Chapter 259 Grave Array

Chapter 259 Grave Array

Following Thor's instructions, the driver turned onto the small road leading to Sailtown.

After half a day, the walls of Mofan Town and the rooftops of some towering buildings came into view.

The coachman reined in his horse and slowed down. "Sir, Mofan Town is just ahead. Should I drive straight in or stop outside?"

"Stay in the woods and wait for me, just like last time."

Thor figured his trip to Mossport Town wouldn't take too long, probably only half a day, so he had the driver wait outside.

Suddenly, the driver stared wide-eyed out of the woods and pounded on the carriage door in alarm. "Sir, sir, look ahead!"

Upon hearing this, Thor immediately pushed open the car window and looked out.

The next second, his brows furrowed tightly.

In front of the woods, there used to be a field. When Saul last came, his fellow villager Ada was tilling the soil in the field.

Now, the once-paved land is dotted with rows of small mounds, each about half a person's height.

The small mound looked like an overturned bowl, or even more like a tomb without a tombstone.

At first glance, the small mounds are arranged neatly, forming a regular square formation.

A quick glance revealed several hundred.

"Don't come any closer, just wait here." As soon as he finished speaking, Thor darted out of the carriage like a gust of wind.

He moved quickly, his grey cloak fluttering in the wind. The hood fell down, revealing his short black hair and light grey skin.

It was already midsummer, and even the morning breeze felt warm on people.

But now Thor could only feel a bone-chilling cold.

As he stepped onto the ridge, several small stones rolled and fell onto the ground below, making a "clattering" sound.

The land was cracked like stone, and not a single weed could be seen.

As Saul stood at the edge of the field, he immediately sensed a strong aura of death emanating from it.

These small mounds were indeed graves.

This once vibrant field was transformed into a graveyard in just a few months!

Those fragments of souls that scatter in the air were as conspicuous as will-o'-the-wisps in Thor's eyes.

Thor narrowed his eyes, his cold gaze sweeping across the entire cemetery.

"After I left, a massacre took place here. Not only that, they also shattered the souls of the dead. Were they afraid that someone skilled in dark magic would torture the souls of the dead?"

There is just one thing that is rather strange.

As far as Thor knows, destroying the souls of ordinary people does not require any special magic circle.

Therefore, these neatly arranged tombs appear unusually eerie.

Not only are all the burial mounds the same size and height, but they are also arranged in a straight line, forming a square array.

However, Thor could not find a trace of magical energy within this seemingly eerie array of tombs.

"Is this based on a magic circle or a sacrificial ritual? Have the barbarians returned? Or is someone else deliberately putting on a show to fool outsiders?" Thor sneered, then looked at the town not far away.

The town's gates were tightly shut, and the lazy soldiers who used to stand guard at the entrance were nowhere to be seen; they had probably become part of the graveyard.

Before he arrived, Thor had a vague thought that something might happen in Sailtown.

He just thought that if the person who secretly used the Grinding Fruit wanted to keep the secret and not alert others, then they shouldn't have moved Grinding Sail Town.

Or is the secret in Mofan Town actually more important than the fact that someone is eyeing the Mofan Fruit?

"I wonder how Ada and Penny are doing. I remember telling them to leave here as soon as possible." Thor was a little worried about the two of them.

There's the somewhat dull Ada, and the adorable girl Penny, trapped in a cocoon of nightmares.

For ordinary people, if they want to live more peacefully in this world, it's best not to have too much involvement with wizards.

Although they were no longer on the same path, Thor still did not want his fellow countryman who had once taken him in to die tragically in this place.

However, reason told Thor that if a wizard really wanted to destroy the entire town of Mossport, those two ordinary people probably wouldn't be able to escape...

"Should I just leave and pretend I didn't see anything, or...?"

Thor glanced again at the gates of Sailtown. The gates were tightly shut, and behind the back door was utter silence.

There was no smoke rising from chimneys in the sky above the town, nor the sound of insects chirping or birds singing.

"Perhaps we can still find clues about the Grinding Fruit in the town," he convinced himself.

However, instead of heading to the town, Thor jumped down into the field and went straight to a grave.

He carefully cast a detection spell, but the grave showed no reaction.

"Even if there were any magical arrays or sacrificial rituals set up here in the past, they are now abandoned. There is not a trace of magical energy left."

After the inspection was completed, Thor immediately squatted down, stuck his hands into the soil, dug out a large patch of grave soil, and placed it aside.

He wanted to open the grave and see what was underneath.

"Sir, let me do this job." The coachman, who was standing at a distance watching on tiptoe, saw Thor start digging a grave with his bare hands and shouted loudly.

Thor didn't even turn his head; he simply raised his arm and waved to signal the driver not to come over, then continued turning the soil.

After the modification, although his skin had returned to a human appearance, his strength and resilience far surpassed those of ordinary warriors.

Digging a grave by hand is easy and faster than using a shovel.

As for why witchcraft is not used, it is because the energy released by witchcraft might destroy the secrets within.

A few minutes later, with Thor’s careful movements, a grave was hollowed out, revealing a package inside.

The only material used to wrap it was a tattered garment, stained with bright red blood.

"The bloodstains are bright red, just like they were freshly drawn. This tomb array is indeed somewhat unusual."

Judging from the size of the package, it certainly doesn't contain a complete corpse.

Thor frowned as he opened the package.

Inside were several pieces of meat so fresh they could be thrown onto a market cutting board.

Saul turned the pieces of meat over with the cloth through his hands.

An eye was found beneath several pieces of meat whose ownership was unknown.

"Dismemberment?"

It's becoming more and more like the methods of barbarians.

Saul got up and checked the other graves again.

He randomly selected graves to dig up, some near the center and some on the edge.

These graves all contained a simple garment wrapped around some pieces of flesh.

Saul found three hands in one of the graves. And judging from the shape of the hands, they belonged to three different people.

Saul is now fairly certain that the pieces of flesh in each grave mound do not belong to the same person.

They not only dismembered the bodies, but also buried them together.

Saul rewrapped the remains in his clothes and put them back in the grave, but did not immediately cover them with soil.

Thor returned to the ridge and remained silent for a long time before raising his hand and summoning the Mage's Hand to cover the loose soil he had dug up back up.

"There were no witchcraft tools or magic circles hidden under the graves. Could it be that someone was just bored and created an art exhibition using everyone's corpses?"

With nothing more to be found in the grave, Thor decided to head to Sailtown.

After cleaning the mud and sand off his body and hands, Thor put on his hood and slowly walked towards the town.

However, just as Thor was a dozen meters away from the town gate, the gate of Mosail Town was suddenly pushed open a crack with a "creak".

An old man poked half his body out from inside.

The man was disheveled and filthy, but Saul recognized him the instant he saw him.

"An old madman?"

Thor strode forward, only to be surprised when the other person suddenly stretched out a withered, thin arm and pushed him forward.

"Go back now," he said. "Don't come in."

Thor, of course, wouldn't let him take everything so easily.

Instead of retreating, he pressed on, "You old madman, you're still alive? Where are the others? Ada and Penny?"

The old madman shuddered. He looked up at Thor with a complex expression, his eyes gradually turning mad.

"I told you we couldn't trade with barbarians, we couldn't, we couldn't... The village was destroyed, everyone died... The village was destroyed, everyone died..."

Before Saul could say anything more, he suddenly darted back inside and slammed the door shut.

Thor walked to the city gate, placed his hand on the gate and was about to push it open when he suddenly heard the sound of a surging tide.

"Splash... splash... splash..."

Mofan Town is located in the northern desert, a place with scarce water resources. Moreover, Thor remembers that there is no river in the town at all.

Where does the sound of surging tides come from?
