quickly...staying in the dark...will kill you!" Haywood's voice behind him had become hoarse.
As soon as he finished speaking, Thor felt a dangerous killing intent, like an electric shock, rushing from his fingertips to the back of his spine.
Danger!
His intuition warned him to immediately back away.
But Thor stubbornly stood still, enduring the biting cold.
Then, he saw that the diary in his spiritual body had suddenly been opened.
[May 14th, 317th year of the lunar calendar]
You are looking at the scenery from behind the door.
People who enjoy the scenery
I'm watching you.
]
No death notification!
This is a crisis warning!
After reading the words in the diary, Thor instantly took three steps back and stood directly next to Haywood.
The intuitive sense of crisis immediately lessened, but it was not completely eliminated.
Moreover, this sense of crisis is intensifying over time!
Heywood had lit a whole bunch of candles on the floor and was still holding two in his hand, but the terror on his face hadn't faded at all.
"They're here! They're coming!"
"Who is it?" Thor turned his head to look at Haywood.
But Haywood just stared at the door, his scars twitching.
Unable to get an answer, Thor looked at the door again, only to find that the crack in the door had widened!
"No! It's not that the crack in the door is getting wider, it's that the door is getting smaller!" Thor felt a chill run through him. "Darkness is swallowing the door!"
A long-lost sense of terror coursed through his veins, yet Thor found a familiar feeling in this fear.
He suddenly calmed down.
His gaze fell on the diary again.
"The lunar calendar year is 317, ah, so now is definitely now!"
Thor deliberately delayed his retreat after sensing the crisis, waiting for the diary to issue a warning.
But the diary has dates on it!
"My initial analysis was correct; this is all an illusion, the effect of that black light's attack!"
"This illusion is not complicated and does not pose a clear danger. If I'm not mistaken, the darkness will not completely invade this room this time."
Thor wasn't as fearful as Haywood beside him, but he also didn't provoke the darkness again.
As expected, after a few minutes of confrontation between light and darkness, the shadow on the door slowly receded.
Heywood breathed a sigh of relief, and with great reluctance, he blew out the extra candles, leaving only three in case of emergency.
He then said to Saul in an even lower voice, "Don't explore or observe at night. If you bring in more contamination, we're all doomed."
Unfortunately, Thor, whose thoughts had just been confirmed, didn't listen.
"I guessed right. This illusion isn't primarily about lethal aggression. So the diary only provides a warning of danger, not a death sentence. But it takes advantage of people's suspicious nature. If it were someone else, after not finding a way out in a short time, they would increasingly doubt their own guesses; and when they see the correct logic hidden within the illusion of this world, they would increasingly doubt whether they have actually arrived a hundred years in the future."
"The more you doubt, the less likely you are to find a way out! You might even end up hypnotizing yourself!"
In the end, they will probably convince themselves that this is where they will be a hundred years from now, and then they will be left in the interlayer forever.
Having confirmed that this was indeed an illusion, Thor had a better idea of how to break the illusion.
Thor pondered, chin in hand. "This illusion should only extend about a hundred meters from the wizard's tower. If I want to leave, I'll probably face immediate danger. And those stars overhead are probably the eyes within the hidden layers. They are indeed very powerful."
There are two options now. One is to venture into the darkness and fight the corruption, but judging from the diary's warnings, the battle will likely be very difficult. The other is to kill Heywood here... kill the one who transmits this worldview.
Thor slowly turned his head to look at the dazed old Haywood.
The latter stared blankly at the candlelight.
