Chapter 35 Who are you?
"Then where's your money?" Jiang Yun Ning didn't believe that the old house could produce so much cash to settle the bill.
"The bill will be settled tomorrow," Song Mingzhen said. "We're all from the same village, why would they lie to me?"
Jiang Yuning keenly noticed that several people who were about to leave at the back of the line stopped when they heard that the bill would be settled tomorrow.
Although it's only a penny difference, one payment is settled on the spot, while the other is settled tomorrow. Everyone has their own thoughts on this.
"Why don't we go take a look? It won't make a difference if we don't go another day. It's fourteen coins."
"Forget it, I don't trust Jiang Youfu. It's safer to keep the money in my own hands."
"Then I'll go take a look. If it's ten catties, it's a full ten coins short."
Several people quietly left with their baskets on their backs.
Jiang Yun Ning wasn't a petty person and wouldn't mind if someone chose a better acquirer. So he simply pretended not to see it.
Seeing that she was not speaking, Song Mingzhen was too lazy to say anything either, but her eyes seemed to be glued to Jiang Che.
She pursed her lips, leaning closer with a shy expression. "Jiang Che, are you doing well at the Jiang family? Has Jiang Yun Ning bullied you?"
Jiang Che was teaching Jiang Anhe to write, preparing for their trip to the academy.
Suddenly hearing someone speaking to her, she looked up and stared at her with some confusion.
Seeing that she was being stared at, Song Mingzhen assumed it was because her outfit was attractive, and immediately fidgeted, smoothing her hair. Just as she was about to say something, she heard a voice ask, "Who are you?"
Song Mingzhen was stunned.
"You don't recognize me?"
Jiang Che's brows furrowed even deeper. Is this guy sick?
Thinking of this, he held Jiang Anhe and silently moved to the side, afraid that she might suddenly go crazy and start hurting people.
"You!" Song Mingzhen felt immensely humiliated. "Hmph."
She stomped her foot angrily and ran away.
Jiang Yun Ning, who had been silently observing the situation, smiled with satisfaction.
The next morning, Jiang Yuning saw Jiang Youfu and his son Jiang Mancang at the entrance of Baiweixuan.
The father and son couldn't bear to borrow an oxcart, so they each carried a large basket to this spot. They were already exhausted and covered in sweat.
"Yun Ning," Jiang Youfu laughed, "your cousin and I also caught cicada nymphs. You're not angry, are you?"
Jiang Yun Ning found it amusing: "Of course I'm not angry, it's all about skill."
After saying that, he didn't bother with the two men and handed the oxcart over to the worker to weigh it.
"Miss Jiang," the waiter said quickly, "you've lost a lot of weight these past few days. Only three hundred jin today."
Jiang Yun Ning nodded: "More people are looking for them now. That's normal."
And now many of them have turned into cicadas and flown up into the trees. She does have a way to catch them, but she's too lazy to do it.
This is just 300 jin, including the amount from my uncle's village and my sister-in-law's family.
The cicada nymph trade is about to end.
"Miss Jiang." Upon learning that Jiang Yun Ning had arrived, the shopkeeper quickly came out to greet her: "Miss Jiang, please come in. The owner asked me to pass on a message to you."
Jiang Yun Ning nodded and went to the private room with Jiang Che.
Looking at Jiang Yun Ning's treatment, Jiang You Fu's eyes widened, and he wished he could go back to the day his relationship with his sister was severed and beat himself to death.
"Father," Jiang Mancang was also somewhat taken aback, "If we hadn't severed ties, do you think our family would get a share of the money she earned?"
Given Jiang Liu's style, she would definitely try to squeeze something out of her.
The father and son stood there, their eyes filled with regret.
They had long forgotten that Jiang Yuning was no longer the naive Jiang Yuning they once knew. Therefore, regardless of whether the kinship was severed or not, they couldn't take Jiang Yuning's money.
Inside the private room, the innkeeper cupped his hands in greeting.
"Miss Jiang, the employer said they're ordering another batch of soap; this is the deposit."
He pulled out three hundred taels of silver notes from his sleeve.
Jiang Yun Ning felt somewhat helpless; it seemed she really needed to find someone to help with the soap making. Otherwise, she'd be exhausted.
"Where is your boss?" She took the silver. It felt like she hadn't seen Xie Shengan in a long time.
The shopkeeper didn't hide anything: "The owner recently went to the next county, and there's been some trouble at the shop there."
Jiang Yun Ning nodded, accepted the silver notes, and prepared to go to the backyard to lead the oxcart away.
Before they even got close, they heard Jiang Youfu's voice. "What? Fourteen coins?"
The shop assistant glanced at him and said, "Yes, if you're not selling, then leave."
Jiang Youfu quickly smiled apologetically, "Sell, sell, sell! How could I not sell? Young man, why is Jiang Yunning's so expensive?"
The waiter didn't hide anything; it was no secret in the restaurant: "Miss Jiang gave the recipe to our head chef and didn't accept any money. Sixteen coins was a special price for Miss Jiang."
The waiter picked up a pen: "What's your name? I'll write a receipt."
Jiang Mancang gave his name and pressed his fingerprint.
"Look at the mess you've made! Wasn't it supposed to be sixteen coins?" Jiang Youfu glared angrily at Jiang Mancang.
"Dad," Jiang Mancang said helplessly, "how was I supposed to know there were so many different prices? Besides, Jiang Yunning was so stupid before, how could she possibly know this stuff was edible?"
He had assumed that everyone who came to deliver it would pay sixteen coins per catty.
Jiang Yun Ning almost burst out laughing.
"Oh dear, Jiang Che, let's go buy some meat today," she called out deliberately. "I've been so busy these past few days."
Jiang Che nodded and hummed in agreement.
"You!" Jiang Youfu knew she had overheard their conversation and angrily flicked his sleeve. "You just wait."
Jiang Yun Ning raised an eyebrow: "I won't wait. You're too slow. Our oxcart is fast!"
No sooner had she finished speaking than a waiter brought out an oxcart with several boxes of pastries on it: "Miss Jiang, these are the pastries that just arrived at Baiweixuan. The manager asked you to try them."
Seeing that Jiang Yuning was about to leave, Jiang Youfu quickly called out, "Yuning, do you have an oxcart? Can you give us a ride? We're all family."
He laughed, having long forgotten his previous attitude.
Jiang Yunning got into the car without turning her head: "Uncle, your change of attitude is just as fast as Grandma's. We're no longer related, so it's best to have less contact. Nobody should take advantage of anyone else."
Jiang Che raised his hand, flicked his long whip, and the wheels began to creak and turn.
The two went to Butcher Zhang and bought a cartload of beef and mutton fat, as well as several kilograms of meat.
"Here's the pig pancreas you wanted. We've been slaughtering a lot of pigs these past few days, so I saved twenty for you." Butcher Zhang threw the bag of pig pancreas directly onto the cart.
"This is free, otherwise very few people would buy it, and it would all end up being thrown away," Zhang the butcher said honestly. Jiang Yun Ning didn't stand on ceremony: "Okay, thank you, Brother Zhang."
The oxcart was covered with a cloth, completely obscuring it.
Upon entering the village, the large willow tree, where groups of men and women would usually gather to gossip, was now deserted.
Everyone was trying to make money so they could buy food after paying their land taxes.
Jiang Yuning couldn't help but sigh, no matter the era, it was never easy for ordinary people to have enough to eat and wear.
