Chapter 118 The Vanishing Cocoon

Chapter 118 The Vanishing Cocoon

The matter of evil spirits is a bit strange. Logically speaking, an unactivated sensor is just a useless mirror and shouldn't be able to see evil spirits.

But Byron and Nick didn't think Thor was mistaken.

In any case, whether Thor saw a hallucination or not, there are only two possible outcomes: the existence of an evil spirit or the non-existence of an evil spirit.

"This is the entrance to the Valley of Fallen Hands; there shouldn't be any overly powerful evil spirits here." Nick activated his sensor and checked the surroundings again.

No spirits were found.

"But Thor, why did you put the sensor on the ground?" Nick looked up curiously, his lips twitching slightly. "Is it because you're too short to reach it?"

"Pfft!"

Saul immediately turned angrily to look at Byron, but only saw Byron's calm face and innocent eyes.

Thor's gaze shifted to Byron's throat; he swore it had just been split open!

However, his height is not something he can solve right now, although he firmly believes that he can grow to 1.8 meters tall.

"Oh, right." Thor got back to the point. He looked around again to make sure there were no more headless monsters, then whispered to the two of them, "I just saw a lot... monsters with only heads and two legs. But they disappeared before you got back."

Thor lowered his voice again, "I didn't dare to alert them. Do you know what kind of monster that is?"

He looked up and saw that Byron's face was starting to twitch.

On the other side, Nick's pupils shrank, and his eyes revealed obvious fear.

"Slap!" Nick suddenly slapped himself. He looked up, his expression somewhat ferocious. "Those... monsters, they've all disappeared now?"

Seeing that Nick was not in a good mood, Thor quickly nodded, "They're all gone, otherwise I wouldn't have dared to ask you guys."

"I'll be alone for a while." Nick suddenly stood up and crawled into his tent.

A short while later, a groan could be heard coming from inside the tent, as if someone was trying to cover their mouth with their hand but could still let out a few sounds.

Byron fared better, his throat flaring, "Thank goodness you didn't alert them. Those were headless monsters; they're usually only found deep within the Valley of the Fallen Hands."

Seeing the confusion in Thor's eyes, Byron sighed, "I didn't tell you before because the more people who know about the existence of the Headless Monsters, the more likely they are to encounter them. I didn't expect you to still run into one. If you attract their attention, they might turn you into a Headless Monster too. And you yourself might even forget that you were once a normal person."

So that's how it is. No wonder Byron and Nick didn't mention such a dangerous monster at all.

How many monsters did you see?

"...They're everywhere."

"Hiss—" Byron gasped. He immediately stood up and walked to Nick's tent. "Nick, you need to vent. We'd better get out of here now."

Nick inside gave a muffled response.

Byron returned and instructed Saul, "Don't disassemble the equipment, just move it to the car and we'll move to another location."

Fearing the head monster might return at any moment, Byron and Thor only took the essentials, abandoning the tent altogether.

Aside from some books, Saul didn't bring much with him. But as he picked up his backpack and started to walk out of the tent, he suddenly froze.

Where is the cocoon of the Nightmare Butterfly?

Thor was observing the cocoon that looked like a small silver ball when he suddenly saw the human-headed monster.

After that, because of his nervousness, he didn't pay attention to the calluses on his hands.

Looking back now, I can't remember at all whether I put the cocoon away or not.

Thor quickly searched through all his pockets and then lay on the ground looking around, but he couldn't find the small silver ball.

"It couldn't have been lost. Could it have fallen to the ground and been picked up by the headless monster?"

Thor simply sat down, closed his eyes, and began to recall.

"No, the moment I saw the human-headed monster, I stopped feeling that I was holding something in my hand, which is why I didn't think about the Nightmare Butterfly's cocoon."

Thor clenched his fist and slowly opened his eyes. "Yes, the cocoon disappeared in an instant."

After becoming a wizard apprentice, one's memory is enhanced by the spiritual body, so one will not forget where one left something just moments ago.

He can even recall the small things he has done by focusing on his memories.

Therefore, Thor was certain that he hadn't accidentally lost the cocoon; rather, the cocoon had vanished in an instant.

In that instant, he didn't realize it at all, and only after calming down did he realize something was wrong.

"Sol!"

Outside, Senior Byron had already started urging them on.

Thor glanced at the tent with resentment. "Did it escape on its own, or was it stolen by some other being?"

Damn it, he hasn't even started researching it yet!

But it's no longer safe here.

Even Byron, a senior apprentice at the third level, was afraid.

Thor cannot let his guard down.

He left the tent in a hurry, his heart filled with regret.

At this moment, Nick finally recovered from his emotional breakdown and rushed back to the wooden spider with his belongings. However, his hands were covered in bruises, and it was unclear whether he had pinched himself.

Thor already knew that Nick would deliberately suppress his emotional changes because he studied witchcraft related to emotions.

However, if one cannot help but laugh or feel afraid, extreme emotional outbursts may occur.

For example, laughing so hard you almost faint, or being so scared you vomit.

This side effect is actually quite frightening. While it might be manageable under normal circumstances, in extreme situations, a lack of composure could lead to serious danger.

Saul speculated that this might be one of the reasons why Nick had been unable to advance to Level 3.

The wood spider activated and quickly left the no-longer-safe camp.

When Thor looked out the rear window, he could vaguely see a dark mass of heads at the foot of the mountain.

He looked away, pretending he hadn't seen anything.

Thor was facing the mirror of the Soul Wave Perception Device.

Because of the rush, they didn't disassemble the equipment, but instead carried it directly onto the wooden spider intact.

This caused the originally spacious carriage to become crowded, and the three people had to sit close to the carriage wall.

As soon as Thor saw the mirror, he remembered the dark figure that had appeared in it before, and he felt uncomfortable, so he simply turned his head away.

However, the instant he looked away, he suddenly seemed to see a silvery light.

He immediately turned his gaze back.

His face was reflected in the mirror in a blurry and distorted way, but no silver light was visible.

"Could I have misread it?"

Thor brought his face closer so that his distorted features became clearer in the mirror.

But I still couldn't see anything wrong.

Just as Thor was wondering about moving back, he suddenly noticed that his left eye had flashed.

Thor paused, glancing at the two people around him.

Because of the obstruction of the sensor, they shouldn't be able to see Thor's face.

Thor then squinted his eyes and entered a semi-immersive meditative state.

This time, Thor finally saw it.

In his left eye, a small silver sphere appeared. The sphere was covered with starlight, shimmering brightly.

Thor resisted the urge to rub his eyes and slowly lowered his head.

The cocoon of that nightmare butterfly actually flew into his eye on its own!
