Chapter 211 Cat School Gaitan

"Damn it, what bad luck! The commission is ruined again!"

Back at his makeshift outpost in the wilderness, Gaitan angrily kicked over his cooking pot. A few seconds later, he picked it up with a pang of regret and put it back on the fire.

He had spent almost a week in Beauclair to carry out the assassination mission, gathering intelligence, scouting, and keeping watch. He had also spent the night outside the palace walls yesterday. Now he was starving, and the mission had failed. What bad luck!

Needless to say, the assassination failed and there was no money to be made. The mage was definitely on guard, making it difficult to continue the mission. He would have to spend some more time in the wild, making a living by hunting.

Gaitan sighed, took out a piece of dry jerky from the bag at his waist, and a cheap piece of rye bread from a backpack, intending to cook it in a pot and make do with a meal.

Suddenly, he heard a slightly mocking sigh.

"Hey bro, is this all for dinner?"

"How about I treat you to a meal in town?"

Hearing the voice so close to his ear, Gai Dan instinctively rolled on the ground, losing his jerky and bread somewhere.

As he drew the dagger from his waist and cautiously looked towards the source of the sound, he saw a handsome, richly dressed half-elf boy sitting on a rock not far from the fire, looking at him with a smile.

He was quite familiar with half-elves, as there were many half-elves in the schools of thought from the past.

Seeing the distinctive vertical pupils of a Witcher in the other's eyes, Gaitan was startled and asked:

"Who are you? What are you doing here?"

Wayne's smile remained unchanged, and without any attempt to hide it, he stated directly:

"I followed you all the way from Beauclair Palace, intending to capture you and interrogate you."

"However, you seem to be having a pretty tough time, and since you're a Witcher like me, I'd like to have a chat with you."

"Followed me all the way? From Beauclair Palace?"

Gaitan had a "you're bragging" look on his face. He brandished the dagger in his hand, looked at Wayne who looked like a teenager and had no weapon, and decided to strike first, capture him, and then interrogate him about his purpose.

With this thought in mind, Gatan pushed off with both feet, his body lunging towards Wayne like an arrow released from a bow. The Cat School follows a light and swift path; as assassins, they rely on their speed of movement, which is difficult for ordinary people to react to, to reap the lives of their targets.

Unfortunately, this time he encountered Lord Wayne, who completely overwhelmed him in terms of strength, speed, agility, and physical reaction. This Gatan was not considered a particularly powerful figure in the Cat School. Although he pounced very fast, his strength was not much higher than that of an ordinary person.

Wayne simply grabbed his right hand, which was holding the dagger, and twisted it so hard that his right hand joint was dislocated. With his left hand, he placed it against his chest and delivered an instant Ald. The huge force sent Gaitan flying two or three meters away, landing him near the campfire. Gaitan clutched his chest and vomited bile.

Wayne didn't continue his attack; he simply sat quietly on the rock, looking at Gaitan with a mocking expression.

When the cat hunter finished vomiting his bile, he held his dislocated right hand with his left hand and looked up at Wayne. The initial surprise in his eyes was gone, replaced by solemnity and worry.

His opponent was clearly much stronger than him, and now that his arm was injured, he might not be able to escape. He didn't know how his opponent would deal with him.

Wayne saw through his thoughts and said calmly:

"Don't worry, we are all witchers. Even if we captured you and sent you to Beauclair's court, we could get a large bounty, but I won't do that."

"I am Wayne from the Wolf School. I just heard from others that some people from the Cat School want to cause some trouble at Beauclair's court, so I'm waiting for you there to have a chat."

"By the way, what's your name?"

Gaitan gritted his teeth and snapped his wrist back into place. He then found a rock not far from the fire and sat down, looking at Wayne with a serious expression. He said:

"I am Gaitan of the Cat School."

"Since you're not here to arrest me, then Wayne of the Wolf School, what is your purpose in seeking me out?"

Gaitan.

Upon hearing the name, Wayne immediately recognized who it was.

That was the Cat School Witcher in The Witcher 3 who helped the Northern Fools kill a Leshen, was then cheated out of his debt by the Northern Fools, almost killed by a pitchfork, and then went on a rampage to massacre the village.

Judging from this incident alone, well, he can't be considered a good person, but he's not an incorrigible villain either. At least he started out with good intentions and wanted to help the villagers.

This thought flashed through Wayne's mind. Looking at Gaitan's wary expression, he considered for a moment and then said:

"I just wanted to ask you about the Cat School."

"By the way! Gaitan, do you need a job right now? I have a good commission here."

"You won't need to kill anyone, and the reward is quite generous, enough for you to live a comfortable life for a while."

"Of course, you can refuse, but if you refuse, I will capture you and forcibly invite you to our Wolf School's castle."

"But don't worry, I won't hurt you. I just want to know some things about the Cat School. You know, it's been a long time since the various schools separated."

After hearing Wayne's words, Gaitan looked skeptical, but circumstances forced him to act. After considering for several seconds, he said:

"You need to tell me what kind of request it is first."

Faced with Gaitan's question, Wayne thought about it. Actually, the request he made earlier was just something he said casually. Now that he thought about it, he didn't really know what he wanted this guy to do.

Then, a thought flashed through his mind, and he immediately came up with an idea, saying:

"Don't worry, it's a very simple job. My current identity is a tobacco merchant. I'm planning to open a tobacco shop in Beauclair and I just happen to need a bodyguard."

"Come back to the city with me and rest for two days. Once my shop is open, you can start working."

"Judging from your current appearance, you probably don't have much money. I'll give you an advance on your payment."

Gatan was taken aback. Being a bodyguard? To be honest, as a cat-faction witcher, he had never done this kind of work before. However, being a bodyguard for a shop was indeed a fairly simple job, and the enemies he would encounter at most were thugs.

Moreover, hearing that Wayne would pay the reward in advance made Gaitan quite tempted. He was currently penniless, without a single gold coin, and living in the city was much more comfortable than living a life of hardship in the forest.

As for whether to try to escape or make other plans, we'll see when the time comes.

(I was delayed this morning, but I have a long chapter of 6,000 words tonight. I'll be writing 8,000 words a day, no less.)
