Chapter 458, 456. Bah, imposter!
Chapter 459, 456. Bah, imposter!
O'Brien did not hide the fact that the target he was pursuing had killed nine people, and informed every employed wizard about it.
He didn't hire these people to die; he genuinely wanted them to capture Lynn and take away his tenfold commission.
Informing them of this information was also meant to raise their awareness, at least to prevent Lynn from resolving the situation so quickly, and to give them some room to resist while waiting for support from others.
However, all of these ideas of his were merely wishful thinking on his part.
After that, news of a hired wizard squad being wiped out came almost every half hour, but Lynn was still nowhere to be seen alive.
The exact number of employed wizards who have died on this island is unknown to the surviving wizards.
They had no way to communicate with each other, and the Aurors in Congress, after initially telling them that nine people had been killed, never gave them the exact death toll again.
Although the hired wizards searching the woods didn't find a trace of Lynn, they were encountering the corpses of their fallen companions more and more frequently.
This naturally terrified most of the hired wizards.
They came here to make money, not to die. Now, they haven't even seen their target yet, but many of their colleagues have already died. Naturally, these people are afraid.
Most of the hired wizards said they wanted to leave.
O'Brien didn't make things difficult for them. He gave them the compensation they deserved, then, in accordance with the agreement signed in the contract, erased all their memories of the mission and released them from the island.
But there are still some fearless, money-grubbing scoundrels who want to take this opportunity.
Because O'Brien increased the bounty to one hundred times, anyone who could find Lynn's location alive and send out the signal would receive a commission one hundred times greater.
That much money is enough for a squad of wizards to live a carefree life in the magical world for the rest of their lives.
There are always some fools who think they're lucky enough and believe this is their time to turn their luck around.
But Hancock's team of four black wizards had absolutely no interest in the bounty.
All four of them were veterans among hired wizards, and they had experienced firsthand the truth that some money looked tempting, but could only be looked at; trying to touch it would come at the cost of one's life.
They certainly knew how to choose between life and money.
Strangely, one of their team members couldn't understand such a simple principle.
"Hancock, what's wrong with you today? You're never usually this short of money. That 100x commission looks tempting, but it's just something to look at. Who can actually get that money?"
More than one person in the team tried to persuade him. The four of them had a good relationship and had been through many life-and-death situations together, so they trusted each other a lot.
"Yes, there's clearly something wrong with this mission. Have you ever seen a boy who isn't even an adult yet possess such strength? Just look at all the corpses we've found along the way, killed by the Death Curse!"
But Hancock remained unmoved by his teammates' words.
"I've simply decided to stay; whether you leave or stay is your business."
His words were very cold-hearted, completely abandoning the feelings of his teammates of many years, as if he wanted to go solo.
The others stopped trying to persuade them, sighed, and turned to leave.
However, before they could even turn and leave, the black man named Hancock suddenly spoke up meaningfully.
"It's too late. You probably can't leave this island now."
Before Hancock could finish speaking, and before his three teammates could react, four invisible blades shattered the armor enchantments they always wore.
Blue light fragments scattered, and a sound like shattering glass echoed in the quiet forest.
At the same moment, the instant their Ironclad Curse was broken, a dark green wave erupted, surging and engulfing everyone present.
The three black wizards, who had no time to react to what had happened in those few seconds, collapsed to the ground bleeding from all seven orifices.
Only the wizard named Hancock remained standing calmly in place, looking in one direction with a smile.
"Stop hiding. Your Disillusionment Spell still needs improvement. I noticed you the moment you started tiptoeing behind that tree."
Lynn revealed his figure with a solemn expression.
His gaze was fixed on the smiling black wizard. This was the first wizard he had encountered in all his time fighting as a guerrilla on this island who hadn't just collapsed on the ground waiting to die after using up his entire combo.
Hancock saw through Lynn's intentions. He raised his hands and threw his wand on the ground to indicate that he posed no threat.
"Don't rush to attack Lynn. Look who I am."
As he spoke, his facial features, including his skin tone, underwent a dramatic change.
The dark skin began to turn white, the once firm skin on the face began to loosen and wrinkle, and the short, curly black hair turned into straight, silver-white hair.
In just a few seconds, he transformed from Hancock, a black man, into Fox, an old white man.
Fox smiled as he looked at Lynn, but he didn't see any joy in Lynn's expression as if he were seeing his master again. Instead, he seemed even worse.
He said something inexplicable.
"I'm Fox, Lynn, your first-year Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, Fox. What's with that expression? It's like you don't recognize me."
Lynn looked really bad.
Having witnessed Professor Fox being impersonated several times, especially now, whenever he sees Professor Fox's face, he instinctively feels that the person in front of him is someone in disguise.
"You say you're Professor Fox? What proof do you have?"
Lynn pointed his wand directly at him, showing no sign of letting his guard down just because he had thrown away his wand. There are quite a few African wizards who are skilled at casting spells without a wand.
Fox looked completely bewildered.
"I was using Disguise Magus just now, you should know that, I am Disguise Magus."
Lynn sneered.
"There aren't many disguised Magus in the world, and Professor Fox isn't the only one. Am I supposed to assume that every disguised Magus I see is Professor Fox?"
