Chapter 100 For the Town
Chapter 100 For the Town
Thor looked around and hid inside an empty cupboard.
There was no grain, oil, or food in the cupboard; it was clearly just a decorative item to deceive people.
Thor sat inside, cramped and hesitant.
To prevent fluctuations in his mental energy from alerting those below, he didn't even meditate, but simply idly counted the cracks on the cabinet door to pass the time.
About two or three hours later, the hidden door behind the stove was finally opened, and two people crawled out.
Judging from the footsteps, there were two people.
They were still talking when they came out.
"...I'll leave tomorrow's arrangements to you."
"Don't worry, as long as there's a lot of stuff, those are minor issues."
"But that person will be back in a couple of days."
"It doesn't matter."
"Yes, congratulations, sir."
The sound of the two people's footsteps gradually faded away, leaving Thor completely bewildered inside the cupboard.
What are they saying?
When others eavesdrop, don't they usually manage to overhear key information easily?
Why did he hear nothing?
But upon reflection, Thor realized that it wasn't entirely without its gains.
What will happen tomorrow?
One party resolves the issue, and the other party receives compensation.
There's another thing to congratulate you on.
Saul waited a while longer, but when no one returned, he ran out of the cupboard.
Perhaps the two people in front of him had already gone far away, because he didn't see anyone else outside the house, not even the guards.
Thor circled the open space where the Grinding Fruit was planted again, and before dawn, he turned back to Ada's residence.
Ada, who had been busy all day, slept soundly and had no idea that his tenant had been wandering around outside all night before returning.
The next morning, Ada got up early to start a fire and cook, and even woke up Thor to help.
The meal was very simple, just the most ordinary green steamed buns and wild vegetables.
The earthen stove was inside the house, and when firewood was burned, smoke swirled around it.
They left Penny a lunch and then hurriedly left.
To Saul's surprise, Ada refused his offer to take him to town to look for work.
"I saw you were quite strong yesterday. Why don't you come with me to farm for the mayor? There's not much land here, so it's a good job. After two years, you can build your own small house outside town."
Saul immediately shook his head and refused, saying he couldn't do it.
Ada countered Saul's question: "So what can you do? There's not really a shortage of workers in town."
Thor didn't say anything, he just wanted to wander around the town by himself first.
Ada thought that Sol was just unhappy because he didn't want to farm, but he didn't say anything.
He took Saul to the neighborhood where he could find work.
"Anyway, I'm just here to get you to the place. Whether you find work or not is up to you. I still need to go and till the land later."
But before the two even reached the job posting, they stumbled upon a lively scene.
They came to a fairly orderly street and saw a house surrounded by people.
The people standing three or four deep made Saul realize that the population of this place was quite large.
Cries and screams came from the crowd. Ada, who hadn't planned to watch the commotion, looked over warily and pulled Thor away, wanting to leave as quickly as possible.
Thor, however, felt that this matter was not as simple as just a lively spectacle.
Taking advantage of his thinness and strength, he squeezed to the very back of the crowd.
Ada wanted to go to Lasor, but found that the other party had disappeared in a flash.
He was too embarrassed to force his way in, so he had to stand on tiptoe to look inside, his brows furrowed, looking somewhat annoyed.
"If it weren't for your strength..." he muttered, wondering if he regretted bringing Thor home.
At this moment, Thor, who had squeezed inside, finally saw the reason for the commotion.
At the very center of the crowd was a weeping couple.
Beside them stood an elderly man with a few strands of white hair, offering words of comfort with a smile.
Captain Jeff, whom I met yesterday, stood expressionless opposite the couple, his hand on his curved sword at his waist.
Behind Jeff, two soldiers were supporting a girl who was limp and unable to stand up.
The girl looked to be about fifteen or sixteen years old, wearing a blue checkered skirt. Among the ordinary people, she was quite pretty.
Diagonally opposite Thor, a man dressed in a black robe and wearing a hood stood there with his hands in his sleeves.
There was a large empty area around him, with not a single townsman watching the spectacle.
"Oh, how can I explain it to you? This is a matter of life and death for the town, and it's not a bad thing!" the old man said, trying to comfort the weeping couple.
Saul looked at the couple who were crying and collapsed on the ground, and then at the girl who looked terrified and helpless. He couldn't imagine what good things could happen.
But the onlookers clearly didn't think so.
A woman carrying a basket shouted unhappily, "Why are you crying? That's a big deal for the whole town! If I had a daughter now, I'd happily send her over there."
Saul recognized her as Aunt Jenny, who had been extremely enthusiastic the day before.
The weeping woman lowered her hands from her face and said sorrowfully, "But we only have one daughter, Minnie!"
Someone nearby immediately chimed in, "Can't you just have another one later? Are you going to jeopardize the whole town for the sake of your one daughter?"
These words immediately sparked a flurry of discussion among the onlookers, who all condemned the couple for being selfish and cruel.
The couple felt suffocated by the atmosphere and were speechless for a moment.
The old man patted the man on the shoulder, a smile spreading across his face.
"So you've agreed? Good, I don't want to force anyone. But only Minnie truly meets the Wizard's requirements. It's her honor, and it's also our town's honor. After all, the Sacred Fruit is the lifeblood of the entire town. If production continues to decrease, it will incur the wrath of the Wizard's Tower, and none of us will survive."
The old man's words were well said. As soon as he finished speaking, the people around him began to blame the couple for disregarding the lives of others.
Is the life and death of an entire town less important than that of a little girl?
His wife was speechless and could only collapse on the ground, weeping bitterly.
The husband's legs went weak, and he knelt on the ground. Summoning courage from who-knows-where, he grabbed the old man's hand and cried out, "But mayor, we've sacrificed so many girls over the years, and the sacred fruit yield hasn't recovered! Is this method...?"
The man was halfway through his sentence when the wizard apprentice, who had been standing silently, let out a cold snort.
This cold snort was quite something; the performer in the center of the stage and everyone watching instinctively covered their ears.
The two townspeople closest to the man even had blood trickle from their ears, which flowed out of their ear canals.
Thor covered his ears along with the people around him, but after he lowered his head, he rolled his eyes.
"That coughing spell was too scattered in its effect. Doesn't he know how to use his mental power to guide it?"
The best performer on set was Captain Jeff. But even he had a contorted expression, only managing to keep his hands from covering his ears.
This shock silenced everyone present, and even the couple dared not cry out loud anymore.
So the girl was taken away, leaving the couple with only a bag of money.
Even after the excitement subsided, the crowd lingered for a long time.
Someone stepped forward to comfort them, saying that at least the town mayor had given them some compensation, and they wouldn't have to worry about making a living for the next few years.
Aunt Jenny smiled and stepped forward to offer her congratulations, then, like someone with experience, gave the couple advice on how to use the money.
As the crowd gradually dispersed, Ada finally found Thor hiding among them.
With a dark expression, he dragged Saul out and pulled him to the side of the road.
"You really love watching the show? If you hadn't been lucky enough to be far away from that lord, your ears would probably be injured too."
Bonus chapter! Okay, that's it, that's all.
