Chapter 206, Section 203: The Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor Who Failed Before School Even Started (Mega Chapter)
Umaru buried her head under the covers, muttering to herself in a self-deceptive manner.
"You can't see me, you can't see me, you can't see me."
As soon as Lynn returned, her IQ plummeted from its high point.
Lynn picked Tom up from the floor and put him on the table, then pulled Little Buri out of the blanket.
"You sneak off to do naughty things the moment I'm not home, and you even want to persuade Tom to be naughty with you?"
Xiao Mai was being held in mid-air by Lynn, her limbs unable to touch the ground, and could only look at him pitifully.
"I was wrong, Lynn."
"You shouldn't apologize to me, you should apologize to Tom for throwing him on the ground."
"I'm sorry, Tom."
"I accept your apology and sincerely hope that you can mend your ways."
Tom was currently playing the role of a good helper to the teacher and a good role model for the parents. This made Umaru apologize verbally, but in her heart she was secretly thinking about how to find an opportunity to give Tom a good beating.
Lynn put Umaru back on the ground, and the two little girls hurriedly ran out of Lynn's room.
"You shouldn't let them do this. Just like you taught me, when you make a mistake, you should know it and not cover it up. That way you can learn from it and not repeat it next time. If you spoil them like this, they will cause big problems sooner or later."
Even after Umaru and Hermione left, Tom continued his lecturing, and this time the target of his lecture was Lynn.
Lynn can now proudly announce that, under his tutelage for less than a summer, Voldemort has been successfully transformed, completely reformed, and his personality is now worlds apart from what it was before.
However, the result is as it appears now; the correction seems a bit excessive.
Perhaps influenced by Lynn, Tom has now developed a rather annoying habit—he likes to lecture others.
He would nag about anything he deemed morally wrong, no matter who it was, hoping to make the other person realize their mistake and correct it, even if they were complete strangers to him.
But this isn't necessarily a bad thing; it's at least a huge improvement over his previous terrible personality.
Lynn planned to keep Tom by his side for a while longer to observe him. If he didn't find any problems, he would return him to Dumbledore and say that his transformation was complete.
With Dumbledore's Legilimency technique, he could easily find out whether Tom had truly reformed or was just putting on an act for Lynn.
Lynn didn't rush to report Lockhart's disappearance to Dumbledore. Dumbledore was very busy right now and spent most of his time away from England. He would need to wait a while before he had some free time.
Lynn stayed at home for a few more days, and then in August, less than a month before the start of school, he had Kira take him back to Abros.
The small town hadn't changed much since he last left; life there remained leisurely and peaceful, without the hurried pace of big cities.
Lynn didn't let Kira come with him, but instead went alone to the church in the city that he hadn't seen for a year.
Although this small church is the only one in town, it is quite deserted because the town has a small population and it is not the weekend.
When Lynn pushed open the door and walked in, Sister Rozier was the only one sitting in the front row of the church, quietly looking at the Bible in her hands.
"I've already told you, Leon, I don't want to get involved in your mess. Figure it out yourself, instead of constantly asking me questions. I'm not your boss."
She heard the noise and turned around as she spoke. When she saw who was standing in front of the door, Rozier's voice stopped abruptly. She stared blankly at Lynn, who was standing in front of the door with her back to the sunlight, waving at her.
"Hello, Mrs. Rozier? I'm sorry, I don't know if it's the right way to address a clergyman."
Rozier's perpetually cold face softened for the first time, and one could even clearly see the kindness she was trying to convey.
"It's alright, child. I'm not a real clergyman, or rather, no wizard ever becomes a clergyman. Besides, you can just call me Madam."
She seemed very excited in front of Lynn, so excited that she was somewhat at a loss for what to do.
This forced Lynn to find topics to talk about to ease her emotions.
"I came here specifically to thank you. Not long ago, you sent me a bunch of things to the school. The things were really valuable and helped me a lot. I didn't know what gift to send back to you, so I had to come back here to express my gratitude to you in person."
Rozier waved his hand and said.
"No need for that, child. Those things were rightfully yours. We were just holding them for you before, and now we're simply returning them to their rightful owner."
Rozier didn't seem to care about those things at all. He was used to being a big shot following Grindelwald all over the world and had seen all kinds of rare treasures in the magical world. He even thought that what he sent to Lynn was too cheap and not worthy of Lynn's status.
The things themselves weren't important; what Rozier cared about was the fact that Lynn was actually standing in front of her.
She took a deep breath and hesitantly asked.
"Does anyone else know you're here?"
Lynn understood her concerns, blinked, and said, "Professor Dumbledore knows. I've already spoken with him, and I know that he was the one who was by my side back then. He doesn't object to me contacting you now, so there's nothing to worry about."
Rozier finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"You seem to be getting along well with him?"
"He is my principal, and he trusts me, so we naturally get along quite well."
Rozier's breathing became rapid: "Do you know your own identity, and what you've done with him?"
Lynn knew what she meant. From the perspective of the saints, they did indeed have a great hatred for Dumbledore, even greater than the hatred between Grindelwald and Dumbledore. Now that Lynn and Dumbledore were getting along well, they breathed a sigh of relief but were still not quite able to accept it.
"I know," Lynn said frankly, without hiding anything.
"You know, you..."
Lynn interrupted her: "You have to admit that times have changed, madam."
"The era of my great-uncle has been over for almost fifty years, and even the second, more extreme one has passed away, but Dumbledore is still alive, and he still has a huge influence in the wizarding world. That cannot be changed. If you want to really do something for the wizarding world, you can't stand against him, but you have to cooperate with him."
Rozier remained silent at first, then felt that something was off about what Lynn had said.
What can I do for the magical world?
Her eyes lit up, and she felt she had guessed Lynn's intentions.
As a descendant of Grindelwald, Rozier never treated Lynn as an ordinary child from the beginning. She firmly believed that every Grindelwald was extraordinary.
As for why Lynn spoke so cryptically, Rozier figured he was afraid Dumbledore didn't trust him and was pretending to trust him while secretly monitoring him.
As expected of someone who shares the same blood as the Dark Lord, he considers things very thoroughly.
Rozier said solemnly, "I understand."
Lynn stared at her, bewildered.
What do you know?
His words just now had no hidden meaning at all; he meant exactly what he said, and it had nothing to do with what Rozier thought he was doing.
Lynn didn't want Rozier to misunderstand him, so he spoke frankly.
"Dumbledore and I have agreed to make a major change to Hogwarts to improve the living and learning environment for young wizards from half-blood and Muggle families."
Rozier exclaimed, "That's excellent. Unite the majority and strike at the minority. That sir had the same idea."
Lynn: "."
Your idea is dangerous, do you even realize that?
Lynn now finally understood why Dumbledore hadn't been very willing to let him interact with these people before. If his will hadn't been strong enough, he might have really been swayed by them and turned to the ideas of the great wizards.
However, it doesn't matter what Rozier and the others think. They have been here for over forty years, just like people who have been locked up in prison for over forty years. Even if they get out, they have no connections or relationships and are completely out of touch with society, so they can't cause much of an impact.
Instead of trying to correct his impression of Rozier, he changed the subject and started talking about other things.
"Madam, I heard from the house-elf that my great-uncle left me a vault in Germany?"
Lynn never intended to directly take Grindelwald's money from the German vault, especially after learning that more than half of the Ministry of Magic had not forgotten the Grindelwald family.
He lacks nothing now, and has so much money that he could count a Galleon and starve to death if he threw one away. So, once he finds out that there's nothing important in the German vault, he doesn't plan to deal with it anymore.
But Rozier shook his head.
"We subordinates naturally wouldn't know what kind of wealth the Dark Lord left behind, but I suggest that you don't touch that vault until you have sufficient strength to guarantee its safety."
"Why?" Lynn asked.
"Because someone is watching everything about Lord Grindelwald," Rozier warned solemnly. "Including us. More than ten years ago, a few Americans came here. They were all Muggles and had all been cursed with the Imperius Curse. Each of them secretly carried a gun, intending to kill all of us remaining saints."
Five of us died that day. Later, the city police discovered something was wrong, arrested them all, but couldn't get anything out of them. I thought it was a conspiracy by the British wizards, and Dumbledore broke his promise and risked going to Hogwarts to question him, but he later confirmed that someone else was actually behind it and that he would help us negotiate.
In the end, we had no choice but to swallow our anger, because we had offended too many people in the past. It wouldn't be surprising if any Ministry of Magic in the world wanted to cause us trouble.
Lynn knew perfectly well who she was talking about.
He just didn't expect these people to have such a long reach, not even sparing saints like Abros who had lost their magic.
However, this also confirms Lynn's guess: if the contents of the German vault weren't that important, Lynn wouldn't be in a hurry to take them.
He actually has an idea in his mind right now.
If he were to suggest to Dumbledore that he go to Nurmengard to visit his great-uncle, I wonder if Dumbledore would agree.
Of course, there's no rush, and he doesn't really need to see Grindelwald right now.
"Since you're here, why don't you have lunch here before you leave?" Rozier invited Lynn. "The Simon family's food is excellent, and their steak is their specialty; even Lord Grindelwald praised it."
Lynn did not refuse. Regardless of the reason or who it was for, these old people were genuinely kind to him, and communicating with them more was a way of making some compensation to his great-uncle.
"Simon? Is that the fat guy who got shot in the church?" It's been a year, but Lynn still has some recollection of those names.
"Yes, that's him." Rozier locked the church doors, then grabbed Lynn's arm and Apparated with him.
They had made a promise to Dumbledore that even if their magic was restored, they would not leave the town, but they would still use their magic as usual.
With a twist, Lynn found himself at the farm that he knew very well.
Looking back now, it's surprising that Dumbledore actually went along with his antics, riding Simon's cow to chase away all of Simon's livestock.
The place is still lush and green, and the cattle pen is full of cattle again.
"Have those cows been found?" Lynn asked somewhat embarrassedly.
"We recovered some of it, but most of it was lost. However, a few of us chipped in to refill Simon's tank, so don't worry, he didn't suffer any loss."
As they walked towards the farmhouse, they could hear the noise coming from inside from afar.
"Make something nice today, Simon, please, make me a steak. I haven't had any meat for a week, I want to eat meat."
"I'm not going to cook steak until you take this idiot away! He's been eating at my house for almost a month! He doesn't do anything, he can't do anything! All he knows is eating!"
"It's not my fault, I really had no choice. My place is too small, it's more than enough for me alone. If another person lives there, the neighbors will notice something's wrong. Smith, can you help me persuade Simon? I know you want to eat his steak too, right? Right?"
"What kind of behavior is this, behaving so humbly! Skipping one meal of meat won't kill you!"
"Don't play dumb! If you don't want to eat, why did you come with me?"
Hearing the argument inside from outside the door, Rozier's face darkened. She had always felt that these guys were becoming increasingly unreliable after living comfortably for too long.
She led Lynn in, kicked the door open, and the atmosphere inside immediately fell silent.
The somewhat hunchbacked, gaunt old man Leon, the lame but robust old man Smith, and the fat old man Simon with a full beard were clearly afraid of Rozier. As they watched her kick the door open and walk in, they immediately recalled what outrageous things they had done recently that had provoked this great figure to come and question them.
Lynn followed behind Rozier, which prevented the three of them from seeing him immediately.
"What are you three men arguing about in broad daylight?" the old nun reprimanded them coldly.
Simon grumbled, feeling wronged, "Those two old bastards come to my place every day to freeload, and they even force me to cook steaks."
Leon chuckled and changed the subject: "What are you doing here, Rozier?"
"Let Simon cook the steak."
Simon: "."
Leon and Smith burst into laughter, clapping and exclaiming, "Brilliant! Simon, this isn't something we asked you to make; Rozier wants some too!"
Rozier watched the two old men putting on a show with a cold laugh: "When did I say the steak was for me?"
She stepped aside, revealing Lynn behind her: "We have a distinguished guest today, let him try your cooking."
Lynn looked at them, smiled, and greeted them, "Hi, hello."
The three old men looked at Lynn as if she were an unparalleled beauty, and their breathing instantly became much heavier.
Simon rubbed his hands together, his initial reluctance turning into a silly grin.
"I'll go and fry them right away. Not only do I have steaks, but my cakes are also exceptional. I'll let you try them today."
He chuckled, put on his apron, and ran into the kitchen, while Leon and Smith both stood up.
"Why did you come all this way?"
They all treated Lynn with unusual respect, as if they had transferred the same attitude they had shown to Grindelwald to him.
Lynn did not become complacent because of this. He knew that the people who truly respected him were never him, but his great-uncle who lived far away in Austria.
"I'm here to thank you for the things you gave me before."
"Ah, those things, they should have been yours to begin with. We were just keeping them safe for you."
Although they seemed flustered, it was clear that Lynn's arrival made them all very happy.
After chatting with them in the living room for a while, Lynn suddenly realized that, apart from Simon who was cooking in the kitchen, there was a fifth person in the living room besides the four of them.
And this person looks strangely familiar!
It was Lockhart, whom Dumbledore hadn't been able to contact for some time!
Lynn had never met Lockhart in person, but photos of this star wizard appeared in the wizarding world from time to time, and after seeing them so often, he naturally became familiar with him.
To make sure she hadn't mistaken him for someone else, Lynn went up to the man who was sitting in a chair, seemingly lost in thought, and carefully observed him.
Blonde hair, handsome face, it looks like it's him, but the temperament is so different.
He no longer had his signature smile; his face became utterly bewildered, and he stared blankly like a fool.
"Are you Gilderoy Lockhart?" Unable to determine his identity, Lynn asked directly.
However, the blond man still looked at him with a bewildered expression.
"Gidero Lockhart? Who is he? Who am I? And who are you?"
Lynn frowned as he listened to the man's series of seemingly philosophical but actually silly questions. He didn't know if this man was Lockhart, but he was sure there was something wrong with his brain.
He turned his gaze to Rozier and his group.
"What's going on?"
Neither Rozier nor Smith spoke; instead, they both looked at Leon.
Under the spotlight of everyone's gaze, the gaunt old man scratched his bald head and said awkwardly.
"This isn't my fault, this person is a fraud."
Although the saints had stayed in Abros for a long time without going out, they had also subscribed to the Daily Prophet and knew a general idea about some famous wizards and events.
They all knew Lockhart's reputation in the wizarding world.
So Leon told Lynn about his encounter with Lockhart.
Since Abros was fully reopened last year, many wizards have visited the place, most of them to trade with the saints, since they still have a lot of good stuff.
Some curious individuals came to see what the dark wizard who had almost ruled the entire magical world looked like, and Lockhart was one of them.
He traveled to Abrose during the summer vacation at Hogwarts and happened to run into Leon. The two of them chatted and boasted to each other in a Muggle tavern.
Leon may look like a sleazy old man now, but he was once a true master among masters of the saints, an ace among dark wizards. He followed Grindelwald all over the world for so many years and has seen it all.
After chatting with Lockhart for a while, the conman took a liking to the old man's story, which looked old and easy to bully. He wanted to use the same trick he had used on the people he had dealt with before, and cast a forgetting spell on Leon to change his memories so that all the boasts he had made would be his.
However, it turned out that Leon was already on guard against him.
They subdued him on the spot and then, in retaliation, cast a Forgetfulness Curse on Lockhart as well.
However, because he hadn't used the spell for a long time, he didn't control the power well and wiped out Lockhart's memories, turning him into an idiot.
After that, Leon was in a difficult position. Lockhart was, after all, a star wizard in the wizarding world. Now that he had made him like this, if the Ministry of Magic sent someone to investigate, would anyone believe that Lockhart, a former saint, was a fraud?
With all memories erased, truth serum and mind control are no longer effective.
Let's just kill him. Putting aside whether Leon, who has lived in Muggle society for over forty years, could actually do it, even if he did, if this gets out, he might have been fine before, but this would mean he'd be stuck in Azkaban for life.
With no other options, Leon could only leave Lockhart with Simon for the time being. His farm was big enough that no one would notice if there was one more person.
And so it went until today when Lynn came here and discovered Lockhart.
