Chapter 16 Going down the mountain

Just as Wayne was considering whether or not to absorb the elemental ring...

The Wolf School emblem placed on the stone table had completed its magical charging. It looked no different from before, but upon closer inspection, one could see that the surface of the emblem was covered with a strange luster that was faintly visible to the naked eye.

Geralt reached for the badge on the stone table, examined it for a moment, then turned and handed it to Wayne, as if letting out a sigh of relief. As he walked down from the altar, he said:

"Let's go back to the castle. We've had a lot going on today, including a battle, and now we're covered in the stench of monsters."

"Let's hunt some game on the way. You haven't finished your training yet, have you?"

Wayne nodded, glanced back at the Elemental Ring with a lingering look, and sighed inwardly.

He pinned the badge to his chest, caught up with Geralt in a few steps, and said:

"My fishing trap should yield some results. Let's pick some mushrooms in the forest and see if we can catch a few rabbits or deer."

"However, there isn't much wine left in the warehouse. There's still more than a month until spring, so you can't drink like you used to without any restraint."

Winter passed and spring arrived. As Wayne prepared to descend the mountain, springtime quickly came to the year 1250.

Kaer Morhen is located in the Blue Mountains in the northeast of the Northern Kingdoms, within the territory of the Kingdom of Koldwyn. Although the snow has not yet completely melted, the weather is still very cold.

However, the demon hunters who had spent the entire winter holed up in the castle had to embark on their journeys again, toiling away for their own livelihoods.

Eskel and Lambert had set off a few days earlier than planned; they were heading to Novigrad, the free city in the north, to see if they could find a commission.

Now only Vesemir, Wayne, and Geralt remain in the castle.

Today, Wayne and Geralt are also preparing to leave Kaer Morhen and head towards the northern kingdoms.

Although the old Witcher Vesemir didn't say anything about Wayne's departure, he acted like an old man watching his child go on a long journey. He not only prepared a set of nearly new Wolf Hunter medium armor for Wayne, but also a fine steel sword for him.

According to the old man, this was a steel sword he had replaced when he was young. It contained a lot of precious metals and was a good weapon.

It's just a memento now; it's better to give it to Wayne to use.

As for the silver sword and the horse, these two items are too valuable. Even if Vesemir had some savings, he wouldn't have the financial means to prepare one for Wayne in advance. He would have to work hard for it himself.

At the castle gate, Geralt, leading a grey mare named Carrot, watched with interest as Wayne and Vesemir talked.

The old witcher patted Wayne on the shoulder and said earnestly:

"Child, after you go down the mountain, be very careful and don't get involved in the conspiracies between nobles or nations."

"We witchers must uphold the principle of neutrality and not side with any faction."

"I have confidence in your talent and ability, but you are still young. You must remember that sometimes, the human heart is more insidious than demons and ghosts, and evil people are more vicious than monsters."

"Don't easily trust strangers; beware of a knife from behind."

Listening to Vesemir's somewhat rambling teachings, Wayne felt a warm current welling up in his heart.

During the two years he spent with Vesemir in Kaer Morhen, he realized that the old man genuinely cared for him and taught him without reservation; he was practically the closest person to him in the world.

Although they were not related by blood, the old witcher treated him like a true elder, caring for his junior.

He stepped forward, gently embraced Vesemir, and said sincerely:

"Please rest assured, teacher, I will learn from Geralt and become an excellent witcher."

To everyone's surprise, after hearing Wayne's words, Vesemir instead put on a stern face and said:

"You only need to learn how he deals with all sorts of monsters. Learning bad habits like gambling, whoring, and reckless spending will only harm you."

Hearing the old Witcher say this, Wayne couldn't help but laugh out loud. He turned to look at Geralt, whose face had turned sour, before echoing him:

"I understand, teacher."

"It's getting late, we need to set off soon."

"Otherwise, we'll have to spend the night in the forest."

Vesemir patted Wayne on the shoulder with a hint of reluctance, saying goodbye:

"Alright, you can set off now. Remember my words, don't easily trust others."

Wayne nodded seriously again, and then, with the old Witcher watching him go, he and Geralt set off.

The destination of this journey has not yet been determined. However, the purpose of the witchers is to take on commissions and earn gold coins. They will first wander around some nearby villages to see if there are any monsters to clear out, and also to gather some war intelligence.

Based on past experience, wherever war has occurred and casualties have been suffered, those corpses will attract a large number of monsters that will follow, posing a danger to the nearby humans.

If there were no war, they would go to the big cities in the north to look for opportunities, where there are more wealthy people and more complex relationships, making it easier to find work.

As a newly minted Witcher, Wayne needs to save up some money to get himself a mount and forge a silver sword. These are essential pieces of equipment for Witchers, and they're not cheap, so it will probably take him a long time to save up.

Of course, this was Geralt's idea; however, he didn't know that Wayne was much richer than he imagined.

Over the past two years, Wayne's system has accumulated one professional-grade treasure chest and more than five hundred ordinary-grade treasure chests that have not yet been used. Each treasure chest contains some coins, and the total amount is certainly considerable.

However, Wayne knew that this money was obtained out of thin air, and if Geralt continued to stay by his side, it would be difficult to explain when he received this huge sum of money.

Therefore, he had to find an opportunity to get Geralt away for a while and find an excuse for his gains.

However, these are things I'll think about after leaving Kaer Morhen.

Watched by the old Witcher, Wayne followed behind Geralt, leading the mare laden with luggage, and soon disappeared into the forest.
