Chapter 31 This damned constitution

It's been a full month since I started school.

The new apprentices hadn't seen the outside sunlight for a whole month, and even Duke, who was the darkest-skinned, started to turn pale.

Not to mention Thor.

He spent his days engrossed in academic studies and dealing with corpses. His face became as pale as a dead person's, with dark circles under his eyes.

You can dress up as a ghost in the middle of the night without even needing makeup.

He has skipped his public classes for three consecutive days.

If it weren't for the fact that people can't stay in the morgue at night, he would have wanted to stay inside and never come out.

But today, his research has stalled, so he's out looking for new ideas.

"Grimm's Understanding of Body Modification" records four or five modification ideas, but does not specify what materials to use or how to modify them.

That makes sense; such knowledge cannot be casually shared with others.

It's either someone's trump card or the legacy of a certain power.

The book also states that even with a mature approach to body modification, there is still a high probability of death.

Finding a completely new method of transformation will not be possible without sacrificing hundreds or thousands of lives.

Thor knew several second-level apprentices who had all undergone witch body modification, but his "best" relationship was with his senior, Mark.

When Thor arrived at the lab, besides senior Mark, Angela was also there, but Duke was nowhere to be seen.

Angela saw Thor and gave a slightly embarrassed smile.

Thor nodded in response, but Angela seemed startled, her hands trembled, and she almost dropped the book in her hands.

The two were only acquainted with each other by nodding. Saul walked to Mark, the senior student at the back of the laboratory.

The latter seemed to be conducting some kind of experiment, or perhaps cooking, casually placing things into the crucible and stirring them with a wooden spatula.

Thor stood three meters away and observed for a while. He could only sigh that as expected of someone who majored in dark elemental magic, even the materials he put into the crucible looked so sinister.

After adding the last clump of what appeared to be hair or seaweed, Mark covered the crucible with a transparent glass lid and turned down the heat.

He turned his head and greeted Thor with a smile, "It's been a few days, you've improved quite a bit."

"Senior Mark," Thor stepped forward, "I have a few questions I'd like to ask you."

"Oh?" Mark casually took off his gloves and tossed them into the trash can at his feet. "You have magic crystals now?"

"Um."

"In which area?"

"Witch body..." Thor only said two words before stopping.

Mark paused, looked up at Angela in the distance, and said, "Angela, you should go home first today."

Angela didn't say anything, picked up her book and ran out, closing the laboratory door tightly behind her.

"Are you really planning to undergo witch body modification? This is usually an area that only second-level apprentices would get involved in."

"I took the test, and my current magic power is only 4. If I don't undergo the witch body modification, Instructor Kaz won't pass the test three months later."

After a month of meditation, Thor's magic power only increased by 1 joule. At this rate, it will take another six months to reach 10 joules.

But he only has two months left.

"Hmm..." Mark rested his chin on his hand, "Actually, since the mentor has already assigned the morgue work to you, he probably won't be so strict anymore."

"But the instructor never said anything about changing the test content." Thor didn't want to gamble.

While hardcover books may issue death warnings, they usually only make their presence known when a life-or-death crisis is imminent.

If you're in a desperate situation where death is inevitable no matter what you choose, then even if the hardcover book jumps out, it's useless.

Just like the night Thor almost died in the lab.

If it weren't for the appearance of the giant, Thor would not have escaped death.

Although the process was tragic, it taught Saul a valuable lesson.

Even in dire straits, there is always a glimmer of hope, so one's own efforts are still very important.

If Thor hadn't insisted on saving himself, he might never have lived to see Pinkie Pie pass by.

"There are other ways to increase magic power to 10 joules."

"But senior," Thor spread his hands, "I don't have that much money, nor enough credits, and most importantly, I don't have the time."

Mark stroked his chin. "Looks like you've made up your mind. Well then..."

He held out his hand to Thor. "2 credits, no magic crystals."

Just received 3 credits...

Thor let out a breath. "Deal. Shall we go to the registration room first?"

Mark withdrew his hand. "If it were someone else, that would be fine, but since it's you, I can pay for half an hour on credit."

Half an hour?

In other words, you exchange twenty days of hard work for half an hour of knowledge.

Mark sat down. "I remember you once copied a book about witch body modification, so you should already have some understanding of it. Now, what are your thoughts on modifying your own body?"

"The cheapest and most effective material I have on hand right now is corpse material. So my modification plan is to extract the parts of these materials that can effectively enhance elemental perception and magic power."

Mark chuckled. "No wonder you're starting to look more and more like a dead person."

He then adopted a slightly more serious tone, sitting up straight and saying, "The fact that you were chosen to work in the morgue means you're quite sensitive to spirits. If you use materials from corpses to modify yourself, do you know what will happen?"

Thor's eyes widened.

"You'll easily stumble upon the supernatural, and those ghosts will be happy to come looking for you."

So it means you're prone to seeing ghosts?

Are there many ghosts and monsters in the Wizard's Tower?

"Scared? Haha..." Mark laughed as he looked at Thor's hesitant expression. "Not much, and most of them have various restrictions. Because the ghosts in the Wizard Tower are basically created by wizards and high-ranking wizard apprentices using certain witchcraft. But even so, you might accidentally get into all sorts of trouble. Most ghosts are very lonely, and they will desperately seek out ordinary people who can see and hear them, but who are not dangerous to them."

"I understand. As long as I can become stronger, I can fight against the monsters." Thor raised his fist, one of which, a skeletal hand, was particularly conspicuous.

Mark was not pleased with the boy's small act of courage; he gave Saul a final piece of advice.

"Always maintain a sense of awe, Thor. Fear comes from the unknown, terror is born from the unknown, and the unknown is endless."

After giving his warning, he didn't try to persuade Saul again, but instead began to explain the parts of the corpse material that were suitable for use in witchcraft.

Because he couldn't share his existing knowledge of body modification with Saul—Mark didn't know anything else, and Saul couldn't afford it—he emphasized some precautions, such as which types of materials couldn't be mixed together, as that would definitely cause problems; and which reactions in the experiment might mean endangering life.

Finally, Mark recommended two more materials for the main body—skin and bones.

These two types are larger and easier to inscribe with runes, which helps Thor control them and makes them safer.

Thor should avoid materials like brains and eyes, as they are generally difficult to handle without the strength of a third-class apprentice.

"Like me..." Mark raised his right hand, a crack appeared in his palm, and a bright red tongue, more than a meter long, emerged from it, stretched out in front of Thor's eyes, as if wanting to lick it.

"I spent a lot of money to exchange for a high-success-rate witch body modification formula in the tower, and then combined it with my own physique to modify it. Moreover, at that time, I was already a second-level apprentice."
