Chapter 41 Military Judge's Advanced Medical Tent
When the military judge entered the fort, it was just getting dark.
It started snowing again in Blackstone Castle.
Not big.
One by one, the grains were sprinkled onto the merit list. The paste used to paste the list turned white from the cold. Three wooden plaques leaned against the wall, with marks on the edges from being hit by sword sheaths.
The group that came from Bailang Pass was not a single team.
Six armored military officers led the way, each with a wooden plaque bearing the character "法" (law) on it. Behind them rode a blue horse, carrying a tall, thin man in his thirties with a pale face and cold eyes.
His name is Yan Heng.
Judge Bailang Guanjun.
Han Wenshan personally greeted them at the gate of the fort.
Ji Yunzhou was also there.
Lu Shuangyi stood beside the military merit list, wearing an old cloak over her silver armor. Her hand was not on her sword, but it was very close to the hilt.
Yan Heng dismounted, and his first glance was neither at Han Wenshan nor at Ji Yunzhou.
He looked at the rankings.
Military merit list.
Armory rankings.
List of injuries sustained from stick injuries.
The three notice boards were guarded by the cooks. Old Chai lay on a stretcher, his back wound still unhealed, his face ashen, yet he forced himself to lift his head. Stone had one arm in a sling, the other gripping an iron fork. Ma Liu stood by the wall, his eyes darting around. Lame San leaned against the wooden notice board, one of his old, injured legs bent halfway, silently reciting words.
Yan Heng stared at it for a long time.
Han Wenshan spoke up: "Lord Yan, the reason Black Stone Fortress is in such chaos is precisely because of these private notices."
The snow fell on the list paper, making a soft rustling sound.
Yan Heng asked, "Who put that up?"
Han Wenshan said, "Chen Mu."
Where are they?
"Medical tent".
Yan Heng then turned around.
"Advanced medical tents".
Han Wenshan frowned.
"Lord Yan, according to military law, the notices should be sealed, the registers locked, and the people arrested first."
Yan Heng glanced at him.
"If a person dies, who will be tried?"
Han Wenshan didn't say anything more.
The medical tent smelled strongly of medicine.
Lin Qinghe was changing the dressing. The hot water in the basin had cooled down, and a stack of white cloths lay there. Chen Mu leaned against the low couch, his face paler than the snow outside the tent.
He opened his eyes when he heard footsteps.
Lin Qinghe instinctively took a step to block.
The military officer immediately drew his sword.
Lu Shuangyi looked over coldly.
The tent fell silent.
Yan Heng raised his hand, and the military officer took a half step back.
He walked to the bedside, looked at the cloth wrapped around Chen Mu's chest, and then at the torn medicine box next to him.
The medicine box's inner compartment was half empty.
Yan Heng asked, "Can you still speak?"
Chen Mu nodded.
"able."
His voice was hoarse.
Han Wenshan stood at the tent entrance and slowly said, "Chen Mu, the military judge of Bailang Pass is here. You have committed five crimes: setting up a military proclamation without authorization, privately distributing spoils, bribing the cooks, coercing a barbarian woman to testify, seizing military equipment, and resisting escort. You will be tried for all five crimes."
Hearing this from outside the tent, Shi Tou's eyes immediately turned red.
Old Chai tried to stand up, but Ma Liu held him down.
Chen Mu did not look at Han Wenshan.
He only asked Yan Heng, "Which case should we examine first?"
Yan Heng pulled over a low stool and sat down.
"First, examine the fate."
Han Wenshan frowned.
Yan Heng said, "Someone has accused you of illegally establishing military power and inciting the cooks. If this is true, you could be executed according to the law."
Lin Qinghe's fingers trembled, and the medicine cloth almost fell into the basin of water.
Su Wan stood at the corner of the tent, holding the re-wrapped copy of the register in her arms, her face pale.
Anato was tied to a tent post, an iron mask pressed against half of her face. When she heard the words "can be killed," her lips twitched, but she didn't laugh.
Chen Mu simply asked, "Who filed the complaint?"
Yan Heng looked at Han Wenshan.
Han Wenshan said, "The confessions of Han Zhao from the Black Tiger Camp, Han's personal guards from White Wolf Pass, and Lao Chai from the Fire Head Camp."
There was a commotion outside the tent.
Old Chai suddenly looked up.
"I didn't!"
The two military officers immediately looked at him.
Han Wenshan said calmly, "Whether you admit to being beaten before or after the beating is another matter."
That statement went unheard.
But it felt like the back of a knife striking someone's heart.
Old Chai's face flushed red.
The cloth on his back was still stained with blood, and his lips trembled twice, but he couldn't bring himself to curse.
Chen Mu looked at him.
This is where Han Wenshan's ruthlessness lies.
Do not kill.
First, smudge people's mouths.
Yan Heng asked Lao Chai, "Did you say that Chen Mu forced you to memorize the three lists?"
Old Chai, supporting himself on the stretcher, tried to stand up.
Ma Liu said anxiously in a low voice, "Uncle Chai, don't move, his back is still ulcerated."
Old Chai slapped his hand away.
"Even if I'm lying down, it's still cleaner than some people who are standing."
The cooks outside the tent were trying to suppress their laughter, but dared not.
Han Wenshan's expression turned a little cold.
Old Chai looked up and spoke slowly and deliberately.
"The three lists are something we have to bear ourselves."
Yan Heng looked at him.
Why?
Old Chai gritted his teeth.
"The paper can be torn, but our mouths are still there."
Suddenly, Crippled Three chimed in from outside: "I remember the first line, 'The South Gate was defended, and Chen Mu led seventeen cooks to guard the South Gate at night.'"
Stone also shouted, "I remember the injury from the north wall; Stone was shot but did not retreat. This injury record needs verification!"
Ma Liu shouted, "I remember the corpse-dragging skill! Old Chai, Ma Liu, drag back one White Fox Guard and seize their iron claws!"
The military officer turned back.
The dozen or so cooks outside the tent did not draw their swords.
They just stood there.
One by one, they submitted their expense reports.
The sound was rough, chaotic, and uneven.
But it was like a mallet, striking the outside of the medical tent again and again.
Han Wenshan finally said coldly, "Lord Yan, you see. This is not the morale of the army, this is a private army."
Yan Heng did not answer immediately.
He looked at Chen Mu.
"What did you say?"
Chen Mu leaned against the edge of the bed, his fingertips pressed against the corner of the quilt, his knuckles slightly white.
He was so badly injured that he had difficulty speaking.
But every word is clear.
"They are not my soldiers."
Han Wenshan smiled.
Chen Mu continued, "They are soldiers from Blackstone Fortress."
"The debts they're carrying aren't mine."
"It's their own life debt."
The area outside the tent suddenly became quiet.
Yan Heng's eyes flickered slightly.
Han Wenshan didn't want him to continue, so he immediately said, "Clever words and a flattering demeanor."
Chen Mu looked at him.
"Deputy General Han said that I had illegally established military power."
"Then let me ask you a question."
"Old Chai was beaten twelve times on the back. What military law allows you to do that?"
The sound of the wind inside the tent suddenly became clear.
Han Wenshan's expression darkened slightly.
Chen Mu said, "You said my private notice doesn't count as military orders."
"So, if you beat a soldier without authorization, doesn't that violate military law?"
Yan Heng slowly raised his eyes and looked at the bandage on Lao Chai's back.
Old Chai lay on the stretcher, gritting his teeth to keep himself from trembling.
Han Wenshan said, "Interrogation and confession are standard military procedures."
Chen Mu asked, "Whose testimony are we taking?"
"Old Chai is a witness, not a criminal."
"If the witness is beaten, does that testimony still count?"
Yan Heng remained silent.
The military officers at the tent entrance exchanged glances.
That's corny.
Also straight.
Everyone can understand it.
Han Wenshan stared at Chen Mu, then suddenly smiled.
"You've got the nerve to bite back."
Chen Mu closed his eyes and took a breath.
Lin Qinghe tried to help him up, but he gently pushed her away.
He looked at Yan Heng.
"If Lord Yan wants to interrogate me, then so be it."
"First, remember Old Chai's twelve blows."
"Who fired the shot? Who gave the order? Why did they fire?"
Write it clearly.
Yan Heng finally spoke.
"remember."
The accompanying scribe immediately laid out paper.
Han Wenshan's smile faded.
Chen Mu knew he had not won.
He only slightly deflected Han Wenshan's first strike.
But this is enough to give the cooks a breather.
Yan Heng stood up.
"No arrests tonight."
Han asked Shan, "Lord Yan?"
Yan Heng said, "Chen Mu is too badly injured to be taken away."
He looked at the military law officer.
"Two military officers were added to the medical tent."
"Chen Mu is not allowed to leave the tent."
"The cooks must not approach the tent within five steps."
The expressions of the cooks changed.
Lin Qinghe also froze.
Chen Mu looked at the military officers at the tent entrance without saying a word.
This is the loss he suffered.
He wasn't taken down.
But they were locked up.
Han Wenshan turned around outside the tent and glanced at Chen Mu before leaving.
"Chen Mu, you're very good at keeping accounts."
"Tomorrow, I'll show Lord Yan just how many heads you'll have to chop off for this debt."
The curtains fell.
The cold wind blew in, only to be suppressed.
Chen Mu leaned back on the couch, his face completely pale.
Lin Qinghe said in a low voice, "You can't keep pushing yourself."
Chen Mu looked outside the tent.
Old Chai was carried away, and the cooks were stopped five steps away by military officers.
The lame man stood in the snow, his mouth still moving.
He's still on the list.
Chen Mu closed his eyes.
"Let him carry it."
"I'm not the one being interrogated tomorrow."
"It's a question of whether they want the lives of lowly soldiers to remain worthless."
Outside the tent, the lame man's voice grew increasingly hoarse.
Ma Liu squatted under the eaves, wanting to hand him water, but was stopped by the military guards. The lame man didn't take the water, only wiping his mouth with his sleeve.
He memorized slowly, pausing after each line.
When they reached the north wall where the injury was being treated, Stone suddenly recited a sentence.
When they reached the part about dragging the corpse, Old Chai added a hoarse sentence on the stretcher.
The voices of the group were incoherent, like the rattling of a broken pot. But Chen Mu, inside the medical tent, listened and closed his eyes.
The paper will be stolen.
The person is still alive.
As long as people are willing to remember, this debt will never be settled.
But he also knew that Han Wenshan would not make any moves on the list tomorrow.
He would target people.
But those rows of accounts never stopped.
