Chapter 90 Night Raid
Chapter 90 Night Raid
"Dorigare?" Geralt had never heard of this name.
Dandelion chuckled and said:
"Yes, Master Dorrigare, a very interesting person."
"He advocated for the balance of all things, and that humans should not interfere with any creatures in nature, including water ghosts, ghouls, and evil spirits, all of which were within his protection."
"An extreme endangered animal conservationist should appear in my poems as the villain in the story. How interesting, haha."
Geralt was speechless. It's true that there are all kinds of birds in a big forest. Without a doubt, as a Witcher whose profession is to hunt monsters, this must be one of the professions that this mage hates the most.
He glanced at the mage still chattering outside the king's tent, and quickly pulled Dandelion into Yennefer's tent to avoid being caught by the guy and getting entangled in another verbal battle, which was too troublesome.
However, one has to admire the current status of mages and warlocks. Even when facing kings and nobles, they have no fear. With the most powerful warlock brotherhood in the northern continent backing them up, even the kings of various countries and the lords of their fiefdoms have to give them some face. They cannot be judged like ordinary people, with a crime arbitrarily fabricated against them.
The two men continued drinking in the tent until Yennefer returned and chased the two slightly drunk men out of her tent.
The journey was about to begin, and the sorceress had to pack her luggage. As a lady, she had quite a lot of luggage to carry.
Geralt didn't care about this. He and Dandrian went to the haystack in the stable, arm in arm, to continue drinking. It was a quiet place where no one would bother them. Even though it smelled of horse manure all around, it made him feel more comfortable than the hostile or contemptuous looks.
Although King Niedamir was only the king of the small country of Kangon, he was quite arrogant. After preparing to set off, he spent more than an hour just packing up the supplies for the encampment, filling a full twelve wagons.
Including the accompanying dragon-hunting squad members, soldiers, and members of the Holopol reconnaissance team scouting ahead of the road, the total number was approximately 150.
The group formed a large procession and entered the Grand Castello Mountains in a grand manner. Guided by a local guide, they climbed from the foot of the mountain to the mountainside, which took about six or seven hours. They finally found an open space to set up camp and rest after sunset.
They had traveled about a third of the way to their destination, the Green Dragon's lair.
Leaving aside the various encounters along the way, in the early hours of the second day, a figure dressed in black, almost completely blending into the darkness, quietly slipped into Yennefer's tent.
The newcomer was none other than Wayne, the Witcher.
He originally intended to look for Geralt in the tent, but instead of the famous white wolf Geralt, he only saw a large white dog lying next to a wooden post in the center of the tent, seemingly taking a nap.
The large dog seemed quite alert. As soon as Wayne pulled back the tent flap, it reacted, immediately standing up and staring intently at Wayne at the door, as if it were about to bark and pounce at any moment.
To avoid waking up the people around them, the big white dog was kept quiet.
Without a second thought, Wayne instantly unleashed an Axii sign, and the big white dog immediately rolled its eyes and fell unconscious.
Just as he was considering whether to knock the dog unconscious, the big white dog, with its unwavering will, suddenly awoke from its coma, opened its mouth, and spoke in Geralt's voice:
"Don't do anything, Wayne, it's me."
Wayne's mind went blank for a moment. He looked at the big white dog on the ground in shock, then at the sorceress sleeping soundly not far away. He thought to himself, "What kind of play is this? You guys are really something else."
Geralt was also a little embarrassed. If he could, he really didn't want to make such a fool of himself in front of his good brother. However, Wayne's appearance meant that he had something important to discuss with him, so he had no choice but to reveal himself.
"Let's talk outside, without waking Yennefer; she has a bad temper."
Fortunately, Wayne was quick to understand. He only paused for a few seconds before realizing what was happening and moved aside to let Geralt climb out first.
It was the early hours of the morning, and everyone was fast asleep except for a few night guards who were still dozing off.
Under the cover of night, the man and the dog arrived at a secluded spot a few hundred meters from the camp and began to talk quietly, sharing the information they had with each other.
Wayne didn't hide anything and told Geralt everything about Borch, the green dragon, and the young dragon, including Borch's request and his thoughts.
He believed that if it were Geralt, this righteous and principled witcher, he wouldn't oppose what Geralt was about to do.
The big white dog sat on the ground, its brow furrowed like a human's, and then asked:
"In other words, your current goal is to drive away all the ordinary people, and preferably also King Nidamir and his soldiers."
"Leave only those who are obsessed with slaying dragons, and let them have a fair duel with Borchi on the mountaintop?"
Wayne nodded. In his view, the soldiers and the citizens of Hollober were all victims coerced by those in power.
Even if they succeed in slaying the dragon, they won't gain anything. In fact, if they fight the dragon, they will be the first to perish. This group of people is just a bunch of pitiful creatures, and there is no need to fight them to the death.
Geralt thought for a moment, then nodded and said:
"Okay, I will cooperate with your actions."
"However, you must remember that you'd better not reveal your identity as a Witcher, and also avoid causing unnecessary casualties to the Golden Dragon."
"After you've finished your business, it's best to get Borch and his family out of here as soon as possible. The more the news about the dragon spreads, the more greedy hunters and countless mercenaries driven mad by wealth will be attracted."
"Don't worry, I will."
Wayne waved goodbye to Geralt, then quickly disappeared into the darkness.
Geralt watched Wayne's departing figure, a helpless expression on his dog face. He sighed, then quickly ran back into Yennefer's tent on all fours.
Tonight is destined to be anything but peaceful; he must stay by Yennefer's side and protect his goddess.
Half an hour later, the entire camp suddenly descended into chaos. Some of the night guards ran around the camp, shouting in terror:
"Fire! Help! Help!"
"Our supplies have been burned! The stables are on fire too, and many horses have been killed!"
"Traitor! There must be a traitor! We've been ambushed; someone is definitely trying to stop us from getting up the mountain."
When Geralt and Yennefer emerged from the tent after the spell was broken, they found a scene of chaos. Some people were busy putting out fires, some were chasing after runaway horses, and some soldiers were frantically putting on their gear and standing guard outside Niedamir's tent, fearing that an assassin might suddenly rush out and kill their king.
In this chaotic scene, the young king dared not show himself. Only the fat steward Gilensteen, who was covered in fat and dressed in disheveled clothes, was still trying his best to maintain order in the camp.
Unfortunately, they were halfway up the mountain, where water was scarce and there wasn't enough to fight the fire. It was nighttime, and they were deep in the forest. No one dared to wander around, as they risked becoming food for wild animals and monsters.
By the time the sun rose and they frantically tried to extinguish the fire, most of the camp had been burned down, especially the food, horses, and wagons—most of the supplies needed for the journey had been lost in the darkness.
This was a huge blow to the dragon-hunting team, who had been so enthusiastic and arrogant just yesterday.
