Chapter 14 Happy and Joyful
Chapter 14 Happy and Joyful
Saul's first tutoring session turned into a spring cleaning session.
Fortunately, Thor already had work experience and quickly got the hang of it.
Mark's mood improved when he saw how meticulous and serious Saul was at work. While tidying up, he told Saul some things he needed to pay attention to in his studies.
Two hours passed just like that. Mark had to leave, so he handed over the finishing touches to Saul.
"In a moment, you will empty the trash into that yellow trash can. Make sure it's yellow. If it's not yellow, put it in a bag, seal it, and deal with it tomorrow."
Thor glanced at the yellow trash can next to the lab door, which was taller than his chest, and nodded seriously.
"Alright." Mark pulled out a chair, stretched out his legs, and sat down. "Now you have your chance. Five minutes to answer, then I have to go on a date."
Thor quickly asked the question he had prepared beforehand.
"Senior Mark, how do mental strength and magical power affect the learning of witchcraft?"
Mark wasn't surprised by Thor's question. Listening to his mentor Kaz, he realized that this junior's magical talent was probably really bad, but his mental talent was quite good.
Perhaps it was also out of resentment.
"According to book knowledge, both are equally important. But as a wizard who values practice, magic is the medium through which we transform knowledge into witchcraft."
"Let me use a rough analogy. The elemental ions in the outside world are like a river a hundred meters away from you. Your mental talent is your running speed, while your magical talent is the tool you use to move the water."
Mark gestured with his hand.
"Ordinary wizard apprentices usually carry water in buckets," he gestured, narrowing his expression, "but you're using a bowl. That's why your growth will be much slower, understand?"
Thor immediately replied, "Then I'll make a few more trips."
Mark shook his head. "It's not just that. In the wizarding world, there's almost no time when you don't use magic. You cast spells, make tools, draw magic circles, construct runes, and all of this requires you to carry two bowls of water, or even a bucket, at once. What if your bowls can't handle it?"
Thor lowered his head, revealing a sliver of his left fingertip. "Senior Mark, isn't there a way to turn this small bowl in my hand into a large bucket? Like, perhaps through magical transformation?"
Mark also caught a glimpse of Thor's left hand, but such a degree of physical modification meant nothing to him.
"Of course there are, but almost no first-level apprentices can withstand them. The witchcraft modifications that the mentor just mentioned require at least a second-level apprentice to attempt."
He raised his hands, and at the same time, his palms split open like huge mouths, opening and closing repeatedly, as if trying to swallow or lick.
Two bright red tongues kept probing and approaching Thor.
Thor gritted his teeth, forcing himself not to instinctively back away. At the same time, his left hand was ready to strike at any moment.
Just as the atmosphere in the room turned cold, Mark suddenly withdrew his hand.
"Don't touch anything, this is a laboratory."
He spoke with a calm expression, as if he had only intended to scare Saul.
"Okay, Senior Mark." Thor also lowered his left hand and asked, still unwilling to give up, "Is there any modification that a Level 1 Apprentice can do? I'm afraid I only have three months."
Mark stretched and stood up. "Then you'll have to gamble with your life. For example, go to the library and look at the textbooks that the second-level apprentices will use."
Saul could tell that Mark was about to leave; he didn't have much time left to ask questions.
He quickly followed Mark towards the door. "May I borrow the books for the second-level apprentices?"
Mark strode to the door and opened it with one hand.
"Any book in the public library can be borrowed." He turned around, revealing a strange smile. "The library never stops lower-ranking wizards from reading books by higher-ranking wizards; they're boring too."
After saying that, Mark left the lab and closed the door behind him.
Thor stood at the door, head bowed in thought: "A gamble with my life?"
It would be impossible for Thor to meet Kaz's requirements in three months through meditation alone.
He glanced at the hardcover book floating silently on his left shoulder. "This is something I'm good at."
Just then, the lab door suddenly opened again, and Mark poked half his face out. "Remember to pack your things before you leave."
"Understood, senior."
Thor was startled, but then looked at Mark's half-face and shrank back.
The door closed.
Thor was left alone in the room.
I guess so……
Saul turned around and looked around. He didn't have much work left to do: simple tidying up, emptying the trash, and checking that all the cabinets were closed tightly.
Saul walked around the laboratory.
He pushed the chair Mark had pulled out back and scooped up the trash under the table, throwing it into the yellow trash can.
The yellow trash can was dark inside, and the bottom was nowhere in sight. It didn't look like a can; it looked more like a passageway.
Thor didn't look at it for long, and immediately put the lid back on after emptying the trash.
"It always feels uncomfortable to be in a lab all by myself." Saul touched his arm, as if he could feel goosebumps popping up from under his skin.
Saul found several more doodles on the table in the middle of the lab. Things had been drawn on the paper, but they were completely covered by messy black lines, and nothing could be seen.
The paper was crumpled, as if it had been thrown away and then picked up and flattened.
"Were these sheets of paper here just now?"
Saul carefully swept it into the bucket, then turned around to prepare to go through the trouble of emptying it again.
However, just as Thor reached out to lift the lid of the trash can, the trash can turned red in an instant, right in front of Thor.
Thor's hand abruptly stopped in mid-air and slowly withdrew.
He pretended he hadn't seen anything, turned around, sealed the bucket, and put it under the table.
He continued his inspection, walking to a row of cabinets at the far end of the laboratory.
For some reason, he suddenly remembered the walking diagram of the human-monster he had used for meditation that day.
According to the layout in the picture, Thor is currently standing at the lowest monster position.
He quickly shook his head to shake off the ominous thought, but when he took another step, he stepped on something.
He looked down and almost jumped up.
It turned out to be the same wooden puppet they used when testing the talents of new recruits.
The puppet's eyes were clearly two empty holes, yet Thor felt as if a gaze was watching him from within them.
"...Please make sure there are no clutters on the floor of the locker area when you leave. I will clean it first. If you find something on the floor when you leave, don't panic. Find a locker around you that contains the same item, then pick it up and put it back. Make sure to close the locker door properly!"
Saul recalled Mark's instructions.
He turned his head and saw that the cabinet next to him was slightly ajar.
Through the glass cabinet, you can see... piles of puppets lying haphazardly.
"Okay, we're at your house now."
Saul tilted his head slightly, avoiding looking directly into the puppet's eyes, and bent down to pick it up.
When his fingertips touched the puppet's rough, slightly cool surface...
"Splash..."
A sound that only Thor could hear rang out, and the hardcover book flew to Thor, its pages flipping rapidly before finally settling on a new blank page.
[May 26th, 314th year of the lunar calendar]
Mark kept you behind to clean the lab.
This is really not an easy job.
You poke your foot at a naughty puppet and prepare to throw it back where it belongs.
You open the cabinet door, pick up the puppet's head, and carefully put it inside.
You were lifted by the head and carefully lowered down.
You lie on top of your companion's body, watching the glass cabinet door close, while outside, Thor hums a beautiful song and happily runs away.
