Chapter 331

"What did the Sorting Hat ask you?"

After Umaru ran excitedly toward Lynn, a Slytherin student next to Lynn stood up and made room for Umaru to sit down.

Umaru looked around excitedly. Although she had sat at this table quite often last semester, this was the first time she had been able to stay here openly and legitimately in her own name.

"It asked me if I had lofty ideals, and I said of course I did. I wanted to have endless games to play every day, endless delicious food to eat, and to sleep as long as I wanted. The Sorting Hat praised my awareness and said that going to Slytherin would allow me to better fulfill this ideal, so it sorted me in."

Lynn stared speechlessly at the Sorting Hat, which had already been sorted and was being taken away by Professor McGonagall.

No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't figure out how Slytherin students had anything to do with such unrealistic ideals.

Lynn strongly suspected that it was simply because Slytherin had such a bad reputation that most young wizards were unwilling to be sorted into that house, with fewer than ten young wizards being sorted into Slytherin this year.

If this continues, the number of Slytherin students will decrease, and it's not impossible that Hogwarts will eventually go from having four houses to having only three.

So, in order to prevent Slytherin from becoming history, the Sorting Hat tricked Umaru, a young wizard whose bloodline barely met the admission requirements for Slytherin, into going to Slytherin.

But that's not so bad. Being in the same college as her means Lynn will have a chance to keep an eye on her, preventing her from thinking about eating, drinking, and having fun all the time at school.

After the Sorting Ceremony, Dumbledore didn't waste any time with small talk, which was one of the things the young wizards loved most about him. He never put on airs and knew that everyone had been frightened by the Dementors on the way and was already hungry. He said they could talk about anything after they had eaten.

After a sumptuous dinner, Dumbledore, as usual, reiterated the rules of Hogwarts to the new students, and then introduced this year's Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

"Since your Professor Belloc wants to continue his studies at Hogwarts, I have to accept his resignation. From now on, Hogwarts will lose an excellent professor but gain an excellent student."

The young wizards below all looked at Lynn, who was sitting at the Slytherin table, and burst into happy laughter.

"However, I have specially invited Mr. Remus Lupin to serve as your new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. He was an outstanding graduate of Hogwarts and will become an excellent professor this year."

The students applauded, not only to support Professor Lu Ping, but also because his actions in protecting the students on the train had been witnessed by most people.

Although they hadn't attended any classes yet, everyone had a very good impression of this seemingly very gentle middle-aged man.

However, it's impossible for everyone to like him.

On the high platform, at the professor's long table, Snape's gaze toward Lupin was filled with undisguised disgust and hatred.

Some observant young wizards noticed Snape's mood but didn't think anything was wrong, because everyone knew that he actually wanted to take the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts and never gave a good look to anyone who took his place. It's just that this time his expression was even worse.

Just as Dumbledore finished introducing this year's Defense Against the Dark Arts professors, and the students and unsuspecting professors thought his speech was over and were about to leave, Dumbledore's aged voice rang out once more.

"At the same time, Hogwarts will undergo a major overhaul starting this year."

The students, who were already getting up, were suddenly stunned. They sat back down in their seats, looking completely bewildered, not understanding what Dumbledore meant by this major change.

On the high platform, most of the professors looked at Dumbledore with puzzlement, except for Professor McGonagall, who was usually responsible for handling the school's trivial matters, and Filch, the castle caretaker.

Since this matter mainly involves their power within the school, Dumbledore had already spoken with them during the summer vacation.

Professor McGonagall's expression remained normal, but Filch's face looked rather grim.

"The prefect system has always been the cornerstone of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry's student self-governance system, and it has continued in this castle for more than seven hundred years since it was implemented in 1213."

Dumbledore's voice echoed through the hall, and everyone else listened quietly. They knew that this great wizard would not speak without reason; if he said it was a large-scale change, then it certainly was not a small matter.

"But time changes everything. Perhaps the prefectural system was the most suitable system for Hogwarts during the past seven hundred years, but now the various drawbacks of this system have become increasingly apparent."

The relaxed student self-governance system makes the learning atmosphere at Hogwarts extremely lax. Although the prefects and student council presidents and vice presidents have some power, they rarely use it because too many affairs in the castle are interfered with by the professors, and there is undoubtedly a huge generation gap between the older and younger generations (a word Lynn taught him).

Those being managed cannot understand the difficulties faced by those being managed, and those being managed cannot know the intentions of those being managed. This is why Mr. Filch's job as the castle keeper is so difficult. Furthermore, the prefects of each college are more like mouthpieces for the teachers than true student self-governing organizations.

The male and female student council presidents, elected only in seventh grade, were mostly busy with their graduation exams and job prospects after graduation. The presidency was more like a gilding of their resumes; they rarely concerned themselves with the actual responsibilities of their positions.

Dumbledore's words caused a murmur among the students. Among the young wizards were some clever ones, who could roughly guess what Dumbledore wanted to do from his words.

"Therefore, I have decided to abolish the prefectural system at Hogwarts starting this year!"

The young wizards were in an uproar, and even the professors who were unaware of the situation looked at Dumbledore with disbelief. Although they had some guesses while listening to him speak, they did not expect it to be so sudden.

"Professor! Professor Dumbledore! I have a question!"

A student raised his hand and stood up from his chair. It was Percy Weasley from Gryffindor. He cherished his position as a prefect and believed that he would become the Hogwarts Head of Students this semester.

Unexpectedly, the chairman's letter did not arrive during the summer vacation, and after returning to school, he even lost his position as class monitor!
