Chapter 116 Troublemakers Are Everywhere
Chapter 116 Troublemakers Are Everywhere
After a brief discussion, George agreed to stay in the valley and collect the most valuable parts from the corpses of monsters, including the green dragon and the giant.
Wayne, on the other hand, needs to return to the human settlement as soon as possible and bring some horses or workers to carry away the spoils.
The only problem is that to reach this valley, one must cross a swamp, which is teeming with all sorts of water ghosts, swamp witches, crocodiles, and other monsters. If there are too many people, it will be difficult to pass through.
Fortunately, their location was about an hour's drive from the Elven Ruins and about two hours' drive from Lower Valen Village.
If enough help can be found among the villagers of Lower Warren, these locals should be able to help them bring back the spoils.
What would take an ordinary person an hour, Wayne covered in just half an hour. He traversed a forest and a swamp, killing several water ghosts along the way, before finally reaching the elven underground ruins where the villagers of Lower Valen lived.
After he entered the underground ruins, some villagers, including the village chief Jeff, first looked at him with surprise and joy, but then their expressions changed to apprehension and embarrassment.
Wayne noticed this change, his expression immediately darkened, and he asked Village Chief Jeff:
"What happened, Jeff?"
Jeff rubbed his hands together awkwardly, but facing Wayne's stern gaze and the exposed hilt of his sword, he forced himself to speak:
"My lord, after you left, the villagers also heard those dragon roars. They were terrified, thinking that the evil dragon had discovered this place."
"Some young people are clamoring to leave here and escape to other places."
"I tried to stop them, but their opposition grew louder and louder, and when we realized we couldn't stop them, we prepared to let them leave."
"Who knew that one of them, a young man named Lyon, suddenly started a commotion, saying that all the books found here were their property and that they had a share, and then he led a few other young men to start robbing them."
"Although I had people stop them, a few young men still managed to escape with some books, and we couldn't catch them."
After hearing the village chief's words, Wayne felt like he'd been screwed over.
What does it mean to organize a group of people? If they really wanted to stop a few young people, how could they let them escape? This is clearly a lie.
They were both afraid of his retaliation and wanted to sell the manuscripts for money.
Wayne looked back and sure enough, almost a third of the manuscripts he had placed in the corner of the ruins were missing. Fortunately, the most valuable ones were placed at the bottom, while the ones on top were generally reading materials that recorded history or secrets.
Even so, it was still very valuable information, and if you traded it with sorcerers, you could definitely get a lot of good stuff in return.
He bought these things with his own money, and it was agreed upon beforehand, but they disappeared in the blink of an eye.
It's just that Borch arrived too suddenly, and time was of the essence. He didn't have time to deal with the elven manuscripts, and as a result, this happened in just a few hours.
The Velen region truly lives up to its reputation as a place teeming with troublemakers. Perhaps it was because he had previously given these troublemakers the impression of being too reasonable and kind that they thought he was easy to bully.
They're truly a bunch of bastards who never learn from their mistakes and who fear power but not morality.
Thinking of this, Wayne reached out and grabbed the village chief Jeff in front of him, and punched him in the stomach with his gauntlet-clad fist, making him vomit.
Seeing this, several villagers nearby, whether to break up the fight or to gang up on him, immediately pounced on Wayne.
However, they were now facing a demon hunter whose physical abilities were four or five times greater than theirs and whose martial arts skills were superb.
In just a minute or two, Wayne dodged left and right, punching and kicking, occasionally throwing people over his shoulder or using them as weapons, beating these country bumpkins to a pulp, leaving them howling in pain.
He shook the blood off his iron gauntlet and noticed a ferocious-looking young man holding a sharp dagger, aiming to stab him in the waist.
Seeing this, Wayne showed no mercy. The crowd only saw a flash of sword light and could not see when Wayne's sword was drawn. The young man's fingers, along with the dagger, had already fallen to the ground.
The young man clutched his severed hand, about to let out a painful howl, but Wayne's merciless slap knocked out several teeth, leaving him spewing blood and foam as he lay on the ground, struggling and no longer daring to cause any more trouble.
Stimulated by the sight of blood and the gleaming sword in Wayne's hand, all the villagers present fell silent, their eyes filled with fear and panic as they stared at the tall and imposing man before them.
To be honest, this was the first time Wayne had attacked so many civilians. While he felt a strange sense of exhilaration, he also had a bitter feeling.
He wasn't the kind of person who bullied the weak, but sometimes, one can't be too weak. What needs to be fought for, even if it means bloodshed and sacrifice, must be done.
Seeing the village chief Jeff struggling to his feet, Wayne pressed the sword against his throat and said in a somber tone:
"I am the heir to the Svensian family, the future Baron Svensian, and Baron Veserad of Velen is a good friend of mine."
"It was the Baron who specifically invited me to slay this evil dragon."
"But you lowly people, how dare you steal my property? Do you want to be hanged?"
The Svensian family was a relatively unknown baronial family in Vigema. His current appearance and demeanor made him look like a hot-blooded young nobleman, and it was virtually impossible for him to be fooled by these ignorant country bumpkins.
Indeed, in this feudal era, the title of nobleman was far more intimidating than that of knight, bandit, or witcher, and even more terrifying than the sword he held to Jeff's neck.
Upon hearing Wayne's noble status and his friendship with Baron Willen, Jeff's legs went weak, and he knelt down on the ground. Some of the other villagers who were watching also knelt down, some of the more timid ones following suit.
Wayne remained unmoved and continued to threaten in a stern voice:
"You lowly people, I'll give you three days to make those people return everything I own."
"I will return to Lower Warren village in three days. If any thieves still haven't returned my belongings, Baron Willen will issue an arrest warrant, and they will face hanging."
After saying that, Wayne reached out and grabbed Jeff by the collar, pulled him in front of him, and said in a tone that was still full of anger:
"Now listen, you ungrateful bastards, I have slain that green dragon. I saved your village and avenged you."
"You must now select ten strong porters to come with me to the site where I slew the dragon and bring back my spoils."
"As for the others, you can send your villagers back to their village. No monsters will attack you anymore."
"You ungrateful fools, don't provoke me any further, or I'll make you taste the wrath of the Svetlana family."
No one dared to joke with their lives. Soon, under Wayne's watchful eye, Jeff, the village chief of Lower Warren, arranged for the other elderly, women, and children to return to the village. He himself, along with ten strong young men, carrying the remaining manuscripts, followed Wayne to the valley where George was.
